namo namo durge sukha karanī. namo namo durge duḥkha haranī.
I bow to You again and again, O Durga Maa, giver of joy; I bow to You again and again, O Durga Maa, remover of sorrow.
niraṁkāra hai jyoti tumhārī. tihūm̐ loka phailī ujiyārī.
Your light is formless, and its radiance fills the three worlds.
śaśi lalāṭa mukha mahāviśālā. netra lāla bhr̥kuṭi vikarālā.
The Moon adorns Your brow and Your face is vast; Your eyes are red and Your frown is fearsome.
rūpa mātu ko adhika suhāve. daraśa karata jana ati sukha pāve.
O Maa, Your form is beautiful beyond words; whoever takes Your darshan finds great joy.
tuma saṁsāra śakti lai kīnā. pālana hetu anna dhana dīnā.
By Your Shakti You made the world, and You gave it food and wealth to sustain it.
annapūrṇā huī jaga pālā. tuma hī ādi sundarī bālā.
As Annapurna You nourish the world; You are the first and eternal Bala Sundari.
pralayakāla saba nāśana hārī. tuma gaurī śivaśaṁkara pyārī.
At the time of pralaya it is You who bring all things to an end; You are Gauri, beloved of Shiv Shankar.
śiva yogī tumhare guṇa gāveṁ. brahmā viṣṇu tumheṁ nita dhyāveṁ.
Shiv ji and the yogis sing Your praise; Brahma ji and Vishnu ji hold You in dhyana always.
rūpa sarasvatī ko tuma dhārā. de subuddhi r̥ṣi munina ubārā.
You took the form of Saraswati Maa, and gave good understanding to the rishis and sages, and raised them up.
dharayo rūpa narasiṁha ko ambā. paragaṭa bhaī phāḍakara khambā.
O Amba, it was You who took the form of Narasimha and came forth, splitting the pillar.
rakṣā kari prahlāda bacāyo. hiraṇyākṣa ko svarga paṭhāyo.
So You protected Prahlad and saved him, and sent Hiranyaksha to heaven.
lakṣmī rūpa dharo jaga māhīṁ. śrī nārāyaṇa aṁga samāhīṁ.
In the world You took the form of Lakshmi Maa and dwell at the side of Shri Narayan.
kṣīrasindhu meṁ karata vilāsā. dayāsindhu dījai mana āsā.
You delight in the Ocean of Milk; O Ocean of Mercy, fulfil the hopes of my heart.
hiṁgalāja meṁ tumhīṁ bhavānī. mahimā amita na jāta bakhānī.
O Bhavani, at Hinglaj it is You alone; Your boundless glory cannot be told.
mātaṁgī aru dhūmāvati mātā. bhuvaneśvarī bagalā sukha dātā.
You are Matangi and Dhumavati Mata; You are Bhuvaneshwari and Bagala, the givers of joy.
śrī bhairava tārā jaga tāriṇī. chinna bhāla bhava duḥkha nivāriṇī.
You are Shri Bhairavi and Tara, who carry the world across; as Chhinnamasta You take away the sorrows of this world.
kehari vāhana soha bhavānī. lāṁgura vīra calata agavānī.
O Bhavani, You are resplendent on Your lion, and the valiant Langur goes before You.
kara meṁ khappara khaḍga virājai. jāko dekha kāla ḍara bhājai.
The khappar and the sword shine in Your hands; seeing them, even Kaal flees in fear.
sohai astra aura triśūlā. jāte uṭhata śatru hiya śūlā.
Weapons and the trishul shine in Your hands; at the sight of them, pain rises in the enemy's heart.
nagarakoṭa meṁ tumhīṁ virājata. tihum̐loka meṁ ḍaṁkā bājata.
You Yourself are enthroned at Nagarkot, and Your drum resounds through the three worlds.
śumbha niśumbha dānava tuma māre. raktabīja śaṁkhana saṁhāre.
