śuklāmbaradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaśivarṇaṁ caturbhujam . prasannavadanaṁ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye . 1 .
Let one hold Vishnu ji in dhyana, clothed in white, bright as the moon, four-armed, His face serene, so that every obstacle is stilled.
yasya dviradavaktrādyāḥ pāriṣadyāḥ paraḥ śatam . vighnaṁ nighnanti satataṁ viṣvaksenaṁ tamāśraye . 2 .
I take refuge in Vishvaksena, whose attendants, the elephant-faced one first among them, a hundred and more, strike down every obstacle for ever.
vyāsaṁ vasiṣṭhanaptāraṁ śakteḥ pautramakalmaṣam . parāśarātmajaṁ vande śukatātaṁ taponidhim . 3 .
I bow to Vyasa, great-grandson of Vasishtha, grandson of Shakti, son of Parashara and father of Shuka: without stain, a treasure of tapas.
vyāsāya viṣṇurūpāya vyāsarūpāya viṣṇave . namo vai brahmanidhaye vāsiṣṭhāya namo namaḥ . 4 .
I bow to Vyasa, who is Vishnu in form, and to Vishnu ji, who is Vyasa in form; again and again I bow to him of Vasishtha's line, the treasure-house of the Veda.
avikārāya śuddhāya nityāya paramātmane . sadaikarūparūpāya viṣṇave sarvajiṣṇave . 5 .
To Vishnu ji, the Supreme Self, who never changes, pure and eternal, always of one and the same form, victorious over all —
yasya smaraṇamātreṇa janmasaṁsārabandhanāt . vimucyate namastasmai viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave . 6 . oṁ namo viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave .
by merely remembering whom one is freed from the bondage of birth and the round of lives: I bow to that Vishnu, the all-powerful. Om, I bow to Vishnu ji, the all-powerful.
śrīvaiśampāyana uvāca . śrutvā dharmānaśeṣeṇa pāvanāni ca sarvaśaḥ . yudhiṣṭhiraḥ śāntanavaṁ punarevābhyabhāṣata . 7 .
Vaishampayana said: Having heard every dharma in full, and all that makes one pure, Yudhishthira spoke once more to Bhishma, the son of Shantanu.
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca . kimekaṁ daivataṁ loke kiṁ vāpyekaṁ parāyaṇam . stuvantaḥ kaṁ kamarcantaḥ prāpnuyurmānavāḥ śubham . 8 .
Yudhishthira said: Who is the one Deva in the world? What is the one highest refuge? Praising whom, and offering puja to whom, may people reach what is good?
ko dharmaḥ sarvadharmāṇāṁ bhavataḥ paramo mataḥ . kiṁ japanmucyate janturjanmasaṁsārabandhanāt . 9 .
Of all dharmas, which do you hold to be the highest? By saying what, over and over, is a living being freed from the bondage of birth and the round of lives?
bhīṣma uvāca . jagatprabhuṁ devadevamanantaṁ puruṣottamam . stuvan nāmasahasreṇa puruṣaḥ satatotthitaḥ . 10 .
Bhishma said: A person who, ever ready, praises with the thousand names the Master of the world, the Deva of devas, the Endless One, the highest of beings —
tameva cārcayannityaṁ bhaktyā puruṣamavyayam . dhyāyan stuvan namasyaṁśca yajamānastameva ca . 11 .
who offers puja with bhakti every day to that same undying Being, holding Him in dhyana, praising Him, bowing to Him, and offering yajna to Him alone —
anādinidhanaṁ viṣṇuṁ sarvalokamaheśvaram . lokādhyakṣaṁ stuvannityaṁ sarvaduḥkhātigo bhavet . 12 .
such a person, praising every day Vishnu ji — without beginning or end, the great Ishvara of all the worlds, the One who watches over them — goes beyond all sorrow.
brahmaṇyaṁ sarvadharmajñaṁ lokānāṁ kīrtivardhanam . lokanāthaṁ mahadbhūtaṁ sarvabhūtabhavodbhavam . 13 .
He praises Him who cherishes the Veda and those who keep it, who knows every dharma, who makes the fame of the worlds grow; the Master of the worlds, the great Being, the source from which every being comes to be.
eṣa me sarvadharmāṇāṁ dharmo'dhikatamo mataḥ . yadbhaktyā puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ stavairarcennaraḥ sadā . 14 .
Of all dharmas, this I hold to be the greatest: that a person should always adore the lotus-eyed One with bhakti and with songs of praise.
paramaṁ yo mahattejaḥ paramaṁ yo mahattapaḥ . paramaṁ yo mahadbrahma paramaṁ yaḥ parāyaṇam . 15 .
He who is the supreme great light, the supreme great tapas, the supreme great Brahman, the supreme refuge;
pavitrāṇāṁ pavitraṁ yo maṅgalānāṁ ca maṅgalam . daivataṁ devatānāṁ ca bhūtānāṁ yo'vyayaḥ pitā . 16 .
He who is the purest of all that purifies, the most blessed of all that is blessed, the Deva of the devas, and the undying father of all beings;
yataḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhavantyādiyugāgame . yasmiṁśca pralayaṁ yānti punareva yugakṣaye . 17 .
from whom all beings come forth when the first age dawns, and into whom they go back, dissolving, when the age ends —
tasya lokapradhānasya jagannāthasya bhūpate . viṣṇornāmasahasraṁ me śr̥ṇu pāpabhayāpaham . 18 .
