માર્કણ્ડેય ઉવાચ ।
ૐ યદ્ગુહ્યં પરમં લોકે સર્વરક્ષાકરં નૃણામ્ ।
યન્ન કસ્યચિદાખ્યાતં તન્મે બ્રૂહિ પિતામહ॥
Markandeya said: O Grandfather! Please tell me that supreme secret in this world which gives all protection to people, and which has not been revealed to anyone.
બ્રહ્મોવાચ ।
અસ્તિ ગુહ્યતમં વિપ્ર સર્વભૂતોપકારકમ્ ।
દેવ્યાસ્તુ કવચં પુણ્યં તચ્છૃણુષ્વ મહામુને॥
Brahma said: O Brahmin, there is the most secret and useful to all beings. It is the sacred armour of the Devi; listen to it, O great sage.
પ્રથમં શૈલપુત્રી ચ દ્વિતીયં બ્રહ્મચારિણી ।
તૃતીયં ચન્દ્રઘણ્ટેતિ કૂષ્માણ્ડેતિ ચતુર્થકમ્॥
The first is Shailaputri, the second is Brahmacharini, the third is Chandraghanta, and the fourth is Kushmanda.
પઞ્ચમં સ્કન્દમાતેતિ ષષ્ઠં કાત્યાયનીતિ ચ ।
સપ્તમં કાલરાત્રીતિ મહાગૌરીતિ ચાષ્ટમમ્॥
The fifth is Skandamata, the sixth is Katyayani, the seventh is Kalaratri, and the eighth is Mahagauri.
નવમં સિદ્ધિદાત્રી ચ નવદુર્ગાઃ પ્રકીર્તિતાઃ ।
ઉક્તાન્યેતાનિ નામાનિ બ્રહ્મણૈવ મહાત્મના॥
The ninth is Siddhidatri; these are known as the Navadurgas. These names have been declared by the great soul Brahma himself.
અગ્નિના દહ્યમાનસ્તુ શત્રુમધ્યે ગતો રણે ।
વિષમે દુર્ગમે ચૈવ ભયાર્ત્તાઃ શરણં ગતાઃ॥
Those who are burning in fire, surrounded by enemies in battle, or caught in an impassable crisis, and who seek refuge in Her,
ન તેષાં જાયતે કિંચિદશુભં રણસંકટે ।
નાપદં તસ્ય પશ્યામિ શોકદુઃખભયં ન હિ॥
No inauspiciousness befalls them in the peril of war. I see no calamity, nor any fear of grief or sorrow for them.
યૈસ્તુ ભક્ત્યા સ્મૃતા નૂનં તેષાં વૃદ્ધિઃ પ્રજાયતે ।
યે ત્વાં સ્મરન્તિ દેવેશિ રક્ષસે તાન્ન સંશયઃ॥
Those who remember You with devotion, their prosperity surely increases. O Supreme Devi, there is no doubt that You protect those who remember You.
પ્રેતસંસ્થા તુ ચામુણ્ડા વારાહી મહિષાસના ।
ઐન્દ્રી ગજસમારૂઢા વૈષ્ણવી ગરુડાસના॥
Chamunda rides on corpses, Varahi rides on a buffalo, Aindri is mounted on an elephant, and Vaishnavi is seated on Garuda.
માહેશ્વરી વૃષારૂઢા કૌમારી શિખિવાહના ।
લક્ષ્મીઃ પદ્માસના દેવી પદ્મહસ્તા હરિપ્રિયા॥
Maheshwari rides on a bull, Kaumari rides on a peacock, Lakshmi, the beloved of Hari, is seated on a lotus and holds a lotus in her hand.
શ્વેતરૂપધરા દેવી ઈશ્વરી વૃષવાહના ।
બ્રાહ્મી હંસસમારૂઢા સર્વાભરણભૂષિતા॥
The Devi Ishwari, of white complexion, rides on a bull. Brahmi, adorned with all ornaments, is seated on a swan.
ઇત્યેતા માતરઃ સર્વાઃ સર્વયોગસમન્વિતાઃ ।
નાનાભરણશોભાઢ્યા નાનારત્નોપશોભિતાઃ॥
All these mothers are endowed with all yogic powers. They are adorned with various ornaments and studded with various gems.
