Durga Maa

Durga Maa

The Devi of Navratri

durge durghaṭa bhārī tujaviṇa saṁsārī.

O Durga, without You this worldly life is hard beyond bearing.

anāthanāthe aṁbe karuṇā vistārī.

O Amba, refuge of those who have no one, spread Your compassion over us.

vārī vārīṁ janmamaraṇāte vārī.

Ward off, ward off, ward off the round of birth and death.

hārī paḍalo ātā saṁkaṭa nīvārī.

I am beaten and fallen; now take my trouble away.

jaya devī jaya devī jaya mahiṣāsuramathanī.

Victory to You, O Devi, victory to You — victory to You who crushed Mahishasur.

suravaraīśvaravarade tāraka saṁjīvanī.

You grant boons to the great devas and to Ishvara; You carry us across, You give life anew.

tribhuvanī bhuvanī pāhatā tuja aisī nāhī.

Search all the three worlds, and there is none like You.

cārī śramale paraṁtu na bolave kāhī.

The four Vedas grew weary, and still could not put You into words.

sāhī vivāda karitāṁ paḍile pravāhī.

The six schools of thought, arguing, were swept away in the stream.

te tūṁ bhaktālāgī pāvasi lavalāhī.

Yet You, that same Devi, come swiftly to Your bhakta.

jaya devī jaya devī jaya mahiṣāsuramathanī.

Victory to You, O Devi, victory to You — victory to You who crushed Mahishasur.

suravaraīśvaravarade tāraka saṁjīvanī.

You grant boons to the great devas and to Ishvara; You carry us across, You give life anew.

prasannavadane prasanna hosī nijadāsāṁ.

O You of the smiling face, You are pleased with those who are Your own.

kleśāpāsūni soḍī toḍī bhavapāśā.

You free them from their suffering and cut the noose of this worldly life.

aṁbe tujavācūna koṇa puravila āśā.

O Amba, who but You will fulfil our hopes?

narahari tallīna jhālā padapaṁkajaleśā.

Narahari is lost in even a trace of Your lotus feet.

jaya devī jaya devī jaya mahiṣāsuramathanī.

Victory to You, O Devi, victory to You — victory to You who crushed Mahishasur.

suravaraīśvaravarade tāraka saṁjīvanī.

You grant boons to the great devas and to Ishvara; You carry us across, You give life anew.