O king, hear from me the thousand names of that Vishnu, foremost in all the worlds, the Master of the universe — names that take away sin and fear.
yāni nāmāni gauṇāni vikhyātāni mahātmanaḥ . r̥ṣibhiḥ parigītāni tāni vakṣyāmi bhūtaye . 19 .
The names of that great One which tell His qualities, which are well known and which the rishis have sung — these I shall tell you, for the good of all.
r̥ṣirnāmnāṁ sahasrasya vedavyāso mahāmuniḥ . chando'nuṣṭup tathā devo bhagavān devakīsutaḥ . 20 .
The rishi of the thousand names is the great sage Veda Vyasa; the metre is anushtup; and the Deva is Bhagwan, the son of Devaki.
amr̥tāṁśūdbhavo bījaṁ śaktirdevakinandanaḥ . trisāmā hr̥dayaṁ tasya śāntyarthe viniyujyate . 21 .
Its seed is Amritamshudbhava, He from whom the moon was born; its power is Devakinandana, the joy of Devaki; its heart is Trisama, He who is praised in the three Samans. It is said for peace.
viṣṇuṁ jiṣṇuṁ mahāviṣṇuṁ prabhaviṣṇuṁ maheśvaram . anekarūpadaityāntaṁ namāmi puruṣottamam . 22 .
I bow to Vishnu ji, the ever-victorious, the great Vishnu, the all-powerful, the great Ishvara, who takes many forms and puts an end to the daityas — the highest of beings.
asya śrīviṣṇordivyasahasranāmastotramahāmantrasya . śrīvedavyāso bhagavān r̥ṣiḥ . anuṣṭup chandaḥ . śrīmahāviṣṇuḥ paramātmā śrīmannārāyaṇo devatā . amr̥tāṁśūdbhavo bhānuriti bījam . devakīnandanaḥ sraṣṭeti śaktiḥ . udbhavaḥ kṣobhaṇo deva iti paramo mantraḥ . śaṅkhabhr̥nnandakī cakrīti kīlakam . śārṅgadhanvā gadādhara ityastram . rathāṅgapāṇirakṣobhya iti netram . trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāmeti kavacam . ānandaṁ parabrahmeti yoniḥ . r̥tussudarśanaḥ kāla iti digbandhaḥ . śrīviśvarūpa iti dhyānam . śrīmahāviṣṇuprītyarthe sahasranāmajape viniyogaḥ .
Of this great mantra, the thousand names of Vishnu ji: the rishi is Bhagwan Veda Vyasa; the metre is anushtup; the Deva is Shri Mahavishnu, the Supreme Self, Shriman Narayana. The seed is 'Amritamshudbhavo Bhanuh'; the power is 'Devakinandanah Srashta'; the highest mantra is 'Udbhavah Kshobhano Devah'; the pin that holds it is 'Shankhabhrin Nandaki Chakri'; the weapon is 'Sharngadhanva Gadadharah'; the eye is 'Rathangapanir Akshobhyah'; the armour is 'Trisama Samagah Sama'; the source is 'Anandam Parabrahma'; the binding of the directions is 'Rituh Sudarshanah Kalah'; the dhyana is on Shri Vishvarupa, the form that is the universe. It is taken up as japa of the thousand names, to please Shri Mahavishnu.
kṣīrodanvatpradeśe śucimaṇivilasatsaikate mauktikānāṁ mālākaॢptāsanasthaḥ sphaṭikamaṇinibhairmauktikairmaṇḍitāṅgaḥ . śubhrairabhrairadabhrairupariviracitairmuktapīyūṣavarṣai- rānandī naḥ punīyādarinalinagadāśaṅkhapāṇirmukundaḥ . 1 .
On the shore of the ocean of milk, on sands shining with pure gems, seated on a throne of pearl garlands, His body adorned with pearls clear as crystal, while full white clouds above pour down showers of nectar — may Mukunda, full of joy, who holds the discus, the lotus, the mace and the conch, make us pure.
bhūḥ pādau yasya nābhirviyadasuranilaścandrasūryau ca netre karṇāvāśāḥ śiro dyaurmukhamapi dahano yasya vāsteyamabdhiḥ . antaḥsthaṁ yasya viśvaṁ suranarakhagagobhogigandharvadaityaiḥ citraṁ raṁramyate taṁ tribhuvanavapuṣaṁ viṣṇumīśaṁ namāmi . 2 . oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya .
The earth is His feet, the sky His navel, the wind His breath, the moon and the sun His eyes; the directions are His ears, the heavens His head, fire His mouth and the ocean His belly. Within Him the whole universe — devas, people, birds, cattle, serpents, gandharvas and daityas — moves and plays in wonder. I bow to Vishnu ji, the Ishvara, whose body is the three worlds. Om, I bow to Bhagwan Vasudeva.
śāntākāraṁ bhujagaśayanaṁ padmanābhaṁ sureśaṁ viśvādhāraṁ gaganasadr̥śaṁ meghavarṇaṁ śubhāṅgam . lakṣmīkāntaṁ kamalanayanaṁ yogihr̥ddhyānagamyaṁ vande viṣṇuṁ bhavabhayaharaṁ sarvalokaikanātham . 3 .
I bow to Vishnu ji: peaceful in form, resting on the serpent, the lotus at His navel, Ruler of the devas; the support of the universe, vast as the sky, dark as a rain cloud, beautiful in every limb; beloved of Lakshmi Maa, lotus-eyed, reached by yogis in dhyana in the heart; He who takes away the fear of worldly life, the one Master of all the worlds.
meghaśyāmaṁ pītakauśeyavāsaṁ śrīvatsāṅkaṁ kaustubhodbhāsitāṅgam . puṇyopetaṁ puṇḍarīkāyatākṣaṁ viṣṇuṁ vande sarvalokaikanātham . 4 .