દૃશ્યન્તે રથમારૂઢા દેવ્યઃ ક્રોધસમાકુલાઃ ।
શઙ્ખં ચક્રં ગદાં શક્તિં હલં ચ મુસલાયુધમ્॥
The devis are seen mounted on chariots, filled with anger. They hold a conch, discus, mace, spear, plough, and club,
ખેટકં તોમરં ચૈવ પરશું પાશમેવ ચ ।
કુન્તાયુધં ત્રિશૂલં ચ શાર્ઙ્ગમાયુધમુત્તમમ્॥
A shield, javelin, axe, noose, spear, trident, and the excellent bow named Sharnga.
દૈત્યાનાં દેહનાશાય ભક્તાનામભયાય ચ ।
ધારયન્ત્યાયુધાનીત્થં દેવાનાં ચ હિતાય વૈ॥
They hold these weapons for the destruction of the bodies of asuras, for the protection of those who turn to her, and for the welfare of the gods.
નમસ્તેઽસ્તુ મહારૌદ્રે મહાઘોરપરાક્રમે ।
મહાબલે મહોત્સાહે મહાભયવિનાશિનિ॥
Salutations to You, O exceedingly fierce one, of terrifying prowess, of great strength, of great enthusiasm, and the destroyer of great fears.
ત્રાહિ માં દેવિ દુષ્પ્રેક્ષ્યે શત્રૂણાં ભયવર્દ્ધિનિ ।
પ્રાચ્યાં રક્ષતુ મામૈન્દ્રી આગ્નેય્યામગ્નિદેવતા॥
Protect me, O Devi, who is difficult to look at and who increases the fear of enemies. May Aindri protect me in the east, and the deity of fire in the southeast.
દક્ષિણેઽવતુ વારાહી નૈરૃત્યાં ખડ્ગધારિણી ।
પ્રતીચ્યાં વારુણી રક્ષેદ્વાયવ્યાં મૃગવાહિની॥
May Varahi protect me in the south, and the sword-wielding devi in the southwest. May Varuni protect me in the west, and the deer-riding devi in the northwest.
ઉદીચ્યાં પાતુ કૌમારી ઐશાન્યાં શૂલધારિણી ।
ઊર્ધ્વં બ્રહ્માણિ મે રક્ષેદધસ્તાદ્વૈષ્ણવી તથા॥
May Kaumari protect me in the north, and the trident-wielding devi in the northeast. May Brahmani protect me from above, and Vaishnavi from below.
એવં દશ દિશો રક્ષેચ્ચામુણ્ડા શવવાહના ।
જયા મે ચાગ્રતઃ પાતુ વિજયા પાતુ પૃષ્ઠતઃ॥
Thus may Chamunda, who rides on a corpse, protect the ten directions. May Jaya protect me in the front, and Vijaya protect me in the back.
અજિતા વામપાર્શ્વે તુ દક્ષિણે ચાપરાજિતા ।
શિખામુદ્યોતિની રક્ષેદુમા મૂર્ધ્નિ વ્યવસ્થિતા॥
May Ajita protect my left side and Aparajita my right. May Dyotini protect my hair and Uma sit on my head and protect it.
માલાધરી લલાટે ચ ભ્રુવૌ રક્ષેદ્યશસ્વિની ।
ત્રિનેત્રા ચ ભ્રુવોર્મધ્યે યમઘણ્ટા ચ નાસિકે॥
May Maladhari protect my forehead and Yashasvini my eyebrows. May Trinetra protect the space between my eyebrows and Yamaghanta my nose.
શઙ્ખિની ચક્ષુષોર્મધ્યે શ્રોત્રયોર્દ્વારવાસિની ।
કપોલૌ કાલિકા રક્ષેત્ કર્ણમૂલે તુ શાઙ્કરી॥
May Shankhini protect the space between my eyes and Dvaravasini my ears. May Kalika protect my cheeks and Shankari the roots of my ears.
