oṁ bhadraṁ karṇebhiḥ śr̥ṇuyāma devāḥ. bhadraṁ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ. sthirairaṅgaistuṣṭuvāṁsastanūbhiḥ. vyaśema devahitaṁ yadāyuḥ.
O gods, may we hear with our ears what is good; may we see with our eyes what is good. With steady limbs and bodies, singing your praise, may we live out the span the gods have given.
svasti na indro vr̥ddhaśravāḥ. svasti naḥ pūṣā viśvavedāḥ. svasti nastārkṣyo ariṣṭanemiḥ. svasti no br̥haspatirdadhātu. oṁ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ.
May Indra of great fame grant us well-being; may all-knowing Pushan, Tarkshya of the unharmed wheel, and Brihaspati grant us well-being. Om, peace, peace, peace.
oṁ namaste gaṇapataye. tvameva pratyakṣaṁ tattvamasi. tvameva kevalaṁ kartāsi. tvameva kevalaṁ dhartāsi. tvameva kevalaṁ hartāsi. tvameva sarvaṁ khalvidaṁ brahmāsi. tvaṁ sākṣādātmāsi nityam.
Om, salutations to you, Ganapati. You alone are the truth made visible. You alone create, you alone sustain, you alone dissolve. You alone are all this — Brahman itself. You are the Self, present and eternal.
r̥taṁ vacmi. satyaṁ vacmi.
I speak what is right; I speak what is true.
ava tvaṁ mām. ava vaktāram. ava śrotāram. ava dātāram. ava dhātāram. ava anūcānam. ava śiṣyam. ava paścāttāt. ava purastāt. avottarāttāt. ava dakṣiṇāttāt. ava cordhvāttāt. avādhastāt. sarvato māṁ pāhi pāhi samantāt.
Protect me. Protect the one who speaks and the one who hears, the one who gives and the one who keeps, the teacher and the student. Protect me from the west and the east, the north and the south, from above and below. Protect me on every side, all around.
tvaṁ vāṅmayastvaṁ cinmayaḥ. tvamānandamayastvaṁ brahmamayaḥ. tvaṁ saccidānandādvitīyo'si. tvaṁ pratyakṣaṁ brahmāsi. tvaṁ jñānamayo vijñānamayo'si.
You are speech and consciousness, bliss and Brahman; you are being, consciousness and bliss, without a second. You are Brahman made visible; you are knowledge and wisdom itself.
sarvaṁ jagadidaṁ tvatto jāyate. sarvaṁ jagadidaṁ tvattastiṣṭhati. sarvaṁ jagadidaṁ tvayi layameṣyati. sarvaṁ jagadidaṁ tvayi pratyeti. tvaṁ bhūmirāpo'nalo'nilo nabhaḥ. tvaṁ catvāri vākpadāni.
This whole world is born from you, stands by you, will dissolve into you and returns to you. You are earth, water, fire, air and sky. You are the four levels of speech.
tvaṁ guṇatrayātītaḥ. tvamavasthātrayātītaḥ. tvaṁ dehatrayātītaḥ. tvaṁ kālatrayātītaḥ. tvaṁ mūlādhārasthito'si nityam. tvaṁ śaktitrayātmakaḥ. tvāṁ yogino dhyāyanti nityam.
You are beyond the three gunas, the three states, the three bodies and the three times. You dwell always at the muladhara. You are the three powers in one. Yogis hold you in their minds, always.
tvaṁ brahmā tvaṁ viṣṇustvaṁ rudrastvamindrastvamagnistvaṁ vāyustvaṁ sūryastvaṁ candramāstvaṁ brahma bhūrbhuvaḥ svarom.
You are Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra; you are Indra, Agni and Vayu; you are the Sun and the Moon; you are Brahman — bhuh, bhuvah, svah and Om.
gaṇādiṁ pūrvamuccārya varṇādiṁ tadanantaram. anusvāraḥ parataraḥ. ardhendulasitam. tāreṇa r̥ddham. etattava manusvarūpam.
First say 'ga', the first sound of 'gana', then 'a', the first of the letters, then the anusvara, crowned by the crescent and joined with Om — this is the form of your mantra.
gakāraḥ pūrvarūpam. akāro madhyamarūpam. anusvāraścāntyarūpam. binduruttararūpam. nādaḥ sandhānam. saṁhitā sandhiḥ. saiṣā gaṇeśavidyā.
'Ga' is its first part, 'a' its middle, the anusvara its end and the bindu what follows; the nada joins them, and their union makes it whole. This is the knowledge of Ganesha.
gaṇaka r̥ṣiḥ. nicr̥dgāyatrī chandaḥ. gaṇapatirdevatā. oṁ gaṁ gaṇapataye namaḥ.
Its seer is Ganaka, its metre nichrid gayatri, its deity Ganapati. Om gam, salutations to Ganapati.
ekadantāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi. tanno dantī pracodayāt.