I bow to Vishnu ji, dark as a rain cloud, clothed in yellow silk, bearing the Shrivatsa mark, His body shining with the Kaustubha gem; full of all that is good, with long eyes like lotus petals, the one Master of all the worlds.
namaḥ samastabhūtānāmādibhūtāya bhūbhr̥te . anekarūparūpāya viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave . 5 .
I bow to Vishnu ji, the all-powerful, the first of all beings, who upholds the earth and takes form upon form.
saśaṅkhacakraṁ sakirīṭakuṇḍalaṁ sapītavastraṁ sarasīruhekṣaṇam . sahāravakṣaḥsthalaśobhikaustubhaṁ namāmi viṣṇuṁ śirasā caturbhujam . 6 .
I bow my head to four-armed Vishnu ji, with conch and discus, crown and earrings, clothed in yellow, lotus-eyed, the Kaustubha shining on His chest among the garlands.
chāyāyāṁ pārijātasya hemasiṁhāsanopari āsīnamambudaśyāmamāyatākṣamalaṁkr̥tam . candrānanaṁ caturbāhuṁ śrīvatsāṅkitavakṣasaṁ rukmiṇīsatyabhāmābhyāṁ sahitaṁ kr̥ṣṇamāśraye . 7 .
I take refuge in Krishna, seated on a golden throne in the shade of the parijata tree, dark as a rain cloud, long-eyed and adorned, His face like the moon, four-armed, the Shrivatsa on His chest, with Rukmini and Satyabhama beside Him.
hariḥ oṁ . viśvaṁ viṣṇurvaṣaṭkāro bhūtabhavyabhavatprabhuḥ . bhūtakr̥dbhūtabhr̥dbhāvo bhūtātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ . 1 .
Hari Om. He who is the universe itself and pervades it all; He for whom the vashat is called at the yajna; the Master of past, future and present; He who makes all beings and sustains them, who is their very being and their Self, and who brings them forth and nurtures them.
pūtātmā paramātmā ca muktānāṁ paramā gatiḥ . avyayaḥ puruṣaḥ sākṣī kṣetrajño'kṣara eva ca . 2 .
He whose Self is pure; the Supreme Self; the highest goal of the freed; the Undecaying; the Purusha who dwells in every body; the Witness; the Knower of the field; the Imperishable.
yogo yogavidāṁ netā pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ . nārasiṁhavapuḥ śrīmān keśavaḥ puruṣottamaḥ . 3 .
He who is reached through yoga; the Guide of those who know yoga; the Ruler of prakriti and of the soul; He who took the form of the man-lion; He with whom Shri dwells; Keshava, of the beautiful hair; the highest of beings.
sarvaḥ śarvaḥ śivaḥ sthāṇurbhūtādirnidhiravyayaḥ . sambhavo bhāvano bhartā prabhavaḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ . 4 .
He who is all; He who dissolves all; the Pure One beyond the three gunas; the Unmoving; the First of the elements; the undecaying treasure into which all returns; He who appears of His own will; the Giver of fruits; the Upholder; the Source of all; the Mighty; the Ruler.
svayambhūḥ śambhurādityaḥ puṣkarākṣo mahāsvanaḥ . anādinidhano dhātā vidhātā dhāturuttamaḥ . 5 .
He who is self-born; the Giver of happiness; the golden Being within the sun; the lotus-eyed; He of the mighty voice; without beginning or end; the Upholder of all; the Ordainer of acts and their fruits; higher even than Brahma the creator.
aprameyo hr̥ṣīkeśaḥ padmanābho'maraprabhuḥ . viśvakarmā manustvaṣṭā sthaviṣṭhaḥ sthaviro dhruvaḥ . 6 .
He who cannot be measured; Hrishikesha, the Master of the senses; He from whose navel the lotus rose; the Ruler of the devas; the Maker of the universe; the Thinker; He who wears all things thin at the end; the Most Vast; the Ancient One; the Unshaken.
agrāhyaḥ śāśvataḥ kr̥ṣṇo lohitākṣaḥ pratardanaḥ . prabhūtastrikakubdhāma pavitraṁ maṅgalaṁ param . 7 .
He whom the senses cannot grasp; the Eternal; Krishna, the dark One; the red-eyed; He who ends all at the dissolution; He who is full of every excellence; the support of the three regions, above, below and between; He who purifies; the highest good.
īśānaḥ prāṇadaḥ prāṇo jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prajāpatiḥ . hiraṇyagarbho bhūgarbho mādhavo madhusūdanaḥ . 8 .
He who rules all; the Giver of life; Life itself; the Eldest; the Most Excellent; the Master of all creatures; Hiranyagarbha, the golden womb; He who holds the earth within Him; Madhava, the beloved of Lakshmi Maa; Madhusudana, who slew the asura Madhu.
īśvaro vikramī dhanvī medhāvī vikramaḥ kramaḥ . anuttamo durādharṣaḥ kr̥tajñaḥ kr̥tirātmavān . 9 .
He who is almighty; the Valiant; the Archer; the Wise; He who strides through the worlds; He who pervades all; the Unsurpassed; He whom none can overcome; He who knows every deed done; He who is all action; He who rests in His own Self.
sureśaḥ śaraṇaṁ śarma viśvaretāḥ prajābhavaḥ . ahaḥ saṁvatsaro vyālaḥ pratyayaḥ sarvadarśanaḥ . 10 .