નાસિકાયાં સુગન્ધા ચ ઉત્તરોષ્ઠે ચ ચર્ચિકા ।
અધરે ચામૃતાકલા જિહ્વાયાં ચ સરસ્વતી॥
May Sugandha protect my nose and Charchika my upper lip. May Amritakala protect my lower lip and Sarasvati my tongue.
દન્તાન્ રક્ષતુ કૌમારી કણ્ઠમધ્યે તુ ચણ્ડિકા ।
ઘણ્ટિકાં ચિત્રઘણ્ટા ચ મહામાયા ચ તાલુકે॥
May Kaumari protect my teeth and Chandika the middle of my throat. May Chitraghanta protect my uvula and Mahamaya my palate.
કામાક્ષી ચિબુકં રક્ષેદ્વાચં મે સર્વમઙ્ગલા ।
ગ્રીવાયાં ભદ્રકાલી ચ પૃષ્ઠવંશે ધનુર્ધરી॥
May Kamakshi protect my chin and Sarvamangala my speech. May Bhadrakali protect my neck and Dhanurdhari my spine.
નીલગ્રીવા બહિઃકણ્ઠે નલિકાં નલકૂબરી ।
સ્કન્ધયોઃ ખડ્ગિની રક્ષેદ્બાહૂ મે વજ્રધારિણી॥
May Nilagriva protect the outer part of my throat and Nalakubari my windpipe. May Khadgini protect my shoulders and Vajradharini my arms.
હસ્તયોર્દણ્ડિની રક્ષેદમ્બિકા ચાઙ્ગુલીષુ ચ ।
નખાઞ્છૂલેશ્વરી રક્ષેત્ કુક્ષૌ રક્ષેત્કુલેશ્વરી॥
May Dandini protect both my hands and Ambika my fingers. May Shuleshvari protect my nails and Nareshvari my abdomen.
સ્તનૌ રક્ષેન્મહાદેવી મનઃ શોકવિનાશિની ।
હૃદયં લલિતા દેવી ઉદરે શૂલધારિણી॥
May Mahadevi protect my breasts and Shokavinashini my mind. May Lalita Devi protect my heart and Shuladharini my stomach.
નાભૌ ચ કામિની રક્ષેદ્ગુહ્યં ગુહ્યેશ્વરી તથા ।
ભૂતનાથા ચ મેઢ્રં મે ગુદે મહિષવાહિની॥
May Kamini protect my navel and Guhyeshvari my hidden parts. May Bhutanatha protect my reproductive organs and Mahishavahini my thighs.
કટ્યાં ભગવતી રક્ષેજ્જાનુની વિન્ધ્યવાસિની ।
જઙ્ઘે મહાબલા પ્રોક્તા સર્વકામપ્રદાયિની॥
May Bhagavati protect my waist and Vindhyavasini my knees. May Mahabala, the granter of all desires, protect my calves.
ગુલ્ફયોર્નારસિંહી ચ પાદપૃષ્ઠામિતૌજસી ।
પાદાઙ્ગુલીષુ શ્રીરક્ષેત્ પાદાધઃસ્થલવાસિની॥
May Narasimhi protect my ankles and Amitaujasi the back of my feet. May Shri protect my toes and Padadhasthalavasini the soles of my feet.
નખાન્ દંષ્ટ્રા કરાલી ચ કેશાંશ્ચૈવોર્ધ્વકેશિની ।
રોમકૂપેષુ કૌબેરી ત્વચં વાગીશ્વરી તથા॥
May Damshtrakarali protect my toenails and Urdhvakeshini my hair. May Kauberi protect the pores of my skin and Vagishvari my skin.
રક્તમજ્જાવસામાંસાન્યસ્થિમેદાંસિ પાર્વતી ।
અન્ત્રાણિ કાલરાત્રિશ્ચ પિત્તં ચ મુકુટેશ્વરી॥
May Parvati protect my blood, marrow, fat, flesh, bones, and lymph. May Kalaratri protect my intestines and Mukuteshvari my bile.
પદ્માવતી પદ્મકોશે કફે ચૂડામણિસ્તથા ।
જ્વાલામુખી નખજ્વાલામભેદ્યા સર્વસન્ધિષુ॥
May Padmavati protect the lotuses (chakras) and Chudamani the phlegm. May Jvalamukhi protect the luster of my nails and Abhedya all my joints.
