Durga Chalisa

नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी।
नमो नमो दुर्गे दुःख हरनी॥

namo namo durge sukh karṇī. namo namo durge duḥkha harṇī.

I bow to You again and again, O Durga Maa, giver of joy; I bow to You again and again, O Durga Maa, remover of sorrow.

निरंकार है ज्योति तुम्हारी।
तिहूँ लोक फैली उजियारी॥

niraṅkār hai jyoti tumhārī. tihūṁ lok phailī ujiyārī.

Your light is formless, and its radiance fills the three worlds.

शशि ललाट मुख महाविशाला।
नेत्र लाल भृकुटि विकराला॥

śaśi lalāṭ mukh mahā-viśālā. netra lāl bhṛkuṭi vikarālā.

The Moon adorns Your brow and Your face is vast; Your eyes are red and Your frown is fearsome.

रूप मातु को अधिक सुहावे।
दरश करत जन अति सुख पावे॥

rūp mātu ko adhik suhāve. darś karat jan ati sukh pāve.

O Maa, Your form is beautiful beyond words; whoever takes Your darshan finds great joy.

तुम संसार शक्ति लै कीना।
पालन हेतु अन्न धन दीना॥

tum sansār śakti lai kīnā. pālan hetu anna dhan dīnā.

By Your Shakti You made the world, and You gave it food and wealth to sustain it.

अन्नपूर्णा हुई जग पाला।
तुम ही आदि सुन्दरी बाला॥

annapūrṇā huī jag pālā. tum hī ādi sundarī bālā.

As Annapurna You nourish the world; You are the first and eternal Bala Sundari.

प्रलयकाल सब नाशन हारी।
तुम गौरी शिवशंकर प्यारी॥

pralaykāl sab nāśan hārī. tum Gaurī Śivaśaṅkar pyārī.

At the time of pralaya it is You who bring all things to an end; You are Gauri, beloved of Shiv Shankar.

शिव योगी तुम्हरे गुण गावें।
ब्रह्मा विष्णु तुम्हें नित ध्यावें॥

Śiva yogī tumhare guṇ gāve. brahmā viṣṇu tumheṁ nit dhyāve.

Shiv ji and the yogis sing Your praise; Brahma ji and Vishnu ji hold You in dhyana always.

रूप सरस्वती को तुम धारा।
दे सुबुद्धि ऋषि मुनिन उबारा॥

rūp sarasvatī ko tum dhārā. de subuddhi ṛṣi munin ubārā.

You took the form of Saraswati Maa, and gave good understanding to the rishis and sages, and raised them up.

धरयो रूप नरसिंह को अम्बा।
परगट भई फाड़कर खम्बा॥

dharyo rūp narasiṁh ko ambā. pargaṭ bhayī phāṛkar khambā.

O Amba, it was You who took the form of Narasimha and came forth, splitting the pillar.

रक्षा करि प्रह्लाद बचायो।
हिरण्याक्ष को स्वर्ग पठायो॥

rakṣā kari prahlād bacāyo. hiraṇyākṣ ko svarg paṭhāyo.

So You protected Prahlad and saved him, and sent Hiranyaksha to heaven.

लक्ष्मी रूप धरो जग माहीं।
श्री नारायण अंग समाहीं॥

lakṣmī rūp dharo jag māhīṁ. śrī nārāyaṇ aṅg samāhīṁ.

In the world You took the form of Lakshmi Maa and dwell at the side of Shri Narayan.

क्षीरसिन्धु में करत विलासा।
दयासिन्धु दीजै मन आसा॥

kṣīrasindhu meṁ karat vilāsā. dayāsindhu dījai man āsā.

You delight in the Ocean of Milk; O Ocean of Mercy, fulfil the hopes of my heart.

हिंगलाज में तुम्हीं भवानी।
महिमा अमित न जात बखानी॥

hiṅglāj meṁ tumhīṁ bhavānī. mahimā amit na jāt bakhānī.

O Bhavani, at Hinglaj it is You alone; Your boundless glory cannot be told.