He who rules the devas; the Refuge; supreme Bliss; the Seed of the universe; the Source of all creatures; the Day that wakes all; the Year; He who cannot be seized, like a serpent; Knowledge itself; He who sees all.
ajaḥ sarveśvaraḥ siddhaḥ siddhiḥ sarvādiracyutaḥ . vr̥ṣākapirameyātmā sarvayogaviniḥsr̥taḥ . 11 .
He who is unborn; the Ruler of all; the ever-perfect; Fulfilment itself; the Beginning of all; Achyuta, who never falls from what He is; Vrishakapi, dharma itself, who raised the earth as the boar; He whose Self cannot be measured; He who stands free of every bond.
vasurvasumanāḥ satyaḥ samātmā'sammitaḥ samaḥ . amoghaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣo vr̥ṣakarmā vr̥ṣākr̥tiḥ . 12 .
He who dwells in all, and in whom all dwell; He whose mind is generous; the Truth; He who is the same towards all; He who is beyond all measure; He who is ever even; He whose grace never fails; the lotus-eyed; He whose deeds are dharma; He whose form is dharma.
rudro bahuśirā babhrurviśvayoniḥ śuciśravāḥ . amr̥taḥ śāśvatasthāṇurvarāroho mahātapāḥ . 13 .
He who is Rudra, who makes all weep at the end; the many-headed; the Bearer of the worlds; the Womb of the universe; He whose names are pure to hear; the Deathless; the eternal and unmoving; the highest to be reached, from which none returns; He of great tapas.
sarvagaḥ sarvavidbhānurviṣvakseno janārdanaḥ . vedo vedavidavyaṅgo vedāṅgo vedavit kaviḥ . 14 .
He who goes everywhere; He who knows all and shines; He before whose army the asuras scatter; Janardana, whom people pray to and wrongdoers fear; the Veda itself; the Knower of the Veda; He who lacks nothing; He whose limbs are the Vedangas; He who reflects on the Veda; the Seer.
lokādhyakṣaḥ surādhyakṣo dharmādhyakṣaḥ kr̥tākr̥taḥ . caturātmā caturvyūhaścaturdaṁṣṭraścaturbhujaḥ . 15 .
He who watches over the worlds, over the devas, and over dharma and adharma; He who is both what is made and what is unmade; He of four selves; He of four forms, Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha; He with four tusks as the man-lion; He with four arms.
bhrājiṣṇurbhojanaṁ bhoktā sahiṣṇurjagadādijaḥ . anagho vijayo jetā viśvayoniḥ punarvasuḥ . 16 .
He who is pure radiance; the food that is offered; the Enjoyer of it; He who bears with all; the First-born, before the world; the Sinless; Victory itself; the Conqueror; the Source of the universe; He who dwells again and again in every body.
upendro vāmanaḥ prāṁśuramoghaḥ śucirūrjitaḥ . atīndraḥ saṅgrahaḥ sargo dhr̥tātmā niyamo yamaḥ . 17 .
He who is Upendra, Indra's younger brother; Vamana, the dwarf; the Towering One, who grew to span the worlds; He whose acts never fail; the Pure; the Mighty; He who surpasses Indra; He who gathers all into Himself; He who is creation; He who holds His Self steady; He who sets each in its place; He who governs from within.
vedyo vaidyaḥ sadāyogī vīrahā mādhavo madhuḥ . atīndriyo mahāmāyo mahotsāho mahābalaḥ . 18 .
He who is to be known; the Healer of the illness of birth; He who is ever in yoga; the Slayer of mighty asuras; Madhava, the Master of knowledge; He who is sweet as honey; He who is beyond the senses; the great Enchanter; He of great zeal; He of great strength.
mahābuddhirmahāvīryo mahāśaktirmahādyutiḥ . anirdeśyavapuḥ śrīmānameyātmā mahādridhr̥k . 19 .
He of great wisdom, great valour, great power and great splendour; He whose form cannot be described; He who is full of glory; He whose Self is beyond measure; He who held up the great mountain.
maheṣvāso mahībhartā śrīnivāsaḥ satāṁ gatiḥ . aniruddhaḥ surānando govindo govidāṁ patiḥ . 20 .
He who is the great archer; He who upholds the earth; Shrinivasa, the dwelling of Shri; the refuge of the good; Aniruddha, whom none can hold back; the joy of the devas; Govinda; the Master of those who know the Veda.
marīcirdamano haṁsaḥ suparṇo bhujagottamaḥ . hiraṇyanābhaḥ sutapāḥ padmanābhaḥ prajāpatiḥ . 21 .
He who is the brilliance of the brilliant; He who restrains the wrongdoer; the Swan; Suparna, the fair-winged; Shesha, the best of serpents; He of the golden navel; He of fine tapas; He of the lotus navel; the Master of creatures.
amr̥tyuḥ sarvadr̥k siṁhaḥ sandhātā sandhimān sthiraḥ . ajo durmarṣaṇaḥ śāstā viśrutātmā surārihā . 22 .
He who is beyond death; He who sees all; the Lion; He who joins each act to its fruit; He who enjoys those fruits; the Steadfast; the Unborn; He whom the asuras cannot bear; He who rules through the scriptures; He whose nature is renowned; the Slayer of the enemies of the devas.
gururgurutamo dhāma satyaḥ satyaparākramaḥ . nimiṣo'nimiṣaḥ sragvī vācaspatirudāradhīḥ . 23 .