We know the one-tusked; we hold in mind the one of the curved trunk. May that tusked one inspire us.
ekadantaṁ caturhastaṁ pāśamaṅkuśadhāriṇam. radaṁ ca varadaṁ hastairbibhrāṇaṁ mūṣakadhvajam.
One-tusked and four-handed, bearing the noose and the goad, holding his tusk and granting boons, the mouse upon his banner;
raktaṁ lambodaraṁ śūrpakarṇakaṁ raktavāsasam. raktagandhānuliptāṅgaṁ raktapuṣpaiḥ supūjitam.
red, great-bellied, with ears like winnowing fans, dressed in red, anointed with red sandal and honoured with red flowers;
bhaktānukampinaṁ devaṁ jagatkāraṇamacyutam. āvirbhūtaṁ ca sr̥ṣṭyādau prakr̥teḥ puruṣātparam. evaṁ dhyāyati yo nityaṁ sa yogī yogināṁ varaḥ.
the god who is tender to his devotees, the imperishable cause of the world, who appeared at the dawn of creation, beyond Prakriti and Purusha — whoever holds him in mind thus each day is a yogi, first among yogis.
namo vrātapataye namo gaṇapataye namaḥ pramathapataye namaste'stu lambodarāyaikadantāya vighnanāśine śivasutāya śrīvaradamūrtaye namaḥ.
Salutations to the lord of the multitudes, to Ganapati, to the lord of Shiva's hosts; salutations to you, great-bellied and one-tusked, destroyer of obstacles, son of Shiva, the boon-giving form.
etadatharvaśīrṣaṁ yo'dhīte. sa brahmabhūyāya kalpate. sa sarvavighnairna bādhyate. sa sarvataḥ sukhamedhate. sa pañcamahāpāpātpramucyate.
Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit to realise Brahman, is held back by no obstacle, thrives in happiness everywhere and is freed from the five great sins.
sāyamadhīyāno divasakr̥taṁ pāpaṁ nāśayati. prātaradhīyāno rātrikr̥taṁ pāpaṁ nāśayati. sāyaṁ prātaḥ prayuñjāno apāpo bhavati. sarvatrādhīyāno'pavighno bhavati. dharmārthakāmamokṣaṁ ca vindati.
Read in the evening, it undoes the wrongs of the day; in the morning, those of the night; morning and evening, one is free of wrong; everywhere, free of obstacles — and one gains dharma, prosperity, fulfilment and liberation.
idamatharvaśīrṣamaśiṣyāya na deyam. yo yadi mohāddāsyati sa pāpīyān bhavati. sahasrāvartanādyaṁ yaṁ kāmamadhīte taṁ tamanena sādhayet.
This Atharvashirsha is not to be given to one who is not a disciple; whoever gives it out of delusion does wrong. By a thousand recitations, whatever wish one reads it for is accomplished.
Whoever bathes Ganapati while reciting it becomes eloquent; whoever recites it on Chaturthi without eating becomes learned. So says Atharvan. Whoever knows him as the one who enfolds even Brahma is never afraid.
yo dūrvāṅkurairyajati sa vaiśravaṇopamo bhavati. yo lājairyajati sa yaśovān bhavati. sa medhāvān bhavati. yo modakasahasreṇa yajati sa vāñchitaphalamavāpnoti. yaḥ sājyasamidbhiryajati sa sarvaṁ labhate sa sarvaṁ labhate.
Whoever offers durva becomes like Kubera; whoever offers puffed rice gains renown and wisdom; whoever offers a thousand modak gains the fruit desired; whoever offers samidh with ghee gains everything.
aṣṭau brāhmaṇān samyaggrāhayitvā sūryavarcasvī bhavati. sūryagrahe mahānadyāṁ pratimāsaṁnidhau vā japtvā siddhamantro bhavati. mahāvighnāt pramucyate. mahāpāpāt pramucyate. mahādoṣāt pramucyate. sa sarvavid bhavati sa sarvavid bhavati. ya evaṁ veda. ityupaniṣat.
Whoever teaches it rightly to eight brahmins shines like the sun. Reciting it at a solar eclipse, by a great river or before a murti, one masters the mantra and is freed from great obstacles, great sins and great faults, and comes to know all — whoever knows this. So ends the Upanishad.
oṁ bhadraṁ karṇebhiḥ śr̥ṇuyāma devāḥ. bhadraṁ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ. sthirairaṅgaistuṣṭuvāṁsastanūbhiḥ. vyaśema devahitaṁ yadāyuḥ. svasti na indro vr̥ddhaśravāḥ. svasti naḥ pūṣā viśvavedāḥ. svasti nastārkṣyo ariṣṭanemiḥ. svasti no br̥haspatirdadhātu. oṁ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ.
May we hear and see what is good, and may the gods grant us well-being. Om, peace, peace, peace.