मातंगी अरु धूमावति माता।
भुवनेश्वरी बगला सुख दाता॥

mātaṅgī aru dhūmāvatī mātā. bhuvaneśvarī baglā sukh dātā.

You are Matangi and Dhumavati Mata; You are Bhuvaneshwari and Bagala, the givers of joy.

श्री भैरव तारा जग तारिणी।
छिन्न भाल भव दुःख निवारिणी॥

śrī bhairav tārā jag tāriṇī. chinna bhāl bhav duḥkh nivāriṇī.

You are Shri Bhairavi and Tara, who carry the world across; as Chhinnamasta You take away the sorrows of this world.

केहरि वाहन सोह भवानी।
लांगुर वीर चलत अगवानी॥

keharī vāhan soha bhavānī. lāṅgur vīr calat agavānī.

O Bhavani, You are resplendent on Your lion, and the valiant Langur goes before You.

कर में खप्पर खड्ग विराजै।
जाको देख काल डर भाजै॥

kar meṁ khappar khaḍg virājai. jāko dekh kāl ḍar bhājai.

The khappar and the sword shine in Your hands; seeing them, even Kaal flees in fear.

सोहै अस्त्र और त्रिशूला।
जाते उठत शत्रु हिय शूला॥

sohai astr aur triśūlā. jāte uṭhat śatru hiy śūlā.

Weapons and the trishul shine in Your hands; at the sight of them, pain rises in the enemy's heart.

नगरकोट में तुम्हीं विराजत।
तिहुँलोक में डंका बाजत॥

nagarkot meṁ tumhīṁ virājat. tihuṁlok meṁ ḍaṅkā bājat.

You Yourself are enthroned at Nagarkot, and Your drum resounds through the three worlds.

शुम्भ निशुम्भ दानव तुम मारे।
रक्तबीज शंखन संहारे॥

śumbha niśumbha dānava tuma māre. raktabīja śaṁkhana saṁhāre.

You slew the asuras Shumbh and Nishumbh; You destroyed Raktabeej and Shankhasur.

महिषासुर नृप अति अभिमानी।
जेहि अघ भार मही अकुलानी॥

mahiṣāsura nṛpa ati abhimānī । jēhi agha bhāra mahī akulānī ॥

The asura king Mahishasura was exceedingly arrogant; the earth was in anguish under the weight of his sins.

रूप कराल कालिका धारा।
सेन सहित तुम तिहि संहारा॥

rūpa karāla kālikā dhārā । sēna sahita tuma tihi saṃhārā ॥

You took the dreadful form of Kalika and slew him with all his army.

पडी भीढ संतन पर जब जब।
भयि सहाय मातु तुम तब तब॥

paḍī bhīḍha santana para jaba jaba । bhayi sahāya mātu tuma taba taba ॥

Whenever trouble fell upon the saints, O Maa, You came to their help.

अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका।
तब महिमा सब कहें अशोका॥

amarapurī aru bāsava lōkā । taba mahimā saba kahēṃ aśōkā ॥

In Amarpuri and in Indra's world, all tell of Your glory and are free of sorrow.

ज्वाला में है ज्योति तुम्हारी।
तुम्हें सदा पूजें नर नारी॥

jvālā mēṃ hai jyōti tumhārī । tumhēṃ sadā pūjēṃ nara nārī ॥

Your light shines in the flame at Jwala ji; men and women offer puja to You always.

प्रेम भक्ति से जो यश गावें।
दुःख दारिद्र निकट नहिं आवें॥

prēma bhakti sē jō yaśa gāvēm । duḥkha dāridra nikaṭa nahiṃ āvēm ॥

Sorrow and poverty never come near those who sing Your glory with love and bhakti.

ध्यावे तुम्हें जो नर मन लायि।
जन्म मरण ते सौं छुट जायि॥

dhyāvē tumhēṃ jō nara mana lāyi । janma maraṇa tē sauṃ Chuṭa jāyi ॥

Whoever holds You in dhyana with the whole mind is freed from birth and death.