He who is the Teacher; the greatest Teacher; the Abode of all and the supreme light; the True; He whose valour is true; He whose eyes close in yoga-sleep; He who never blinks, ever watchful; He who wears the Vaijayanti garland; the Master of speech; He whose understanding is vast.
agraṇīrgrāmaṇīḥ śrīmān nyāyo netā samīraṇaḥ . sahasramūrdhā viśvātmā sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt . 24 .
He who leads to the highest; the Leader of all beings; the Glorious; Justice itself; the Guide; He who moves all as the breath; the thousand-headed; the Self of the universe; the thousand-eyed; the thousand-footed.
āvartano nivr̥ttātmā saṁvr̥taḥ sampramardanaḥ . ahaḥ saṁvartako vahniranilo dharaṇīdharaḥ . 25 .
He who turns the wheel of the world; He whose Self stands free of it; He who is veiled from those lost in ignorance; He who crushes the wicked; the Sun who brings on the day; Fire; the Wind; He who holds up the earth.
suprasādaḥ prasannātmā viśvadhr̥gviśvabhugvibhuḥ . satkartā satkr̥taḥ sādhurjahnurnārāyaṇo naraḥ . 26 .
He whose grace is abundant; He whose Self is serene; He who upholds the universe and sustains it; the All-pervading; He who honours the good; He who is honoured by the honoured; the Righteous; He who draws all into Himself at the end; Narayana, the refuge of all beings; Nara, the eternal Guide.
asaṅkhyeyo'prameyātmā viśiṣṭaḥ śiṣṭakr̥cchuciḥ . siddhārthaḥ siddhasaṅkalpaḥ siddhidaḥ siddhisādhanaḥ . 27 .
He whose names and forms are countless; He whose Self is beyond measure; the Most Excellent; He who commands and guards the good; the Pure; He whose every aim is fulfilled; He whose every resolve comes true; the Giver of fulfilment; the Means of fulfilment.
vr̥ṣāhī vr̥ṣabho viṣṇurvr̥ṣaparvā vr̥ṣodaraḥ . vardhano vardhamānaśca viviktaḥ śrutisāgaraḥ . 28 .
He who is the light of every day of dharma; He who showers blessings; Vishnu; He who is the stairway of dharma; He who holds dharma within Him; He who makes all grow; He who grows into the world; He who stands apart from all; the Ocean of the Vedas.
subhujo durdharo vāgmī mahendro vasudo vasuḥ . naikarūpo br̥hadrūpaḥ śipiviṣṭaḥ prakāśanaḥ . 29 .
He whose arms are fair and strong; He whom none can hold; the Eloquent, from whom the Veda came; Mahendra, the Ruler of rulers; the Giver of wealth; Wealth itself; He of many forms; He of vast form; He who dwells in the rays and in the yajna; He who makes all shine.

He of a thousand rays; the Fire of seven tongues; He of seven flames; the Sun drawn by seven horses; the Formless; the Sinless; the Inconceivable; He who strikes fear into the wicked; He who destroys the fear of the good.
aṇurbr̥hatkr̥śaḥ sthūlo guṇabhr̥nnirguṇo mahān . adhr̥taḥ svadhr̥taḥ svāsyaḥ prāgvaṁśo vaṁśavardhanaḥ . 90 .
He who is the smallest and the vastest; the slender and the stout; He who bears the gunas and is beyond them; the Great; He whom nothing holds up; He who holds Himself up; He of the lovely face; He whose line is the most ancient; He who makes the line of creation grow.
bhārabhr̥t kathito yogī yogīśaḥ sarvakāmadaḥ . āśramaḥ śramaṇaḥ kṣāmaḥ suparṇo vāyuvāhanaḥ . 91 .
He who bears the weight of the world; He of whom the Vedas speak; the Yogi; the Master of yogis; the Giver of every wish; the resting place of all who wander in the world; He who troubles the unwise; He who wears all things down at the end; the tree of the world whose fine leaves are the Vedas; He who makes the winds blow.
dhanurdharo dhanurvedo daṇḍo damayitā damaḥ . aparājitaḥ sarvasaho niyantā'niyamo'yamaḥ . 92 .
He who bears the bow, as Rama; the Knower of the science of arms; the Rod of justice; He who disciplines; Discipline itself; the Unconquered; He who bears all; He who sets each to their task; He whom no law binds; He whom death cannot touch.
sattvavān sāttvikaḥ satyaḥ satyadharmaparāyaṇaḥ . abhiprāyaḥ priyārho'rhaḥ priyakr̥t prītivardhanaḥ . 93 .
He who is full of strength and courage; He who rests in sattva; the True; He who is devoted to truth and dharma; He whom seekers long for; He who is worthy of all that is dear; He who is worthy of puja; He who does good to all; He who makes joy grow.
vihāyasagatirjyotiḥ surucirhutabhugvibhuḥ . ravirvirocanaḥ sūryaḥ savitā ravilocanaḥ . 94 .
He whose path is the sky; Light itself; He of lovely radiance; He who receives the offerings in the fire; the All-pervading; Ravi, the sun who draws up the waters; He who shines in many ways; Surya, who brings forth all; Savita, the begetter of the world; He whose eye is the sun.
ananto hutabhugbhoktā sukhado naikajo'grajaḥ . anirviṇṇaḥ sadāmarṣī lokādhiṣṭhānamadbhutaḥ . 95 .
He who is endless; He who receives the offerings; the Enjoyer; the Giver of happiness; He who is born many times to guard dharma; the First-born; He who never grows weary; He who forgives the good when they stumble; the ground of the worlds; the Wonderful.
sanātsanātanatamaḥ kapilaḥ kapiravyayaḥ . svastidaḥ svastikr̥tsvasti svastibhuksvastidakṣiṇaḥ . 96 .