You slew the asuras Shumbh and Nishumbh; You destroyed Raktabeej and Shankhasur.
mahiṣāsura nr̥pa ati abhimānī. jehi agha bhāra mahī akulānī.
The asura king Mahishasura was exceedingly arrogant; the earth was in anguish under the weight of his sins.
rūpa karāla kālikā dhārā. sena sahita tuma tihi saṁhārā.
You took the dreadful form of Kalika and slew him with all his army.
paḍī bhīḍha saṁtana para jaba jaba. bhayi sahāya mātu tuma taba taba.
Whenever trouble fell upon the saints, O Maa, You came to their help.
amarapurī aru bāsava lokā. taba mahimā saba kaheṁ aśokā.
In Amarpuri and in Indra's world, all tell of Your glory and are free of sorrow.
jvālā meṁ hai jyoti tumhārī. tumheṁ sadā pūjeṁ nara nārī.
Your light shines in the flame at Jwala ji; men and women offer puja to You always.
prema bhakti se jo yaśa gāveṁ. duḥkha dāridra nikaṭa nahiṁ āveṁ.
Sorrow and poverty never come near those who sing Your glory with love and bhakti.
dhyāve tumheṁ jo nara mana lāyi. janma maraṇa te sauṁ chuṭa jāyi.
Whoever holds You in dhyana with the whole mind is freed from birth and death.
jogī sura muni kahata pukārī. yoga na hoyi bina śakti tumhārī.
Yogis, devas and sages proclaim that there is no yoga without Your Shakti.
śaṁkara ācāraja tapa kīno. kāma aru krodha jīta saba līno.
Shankaracharya performed tapas and conquered desire and anger entirely.
niśidina dhyāna dharo śaṁkara ko. kāhu kāla nahiṁ sumiro tumako.
He held Shankar in dhyana day and night, but never once remembered You.
śakti rūpa ko marama na pāyo. śakti gayī taba mana pachatāyo.
He did not grasp the secret of Your form as Shakti; when his strength left him, he repented in his heart.
śaraṇāgata huyi kīrti bakhānī. jaya jaya jaya jagadaṁba bhavānī.
Taking refuge in You, he sang Your glory: "Glory, glory, glory to Jagdamba Bhavani."
bhayi prasanna ādi jagadaṁbā. dayi śakti nahiṁ kīna vilaṁbā.
Adi Jagdamba was pleased and restored his strength without delay.
moko mātu kaṣṭa ati ghero. tuma bina kauna harai duḥkha mero.
O Maa, great troubles surround me; who but You can take away my sorrow?
āśā tr̥ṣṇā nipaṭa satāveṁ. ripu mūrakha mohi ati dara pāvaiṁ.
Hope and craving torment me without end, and foolish enemies fill me with fear.
śatru nāśa kījai mahārānī. sumirauṁ ikacita tumheṁ bhavānī.
O Maharani, destroy my enemies; O Bhavani, I remember You alone, with a single mind.
karo kr̥pā he mātu dayālā. r̥ddhi-siddhi de karahu nihālā.
O compassionate Maa, have mercy on me; grant me riddhi and siddhi and fill my life with blessing.
jaba lagi jiyū dayā phala pāvū. tumharo yaśa maiṁ sadā sunāvū.
As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of Your mercy, and may I ever tell of Your glory.
durgā cālīsā jo gāvai. saba sukha bhoga paramapada pāvai.
Whoever sings this Durga Chalisa enjoys every happiness and attains the highest state.
devīdāsa śaraṇa nija jānī. karahu kr̥pā jagadaṁba bhavānī.
Knowing that Devidas has taken refuge in You, have mercy on him, O Jagdamba Bhavani.
Closing doha
śaraṇāgata rakṣā kare, bhakta rahe niḥśaṁka.
You protect the one who comes to You for refuge, and Your bhakt lives free of fear.
maiṁ āyā terī śaraṇa meṁ, mātu lījiye aṁka.
I have come to You for refuge, Maa — take me in Your lap.
