namo namo durge sukh karanee. namo namo durge duhkh haranee.

I bow to You again and again, O Durga Maa, giver of joy; I bow to You again and again, O Durga Maa, remover of sorrow.

nirankaar hai jyoti tumhaaree. tihoon lok phailee ujiyaaree.

Your light is formless, and its radiance fills the three worlds.

shashi lalaat mukh mahaavishaalaa. netr laal bhrikuti vikaraalaa.

The Moon adorns Your brow and Your face is vast; Your eyes are red and Your frown is fearsome.

roop maatu ko adhik suhaave. darash karat jan ati sukh paave.

O Maa, Your form is beautiful beyond words; whoever takes Your darshan finds great joy.

tum sansaar shakti lai keenaa. paalan hetu ann dhan deenaa.

By Your Shakti You made the world, and You gave it food and wealth to sustain it.

annapoornaa huee jag paalaa. tum hee aadi sundaree baalaa.

As Annapurna You nourish the world; You are the first and eternal Bala Sundari.

pralayakaal sab naashan haaree. tum gauree shivashankar pyaaree.

At the time of pralaya it is You who bring all things to an end; You are Gauri, beloved of Shiv Shankar.

shiv yogee tumhare gun gaaven. brahmaa vishnu tumhen nit dhyaaven.

Shiv ji and the yogis sing Your praise; Brahma ji and Vishnu ji hold You in dhyana always.

roop sarasvatee ko tum dhaaraa. de subuddhi rishi munin ubaaraa.

You took the form of Saraswati Maa, and gave good understanding to the rishis and sages, and raised them up.

dharayo roop narasinh ko ambaa. paragat bhaee phaadakar khambaa.

O Amba, it was You who took the form of Narasimha and came forth, splitting the pillar.

rakshaa kari prahlaad bachaayo. hiranyaaksh ko svarg pathaayo.

So You protected Prahlad and saved him, and sent Hiranyaksha to heaven.

lakshmee roop dharo jag maaheen. shree naaraayan ang samaaheen.

In the world You took the form of Lakshmi Maa and dwell at the side of Shri Narayan.

ksheerasindhu men karat vilaasaa. dayaasindhu deejai man aasaa.

You delight in the Ocean of Milk; O Ocean of Mercy, fulfil the hopes of my heart.

hingalaaj men tumheen bhavaanee. mahimaa amit n jaat bakhaanee.

O Bhavani, at Hinglaj it is You alone; Your boundless glory cannot be told.

maatangee aru dhoomaavati maataa. bhuvaneshvaree bagalaa sukh daataa.

You are Matangi and Dhumavati Mata; You are Bhuvaneshwari and Bagala, the givers of joy.

shree bhairav taaraa jag taarinee. chhinn bhaal bhav duhkh nivaarinee.

You are Shri Bhairavi and Tara, who carry the world across; as Chhinnamasta You take away the sorrows of this world.

kehari vaahan soh bhavaanee. laangur veer chalat agavaanee.

O Bhavani, You are resplendent on Your lion, and the valiant Langur goes before You.

18

kar men khappar khadg viraajai. jaako dekh kaal dar bhaajai.

The khappar and the sword shine in Your hands; seeing them, even Kaal flees in fear.

sohai astr aur trishoolaa. jaate uthat shatru hiy shoolaa.

Weapons and the trishul shine in Your hands; at the sight of them, pain rises in the enemy's heart.

nagarakot men tumheen viraajat. tihunlok men dankaa baajat.

You Yourself are enthroned at Nagarkot, and Your drum resounds through the three worlds.

shumbh nishumbh daanav tum maare. raktabeej shankhan sanhaare.

You slew the asuras Shumbh and Nishumbh; You destroyed Raktabeej and Shankhasur.

mahishaasur nrip ati abhimaanee. jehi agh bhaar mahee akulaanee.

The asura king Mahishasura was exceedingly arrogant; the earth was in anguish under the weight of his sins.

roop karaal kaalikaa dhaaraa. sen sahit tum tihi sanhaaraa.

You took the dreadful form of Kalika and slew him with all his army.

24

padee bheedh santan par jab jab. bhayi sahaay maatu tum tab tab.

Whenever trouble fell upon the saints, O Maa, You came to their help.

amarapuree aru baasav lokaa. tab mahimaa sab kahen ashokaa.

In Amarpuri and in Indra's world, all tell of Your glory and are free of sorrow.

jvaalaa men hai jyoti tumhaaree. tumhen sadaa poojen nar naaree.

Your light shines in the flame at Jwala ji; men and women offer puja to You always.

27

prem bhakti se jo yash gaaven. duhkh daaridr nikat nahin aaven.

Sorrow and poverty never come near those who sing Your glory with love and bhakti.

28

dhyaave tumhen jo nar man laayi. janm maran te saun chhut jaayi.

Whoever holds You in dhyana with the whole mind is freed from birth and death.

29

jogee sur muni kahat pukaaree. yog n hoyi bin shakti tumhaaree.

Yogis, devas and sages proclaim that there is no yoga without Your Shakti.

shankar aachaaraj tap keeno. kaam aru krodh jeet sab leeno.

Shankaracharya performed tapas and conquered desire and anger entirely.

nishidin dhyaan dharo shankar ko. kaahu kaal nahin sumiro tumako.

He held Shankar in dhyana day and night, but never once remembered You.

shakti roop ko maram n paayo. shakti gayee tab man pachhataayo.

He did not grasp the secret of Your form as Shakti; when his strength left him, he repented in his heart.

sharanaagat huyi keerti bakhaanee. jay jay jay jagadanb bhavaanee.

Taking refuge in You, he sang Your glory: "Glory, glory, glory to Jagdamba Bhavani."

bhayi prasann aadi jagadanbaa. dayi shakti nahin keen vilanbaa.

Adi Jagdamba was pleased and restored his strength without delay.

moko maatu kasht ati ghero. tum bin kaun harai duhkh mero.

O Maa, great troubles surround me; who but You can take away my sorrow?

aashaa trishnaa nipat sataaven. ripu moorakh mohi ati dar paavain.

Hope and craving torment me without end, and foolish enemies fill me with fear.

37

shatru naash keejai mahaaraanee. sumiraun ikachit tumhen bhavaanee.

O Maharani, destroy my enemies; O Bhavani, I remember You alone, with a single mind.

karo kripaa he maatu dayaalaa. riddhi-siddhi de karahu nihaalaa.

O compassionate Maa, have mercy on me; grant me riddhi and siddhi and fill my life with blessing.

jab lagi jiyoo dayaa phal paavoo. tumharo yash main sadaa sunaavoo.

As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of Your mercy, and may I ever tell of Your glory.

durgaa chaaleesaa jo gaavai. sab sukh bhog paramapad paavai.

Whoever sings this Durga Chalisa enjoys every happiness and attains the highest state.

deveedaas sharan nij jaanee. karahu kripaa jagadanb bhavaanee.

Knowing that Devidas has taken refuge in You, have mercy on him, O Jagdamba Bhavani.

Closing doha

sharanaagat rakshaa kare, bhakt rahe nihshank.

You protect the one who comes to You for refuge, and Your bhakt lives free of fear.

main aayaa teree sharan men, maatu leejiye ank.

I have come to You for refuge, Maa — take me in Your lap.