He who is time without beginning; the most ancient of the ancient; the tawny One; the Sun, who drinks the waters; the Undecaying; the Giver of well-being; the Maker of well-being; Well-being itself; He who enjoys well-being and guards it; He whose nature is to spread well-being.
araudraḥ kuṇḍalī cakrī vikramyūrjitaśāsanaḥ . śabdātigaḥ śabdasahaḥ śiśiraḥ śarvarīkaraḥ . 97 .
He who is never harsh; He who wears earrings bright as the sun, and lies coiled as Shesha; He who bears the discus; the Valiant; He whose command is mighty; He who is beyond words; He of whom all the Vedas speak; the cool dew for those who burn with sorrow; the Maker of the night.
akrūraḥ peśalo dakṣo dakṣiṇaḥ kṣamiṇāṁvaraḥ . vidvattamo vītabhayaḥ puṇyaśravaṇakīrtanaḥ . 98 .
He who is never cruel; the Gentle and graceful; the Skilful; the Generous; the best of the forgiving; the wisest of the wise; He who is free of fear; He whose names, heard and sung, make one pure.
uttāraṇo duṣkr̥tihā puṇyo duḥsvapnanāśanaḥ . vīrahā rakṣaṇaḥ santo jīvanaḥ paryavasthitaḥ . 99 .
He who carries us across the ocean of the world; He who destroys wrong deeds; the Pure; He who ends bad dreams; He who cuts off the paths that bind; the Protector; He who dwells in the good; the Life of all; He who pervades everything.
anantarūpo'nantaśrīrjitamanyurbhayāpahaḥ . caturaśro gabhīrātmā vidiśo vyādiśo diśaḥ . 100 .
He whose forms are endless; He whose glory is endless; He who has conquered anger; He who takes away fear; He who is just, giving each their due; He whose Self is deep; He who gives varied fruits; He who gives varied commands; He who gives the fruit of every act.
anādirbhūrbhuvo lakṣmīḥ suvīro rucirāṅgadaḥ . janano janajanmādirbhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ . 101 .
He who has no beginning; the ground of the earth itself; the glory of the earth; the great Hero; He who wears lovely armlets; He who brings all beings to birth; the root of every birth; the Awesome; He whose valour the wicked dread.
ādhāranilayo'dhātā puṣpahāsaḥ prajāgaraḥ . ūrdhvagaḥ satpathācāraḥ prāṇadaḥ praṇavaḥ paṇaḥ . 102 .
He who is the home of all that upholds; He whom none upholds; He whose smile opens like a flower; the ever-wakeful; He who stands above all; He who walks the good path; He who gives back life; Om, the Pranava; He who deals to each the fruit of their deeds.
pramāṇaṁ prāṇanilayaḥ prāṇabhr̥tprāṇajīvanaḥ . tattvaṁ tattvavidekātmā janmamr̥tyujarātigaḥ . 103 .
He who is the measure of all truth; the dwelling of the life-breaths; He who nourishes all life; He who keeps all creatures alive; the Truth itself; the Knower of the truth; the one Self; He who is beyond birth, death and old age.
bhūrbhuvaḥsvastarustāraḥ savitā prapitāmahaḥ . yajño yajñapatiryajvā yajñāṅgo yajñavāhanaḥ . 104 .
He who is the tree of bhuh, bhuvah and svah, the three worlds; He who carries across; Savita, the father of all; the great-grandsire, father even of Brahma; the yajna; the Master of the yajna; the one who offers it; He whose limbs are the yajna; He who carries the yajna to its fruit.
yajñabhr̥d yajñakr̥d yajñī yajñabhug yajñasādhanaḥ . yajñāntakr̥d yajñaguhyamannamannāda eva ca . 105 .
He who upholds the yajna; He who made the yajna; the Master of the yajna; He who receives the yajna; He whom the yajna reaches; He who brings the yajna to its close; the secret of the yajna; the Food; and the Eater of the food.
ātmayoniḥ svayañjāto vaikhānaḥ sāmagāyanaḥ . devakīnandanaḥ sraṣṭā kṣitīśaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ . 106 .
He who is His own source; the Self-born; He who dug through the earth as the Boar; the Singer of the Samans; Devakinandana, the joy of Devaki; the Creator; the Master of the earth; the Destroyer of sin.
śaṅkhabhr̥nnandakī cakrī śārṅgadhanvā gadādharaḥ . rathāṅgapāṇirakṣobhyaḥ sarvapraharaṇāyudhaḥ . 107 . śrīsarvapraharaṇāyudha oṁ nama iti .
He who bears the conch; He who bears the sword Nandaka; He who bears the discus; He who bears the bow Sharnga; He who bears the mace; He who holds the chariot-wheel in His hand; He whom nothing can shake; He whose weapons are every weapon there is. To Him who bears every weapon: Om, I bow.
vanamālī gadī śārṅgī śaṅkhī cakrī ca nandakī . śrīmān nārāyaṇo viṣṇurvāsudevo'bhirakṣatu . 108 . śrīvāsudevo'bhirakṣatu oṁ nama iti .
May He who wears the garland of forest flowers, who bears the mace, the bow Sharnga, the conch, the discus and the sword Nandaka — the glorious Narayana, Vishnu, Vasudeva — protect us. May Shri Vasudeva protect us: Om, I bow.
bhīṣma uvāca . itīdaṁ kīrtanīyasya keśavasya mahātmanaḥ . nāmnāṁ sahasraṁ divyānāmaśeṣeṇa prakīrtitam . 1 .