जोगी सुर मुनि कहत पुकारी।
योग न होयि बिन शक्ति तुम्हारी॥

jōgī sura muni kahata pukārī । yōga na hōyi bina śakti tumhārī ॥

Yogis, devas and sages proclaim that there is no yoga without Your Shakti.

शंकर आचारज तप कीनो।
काम अरु क्रोध जीत सब लीनो॥

śaṅkara āchāraja tapa kīnō । kāma aru krōdha jīta saba līnō ॥

Shankaracharya performed tapas and conquered desire and anger entirely.

निशिदिन ध्यान धरो शंकर को।
काहु काल नहिं सुमिरो तुमको॥

niśidina dhyāna dharō śaṅkara kō । kāhu kāla nahiṃ sumirō tumakō ॥

He held Shankar in dhyana day and night, but never once remembered You.

शक्ति रूप को मरम न पायो।
शक्ति गयी तब मन पछतायो॥

śakti rūpa kō marama na pāyō । śakti gayī taba mana pachatāyō ॥

He did not grasp the secret of Your form as Shakti; when his strength left him, he repented in his heart.

शरणागत हुयि कीर्ति बखानी।
जय जय जय जगदंब भवानी॥

śaraṇāgata huyi kīrti bakhānī । jaya jaya jaya jagadamba bhavānī ॥

Taking refuge in You, he sang Your glory: "Glory, glory, glory to Jagdamba Bhavani."

भयि प्रसन्न आदि जगदंबा।
दयि शक्ति नहिं कीन विलंबा॥

bhayi prasanna ādi jagadambā । dayi śakti nahiṃ kīna vilambā ॥

Adi Jagdamba was pleased and restored his strength without delay.

मोको मातु कष्ट अति घेरो।
तुम बिन कौन हरै दुःख मेरो॥

mōkō mātu kaṣṭa ati ghērō । tuma bina kauna harai duḥkha mērō ॥

O Maa, great troubles surround me; who but You can take away my sorrow?

आशा तृष्णा निपट सतावें।
रिपु मूरख मोहि अति दर पावैं॥

āśā tṛṣṇā nipaṭa satāvēm । ripu mūrakha mohi ati dara pāvaim ॥

Hope and craving torment me without end, and foolish enemies fill me with fear.

शत्रु नाश कीजै महारानी।
सुमिरौं इकचित तुम्हें भवानी॥

śatru nāśa kījai mahārānī । sumirauṃ ikachita tumhēṃ bhavānī ॥

O Maharani, destroy my enemies; O Bhavani, I remember You alone, with a single mind.

करो कृपा हे मातु दयाला।
ऋद्धि-सिद्धि दे करहु निहाला।

karō kṛpā hē mātu dayālā । ṛddhi-siddhi dē karahu nihālā ।

O compassionate Maa, have mercy on me; grant me riddhi and siddhi and fill my life with blessing.

जब लगि जियू दया फल पावू।
तुम्हरो यश मैं सदा सुनावू॥

jaba lagi jiyū dayā phala pāvū । tumharō yaśa maiṃ sadā sunāvū ॥

As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of Your mercy, and may I ever tell of Your glory.

दुर्गा चालीसा जो गावै।
सब सुख भोग परमपद पावै॥

durgā chālīsā jō gāvai । saba sukha bhōga paramapada pāvai ॥

Whoever sings this Durga Chalisa enjoys every happiness and attains the highest state.

देवीदास शरण निज जानी।
करहु कृपा जगदंब भवानी॥

dēvīdāsa śaraṇa nija jānī । karahu kṛpā jagadamba bhavānī ॥

Knowing that Devidas has taken refuge in You, have mercy on him, O Jagdamba Bhavani.

शरणागत रक्षा करे, भक्त रहे निःशंक।

You protect the one who comes to You for refuge, and Your bhakt lives free of fear.

मैं आया तेरी शरण में, मातु लीजिये अंक॥

I have come to You for refuge, Maa — take me in Your lap.