શુક્રં બ્રહ્માણિ મે રક્ષેચ્છાયાં છત્રેશ્વરી તથા ।
અહઙ્કારં મનો બુદ્ધિં રક્ષેન્મે ધર્મધારિણી॥
May Brahmani protect my semen and Chatreshvari my shadow. May Dharmadharini protect my ego, mind, and intellect.
પ્રાણાપાનૌ તથા વ્યાનમુદાનં ચ સમાનકમ્ ।
વજ્રહસ્તા ચ મે રક્ષેત્પ્રાણં કલ્યાણશોભના॥
May Vajrahasta protect the five vital airs: prana, apana, vyana, udana, and samana. May Kalyana Shobhana protect my life force.
રસે રૂપે ચ ગન્ધે ચ શબ્દે સ્પર્શે ચ યોગિની ।
સત્ત્વં રજસ્તમશ્ચૈવ રક્ષેન્નારાયણી સદા॥
May Yogini protect the senses of taste, sight, smell, sound, and touch. May Narayani always protect the qualities of sattva, rajas, and tamas.
આયૂ રક્ષતુ વારાહી ધર્મં રક્ષતુ વૈષ્ણવી ।
યશઃ કીર્તિં ચ લક્ષ્મીં ચ ધનં વિદ્યાં ચ ચક્રિણી॥
May Varahi protect my life and Vaishnavi my dharma. May Chakrini protect my fame, reputation, wealth, and knowledge.
ગોત્રમિન્દ્રાણિ મે રક્ષેત્પશૂન્મે રક્ષ ચણ્ડિકે ।
પુત્રાન્ રક્ષેન્મહાલક્ષ્મીર્ભાર્યાં રક્ષતુ ભૈરવી॥
May Indrani protect my lineage and Chandika my cattle. May Mahalakshmi protect my children and Bhairavi my wife.
ધનેશ્વરી ધનં રક્ષેત્ કૌમારી કન્યકાં તથા ।
પન્થાનં સુપથા રક્ષેન્માર્ગં ક્ષેમઙ્કરી તથા॥
Let Dhaneshwari protect the wealth, and Kumari protect the daughter. Let Supatha protect the journey, and Kshemankari protect the way.
રાજદ્વારે મહાલક્ષ્મીર્વિજયા સતત સ્થિતા ।
રક્ષાહીનં તુ યત્ સ્થાનં વર્જિતં કવચેન તુ॥
At the king's gate, let Mahalakshmi and Vijaya always stand. And whatever place is left unprotected by this armour,
તત્સર્વં રક્ષ મે દેવિ જયન્તી પાપનાશિની ।
સર્વરક્ષાકરં પુણ્યં કવચં સર્વદા જપેત્॥
O Devi Jayanti, destroyer of sins, protect all of that. One should always recite this armour which provides all-round protection.
ઇદં રહસ્યં વિપ્રર્ષે ભક્ત્યા તવ મયોદિતમ્ ।
પાદમેકં ન ગચ્છેત્ તુ યદીચ્છેચ્છુભમાત્મનઃ॥
O noble sage, this secret has been told to you with devotion. One who desires his own welfare should not take even a single step without it.
કવચેનાવૃતો નિત્યં યત્ર યત્રૈવ ગચ્છતિ ।
તત્ર તત્રાર્થલાભશ્વ વિજયઃ સાર્વકાલિકઃ॥
Wherever one goes, constantly covered by this armour, there one gains wealth and eternal victory.
યં યં ચિન્તયતે કામં તં તં પ્રાપ્નોતિ નિશ્ચિતમ્ ।
પરમૈશ્વર્યમતુલં પ્રાપ્સ્યતે ભૂતલે પુમાન્॥
Whatever desire one thinks of, one certainly attains it. That person will attain incomparable supreme wealth on earth.
નિર્ભયો જાયતે મર્ત્યઃ સઙ્ગ્રામેષ્વપરાજિતઃ ।
ત્રૈલોક્યે તુ ભવેત્પૂજ્યઃ કવચેનાવૃતઃ પુમાન્॥
The mortal becomes fearless and undefeated in battles. A person covered by this armour becomes honoured in the three worlds.