Bhishma said: Thus have I told in full the thousand divine names of the great Keshava, whose glory is ever to be sung.
ya idaṁ śr̥ṇuyānnityaṁ yaścāpi parikīrtayet . nāśubhaṁ prāpnuyātkiñcitso'mutreha ca mānavaḥ . 2 .
Whoever hears these every day, or recites them, meets with no harm of any kind, in this world or the next.
vedāntago brāhmaṇaḥ syātkṣatriyo vijayī bhavet . vaiśyo dhanasamr̥ddhaḥ syācchūdraḥ sukhamavāpnuyāt . 3 .
A brahmana gains mastery of the Vedanta; a kshatriya becomes victorious; a vaishya grows rich; a shudra finds happiness.
dharmārthī prāpnuyāddharmamarthārthī cārthamāpnuyāt . kāmānavāpnuyātkāmī prajārthī cāpnuyātprajām . 4 .
One who seeks dharma gains dharma; one who seeks wealth gains wealth; one who has wishes sees them fulfilled; and one who longs for children is blessed with children.
bhaktimān yaḥ sadotthāya śucistadgatamānasaḥ . sahasraṁ vāsudevasya nāmnāmetatprakīrtayet . 5 .
One who, full of bhakti, rises early, clean, the mind set on Him, and recites these thousand names of Vasudeva —
yaśaḥ prāpnoti vipulaṁ yāti prādhānyameva ca . acalāṁ śriyamāpnoti śreyaḥ prāpnotyanuttamam . 6 .
wins wide fame and rises to the first place; he gains a prosperity that does not waver, and the highest good of all.
na bhayaṁ kvacidāpnoti vīryaṁ tejaśca vindati . bhavatyarogo dyutimānbalarūpaguṇānvitaḥ . 7 .
He never meets with fear; he finds valour and radiance; he becomes free of illness, bright, and gifted with strength, beauty and good qualities.
rogārto mucyate rogādbaddho mucyeta bandhanāt . bhayānmucyeta bhītastu mucyetāpanna āpadaḥ . 8 .
The sick are freed from sickness and the bound from their bonds; the frightened are freed from fear, and those in trouble from their trouble.
durgāṇyatitaratyāśu puruṣaḥ puruṣottamam . stuvannāmasahasreṇa nityaṁ bhaktisamanvitaḥ . 9 .
A person who praises Purushottama every day with the thousand names, full of bhakti, soon crosses every hardship.
vāsudevāśrayo martyo vāsudevaparāyaṇaḥ . sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā yāti brahma sanātanam . 10 .
One who takes refuge in Vasudeva and gives himself wholly to Vasudeva is cleansed of every sin and reaches the eternal Brahman.
na vāsudevabhaktānāmaśubhaṁ vidyate kvacit . janmamr̥tyujarāvyādhibhayaṁ naivopajāyate . 11 .
For the bhaktas of Vasudeva there is no harm anywhere; the fear of birth, death, old age and illness never arises in them.
imaṁ stavamadhīyānaḥ śraddhābhaktisamanvitaḥ . yujyetātmasukhakṣāntiśrīdhr̥tismr̥tikīrtibhiḥ . 12 .
One who recites this stotra with faith and bhakti is blessed with joy of heart, patience, prosperity, steadiness, memory and a good name.
na krodho na ca mātsaryaṁ na lobho nāśubhā matiḥ . bhavanti kr̥tapuṇyānāṁ bhaktānāṁ puruṣottame . 13 .
In the good-hearted who love Purushottama there arises no anger, no envy, no greed and no wicked thought.
dyauḥ sacandrārkanakṣatrā khaṁ diśo bhūrmahodadhiḥ . vāsudevasya vīryeṇa vidhr̥tāni mahātmanaḥ . 14 .
The heavens with the moon, the sun and the stars, the sky, the directions, the earth and the great ocean are all upheld by the might of the great Vasudeva.
sasurāsuragandharvaṁ sayakṣoragarākṣasam . jagadvaśe vartatedaṁ kr̥ṣṇasya sacarācaram . 15 .
This whole world, moving and unmoving, with its devas, asuras and gandharvas, its yakshas, serpents and rakshasas, stands under Krishna's sway.
indriyāṇi mano buddhiḥ sattvaṁ tejo balaṁ dhr̥tiḥ . vāsudevātmakānyāhuḥ kṣetraṁ kṣetrajña eva ca . 16 .
The senses, the mind and the understanding, courage, radiance, strength and steadiness — the wise say all of these are Vasudeva, and so are the body and the one who knows it.
sarvāgamānāmācāraḥ prathamaṁ parikalpate . ācāraprabhavo dharmo dharmasya prabhuracyutaḥ . 17 .
Of all the scriptures, right conduct is set first; dharma springs from right conduct; and the Master of dharma is Achyuta.
r̥ṣayaḥ pitaro devā mahābhūtāni dhātavaḥ . jaṅgamājaṅgamaṁ cedaṁ jagannārāyaṇodbhavam . 18 .
The rishis, the ancestors, the devas, the great elements, the metals, and this whole world of moving and unmoving things have all come from Narayana.
yogo jñānaṁ tathā sāṅkhyaṁ vidyāḥ śilpādikarma ca . vedāḥ śāstrāṇi vijñānametatsarvaṁ janārdanāt . 19 .
Yoga, knowledge and Sankhya, the branches of learning, crafts and every skill, the Vedas, the shastras and all understanding — all of this comes from Janardana.
eko viṣṇurmahadbhūtaṁ pr̥thagbhūtānyanekaśaḥ . trīṁllokānvyāpya bhūtātmā bhuṅkte viśvabhugavyayaḥ . 20 .
