Durga Maa

The Devi of Navratri

1

na tāto na mātā na bandhurna dātā na putro na putrī na bhr̥tyo na bhartā. na jāyā na vidyā na vr̥ttirmamaiva gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

No father, no mother, no kinsman, no giver; no son, no daughter, no servant, no master; no wife, no learning, no livelihood is mine. You are my way, you are my way, you alone, Bhavani.

2

bhavābdhāvapāre mahāduḥkhabhīruḥ papāta prakāmī pralobhī pramattaḥ. kusaṁsārapāśaprabaddhaḥ sadāhaṁ gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

Fallen in the shoreless sea of the world, afraid of its great sorrows; full of desire, of greed, of heedlessness; always bound in the cords of a wretched round — you are my way.

3

na jānāmi dānaṁ na ca dhyānayogaṁ na jānāmi tantraṁ na ca stotramantram. na jānāmi pūjāṁ na ca nyāsayogam gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

I know nothing of giving, nothing of the way of dhyan; nothing of tantra, nor of stotra and mantra; I know neither puja nor nyasa. You are my way.

4

na jānāmi puṇyaṁ na jānāmi tīrthaṁ na jānāmi muktiṁ layaṁ vā kadācit. na jānāmi bhaktiṁ vrataṁ vāpi mātar gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

I know no merit, I know no tirtha; I have never known release or absorption; I know neither love nor the vrat, Mother. You are my way.

5

kukarmī kusaṅgī kubuddhiḥ kudāsaḥ kulācārahīnaḥ kadācāralīnaḥ. kudr̥ṣṭiḥ kuvākyaprabandhaḥ sadāham gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

Of bad deeds, bad company, bad understanding, a bad servant; without the good conduct of my line, sunk in wrong doing; of bad sight and a habit of bad words, always. You are my way.

6

prajeśaṁ rameśaṁ maheśaṁ sureśaṁ dineśaṁ niśītheśvaraṁ vā kadācit. na jānāmi cānyat sadāhaṁ śaraṇye gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Indra, the Sun, the lord of night — nor any other have I ever known, you who are the refuge. You are my way.

7

vivāde viṣāde pramāde pravāse jale cānale parvate śatrumadhye. araṇye śaraṇye sadā māṁ prapāhi gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

In quarrel, in despair, in heedlessness, in a far country; in water, in fire, on the mountain, among enemies; in the forest — refuge, always keep me. You are my way.

8

anātho daridro jarārogayukto mahākṣīṇadīnaḥ sadā jāḍyavaktraḥ. vipattau praviṣṭaḥ praṇaṣṭaḥ sadāhaṁ gatistvaṁ gatistvaṁ tvamekā bhavāni.

Orphaned, poor, worn with age and illness; utterly weakened and low, my mouth always dull; fallen into calamity and undone, always. You are my way.