ઇદં તુ દેવ્યાઃ કવચં દેવાનામપિ દુર્લભમ્ ।
યઃ પઠેત્પ્રયતો નિત્યં ત્રિસન્ધ્યં શ્રદ્ધયાન્વિતઃ॥
This armour of the Devi is difficult even for the gods to attain. He who recites it daily with devotion during the three twilights,
દૈવીકલા ભવેત્તસ્ય ત્રૈલોક્યે ચાપરાજિતઃ ।
જીવેદ્વર્ષશતં સાગ્રમપમૃત્યુવિવર્જિતઃ॥
attains divine arts and remains undefeated in the three worlds. He lives for a full hundred years, free from untimely death.
નશ્યન્તિ વ્યાધયઃ સર્વે લૂતાવિસ્ફોટકાદયઃ ।
સ્થાવરં જઙ્ગમં ચૈવ કૃત્રિમં ચૈવ યદ્વિષમ્॥
All diseases, such as skin diseases and boils, are destroyed. All poisons, whether from immovable objects, moving creatures, or artificial sources,
અભિચારાણિ સર્વાણિ મન્ત્રયન્ત્રાણિ ભૂતલે ।
ભૂચરાઃ ખેચરાશ્ચૈવ કુલજાશ્ચૌપદેશિકાઃ॥
all black magic, mantras, and yantras on earth, as well as beings moving on earth or in the sky, those born of lineage or created by instructions,
સહજા કુલજા માલા ડાકિની શાકિની તથા ।
અન્તરિક્ષચરા ઘોરા ડાકિન્યશ્ચ મહારવાઃ॥
naturally born, born of lineage, Dakinis, Shakinis, and terrible Dakinis roaming in the space making loud noises,
ગ્રહભૂતપિશાચાશ્ચ યક્ષગન્ધર્વરાક્ષસાઃ ।
બ્રહ્મરાક્ષસવેતાલાઃ કૂષ્માણ્ડા ભૈરવાદયઃ॥
evil planets, ghosts, vampires, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Rakshasas, Brahmarakshasas, Vetalas, Kushmandas, and Bhairavas,
નશ્યન્તિ દર્શનાત્તસ્ય કવચેનાવૃતો હિ યઃ ।
માનોન્નતિર્ભવેદ્રાજ્ઞસ્તેજોવૃદ્ધિઃ પરા ભવેત્॥
all perish just by the sight of the one covered by this armour. He gains honour from the king and his radiance increases supremely.
યશોવૃદ્ધિર્ભવેત્ પુંસાં કીર્તિવૃદ્ધિશ્ચ જાયતે ।
તસ્માત્ જપેત્ સદા ભક્તઃ કવચં કામદં મુને॥
His fame and glory multiply. Therefore, O sage, one should always recite this wish-fulfilling armour.
જપેત્ સપ્તશતીં ચણ્ડીં કૃત્વા તુ કવચં પુરા ।
નિર્વિઘ્નેન ભવેત્ સિદ્ધિશ્ચણ્ડીજપસમુદ્ભવા॥
One should recite the Chandi Saptashati only after first reciting this armour. Then the success arising from the Chandi japa is achieved without obstacles.
યાવદ્ભૂમણ્ડલં ધત્તે સશૈલવનકાનનમ્ ।
તાવત્તિષ્ઠતિ મેદિન્યાં સન્તતિઃ પુત્રપૌત્રિકી॥
As long as the earth holds mountains and forests, so long will his lineage of sons and grandsons remain on earth.
દેહાન્તે પરમં સ્થાનં સુરૈરપિ સુદુર્લભમ્ ।
પ્રાપ્નોતિ પુરુષો નિત્યં મહામાયાપ્રસાદતઃ॥
At the end of life, by the grace of Mahamaya, he eternally attains the supreme state which is very difficult even for the gods to reach.
તત્ર ગચ્છતિ ગત્વાસૌ પુનશ્ચાગમનં નહિ ।
લભતે પરમં સ્થાનં શિવેન સમતાં વ્રજેત્॥
He will go there, and having gone shall surely not return. He will attain the supreme state and with the Absolute will merge.