Vishnu is the one great Being, appearing as the many separate beings; the Self of all beings, the undecaying One who sustains the universe, He pervades the three worlds and enjoys them.
imaṁ stavaṁ bhagavato viṣṇorvyāsena kīrtitam . paṭhedya icchetpuruṣaḥ śreyaḥ prāptuṁ sukhāni ca . 21 .
Whoever wishes to gain the highest good, and happiness too, should recite this stotra to Bhagwan Vishnu, sung by Vyasa.
viśveśvaramajaṁ devaṁ jagataḥ prabhumavyayam . bhajanti ye puṣkarākṣaṁ na te yānti parābhavam . 22 . na te yānti parābhavam oṁ nama iti .
Those who adore the lotus-eyed Deva — the Ruler of the universe, unborn, the undecaying Master of the world — never meet with defeat. They never meet with defeat: Om, I bow.
arjuna uvāca . padmapatraviśālākṣa padmanābha surottama . bhaktānāmanuraktānāṁ trātā bhava janārdana . 23 .
Arjuna said: O You whose eyes are wide as lotus petals, O Padmanabha, highest of the devas, O Janardana — be the protector of the bhaktas who love You.
śrībhagavānuvāca . yo māṁ nāmasahasreṇa stotumicchati pāṇḍava . so'hamekena ślokena stuta eva na saṁśayaḥ . 24 . stuta eva na saṁśaya oṁ nama iti .
Bhagwan said: O Pandava, whoever wishes to praise Me with the thousand names — by even a single shloka I am praised; of this there is no doubt. I am praised; there is no doubt: Om, I bow.
vyāsa uvāca . vāsanādvāsudevasya vāsitaṁ bhuvanatrayam . sarvabhūtanivāso'si vāsudeva namo'stu te . 25 . śrīvāsudeva namo'stu ta oṁ nama iti .
Vyasa said: The three worlds are filled with Vasudeva, for He dwells in them all. O Vasudeva, You are the dwelling of all beings; I bow to You. O Shri Vasudeva, I bow to You: Om, I bow.
pārvatyuvāca . kenopāyena laghunā viṣṇornāmasahasrakam . paṭhyate paṇḍitairnityaṁ śrotumicchāmyahaṁ prabho . 26 .
Parvati said: O Prabhu, I wish to hear by what easy means the wise may say the thousand names of Vishnu every day.
īśvara uvāca . śrīrāmarāmarāmeti rame rāme manorame . sahasranāmatattulyaṁ rāmanāma varānane . 27 . śrīrāmanāma varānana oṁ nama iti .
Ishvara said: Saying 'Shri Rama, Rama, Rama', I delight in Rama, who delights the heart. O fair-faced Devi, the name of Rama is equal to the thousand names. The name of Shri Rama, O fair-faced Devi: Om, I bow.
brahmovāca . namo'stvanantāya sahasramūrtaye sahasrapādākṣiśirorubāhave . sahasranāmne puruṣāya śāśvate sahasrakoṭīyugadhāriṇe namaḥ . 28 . sahasrakoṭīyugadhāriṇe nama oṁ nama iti .
Brahma said: I bow to the Endless One, of a thousand forms, with a thousand feet, eyes, heads, thighs and arms; to the eternal Purusha of a thousand names, who upholds a thousand crore yugas. To Him who upholds a thousand crore yugas: Om, I bow.
sañjaya uvāca . yatra yogeśvaraḥ kr̥ṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanurdharaḥ . tatra śrīrvijayo bhūtirdhruvā nītirmatirmama . 29 .
Sanjaya said: Wherever Krishna, the Master of yoga, is, and wherever Arjuna the archer is, there are fortune, victory, well-being and steady justice. That is my conviction.
śrībhagavānuvāca . ananyāścintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate . teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yogakṣemaṁ vahāmyaham . 30 .
Bhagwan said: Those who think of Me alone and adore Me, ever steadfast — for them I bring what they lack and keep safe what they have.
paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkr̥tām . dharmasaṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge . 31 .
To protect the good, to destroy those who do evil, and to set dharma firmly in place, I come into being age after age.
ārtā viṣaṇṇāḥ śithilāśca bhītāḥ ghoreṣu ca vyādhiṣu vartamānāḥ . saṅkīrtya nārāyaṇaśabdamātraṁ vimuktaduḥkhāḥ sukhino bhavanti . 32 .
Those who are distressed, downcast, worn out and afraid, or caught in terrible illness — by merely saying the name 'Narayana' they are freed from their sorrow and become happy.
kāyena vācā manasendriyairvā buddhyātmanā vā prakr̥teḥ svabhāvāt . karomi yadyat sakalaṁ parasmai nārāyaṇāyeti samarpayāmi . 33 .
Whatever I do — with body, speech or mind, with the senses, with the intellect or the heart, or simply from my own nature — all of it I offer to the Supreme, to Narayana.
yadakṣarapadabhraṣṭaṁ mātrāhīnaṁ tu yadbhavet . tatsarvaṁ kṣamyatāṁ deva nārāyaṇa namo'stu te .
Whatever syllable or word has slipped, wherever a measure fell short — forgive all of it, O Deva. O Narayana, I bow to You.
visargabindumātrāṇi padapādākṣarāṇi ca . nyūnāni cātiriktāni kṣamasva puruṣottama .
Visargas, anusvaras and measures, words, quarter-verses and syllables — whatever was too little or too much, forgive it, O Purushottama.
