The Devi of Navratri

Opening doha

namo namo vindhyeśvarī, namo namo jagadamba.

Salutations again and again to Devi Vindhyeshwari, salutations again and again to the Mother of the universe.

santajanoṁ ke kāja meṁ, karatī nahīṁ vilamba.

She never makes any delay in fulfilling the tasks and prayers of her saintly those who keep her.

jaya jaya jaya vindhyācala rānī. ādi śakti jaga vidita bhavānī.

All victory to the Queen of Mount Vindhyachal, the primordial divine energy known throughout the world as Bhavani.

siṁha vāhinī jaya jagamātā. jaya jaya jaya tribhuvana sukhadātā.

Victory to the Mother of the universe who rides a lion, the supreme giver of happiness to all the three realms.

kaṣṭa nivārini jaya jaga devī. jaya jaya santa asura sura sevī.

Victory to the Devi who eradicates afflictions, whom sages, asuras, and celestial beings all revere.

mahimā amita apāra tumhārī. śeṣa sahasa mukha varṇata hārī.

Your majesty is boundless and immeasurable, which even the thousand-headed serpent Shesha exhausts himself trying to describe.

dīnana ke duḥkha harata bhavānī. nahiṁ dekhyo tuma sama kou dānī.

You take away the miseries of the distressed and humble, O Bhavani, and none is seen to be as generous a benefactor as You.

saba kara manasā puravata mātā. mahimā amita jagata vikhyātā.

O Mother, You grant the heart's desire of every living being, and Your boundless glory is celebrated across the cosmos.

jo jana dhyāna tumhāro lāvai. so turatahi vāṁchita phala pāvai.

Whosoever fixes their meditative awareness upon You receives the desired fruit of their longing without delay.

tumhīṁ vaiṣṇavī tumhīṁ rudrānī. tumhīṁ śāradā aru brahmānī.

You alone are Vaishnavi, You alone are Rudrani, and You are both Sharada and Brahmani.

ramā rādhikā śyāmā kālī. tumhīṁ mātu santana pratipālī.

You are Rama, Radhika, Shyama, and Kali, the divine Mother who perpetually sustains and protects the virtuous.

umā mādhavī caṇḍī jvālā. vegi mohi para hohu dayālā.

You are Uma, Madhavi, Chandi, and Jwala; please look upon me swiftly with Your merciful grace.

tumhīṁ hiṁgalāja mahārānī. tumhīṁ śītalā aru vijñānī.

You are the supreme sovereign of Hinglaj, and You are Sheetala as well as the personification of higher spiritual knowledge.

durgā durga vināśinī mātā. tumhīṁ lakṣmī jaga sukha dātā.

You are Mother Durga, the destroyer of intractable difficulties, and You are Lakshmi, who bestows joy upon the world.

tumhīṁ jāhnavī aru rudrānī. hemāvatī amba nirvānī.

You are the sacred river Ganga, Rudrani, Hemavati born of the Himalayas, and the mother who grants ultimate liberation.

aṣṭabhujī vārāhini devā. karata viṣṇu śiva jākara sevā.

You are the eight-armed Devi Varahi, whom Vishnu ji and Shiv ji constantly serve.

cauṁsaṭṭhī devī kalyānī. gauri maṁgalā saba guna khānī.

You are the benevolent force in all sixty-four Yoginis, and You are Gauri and Mangala, the treasure-house of every virtue.

pāṭana mumbādanta kumārī. bhadrakāli suna vinaya hamārī.

Appearing as the Devis of Patan, Mumba, and Dant Kumari, and as Bhadrakali, please listen to our earnest supplication.

bajradhāriṇī śoka nāśinī. āyu rakṣiṇī vindhyavāsinī.

You wield the thunderbolt, wipe away deep grief, safeguard life and longevity, and dwell upon Mount Vindhya.

jayā aura vijayā vaitālī. mātu saṁkaṭī aru vikarālī.

You manifest as Jaya, Vijaya, Vaitali, Mother Sankata who removes perils, and the formidable Vikrali.

nāma ananta tumhāra bhavānī. baranai kimi mānuṣa ajñānī.

Your divine names are infinite, O Bhavani; how can an ignorant human being adequately recount them?

20

jāpara kr̥pā mātu tava hoī. to vaha karai cahai mana joī.

Whosoever receives Your compassionate blessing, Mother, becomes capable of achieving whatever their heart desires.

21

kr̥pā karahu mopara mahārānī. siddha kariye aba yaha mama bānī.

Bestow Your mercy upon me, O Empress, and make these devotional words of mine bear spiritual fruit.

22

jo nara dharai mātu kara dhyānā. tākara sadā hoya kalyāṇā.

Whosoever concentrates their heart upon the Divine Mother will always meet with auspiciousness and well-being.

23

bipatti tāhi sapanehu nahiṁ āvai. jo devī kā jāpa karāvai.

Calamity does not approach, even in dreams, the person who arranges for the regular recitation and reciting of the Devi.

24

jo nara kaham̐ r̥ṇa hoya apārā. so nara pāṭha karai śata bārā.

If a person is overwhelmed by heavy debt, let that individual recite this stotra one hundred times.

25

niścaya r̥ṇamocana hoī jāī. jo nara pāṭha karai mana lāī.

Freedom from all debts will surely come to pass for whoever undertakes this recitation with single-minded focus.

astuti jo nara paḍhai paḍhāvai. yā jaga meṁ so bahu sukha pāvai.

The one who recites or shares this stotra of praise secures abundant happiness in this world.

27

jāko byādhi satāvai bhāī. jāpa karata saba dūra parāī.

Whomever illness torments, brother, will find all disease driven far away by reciting this prayer.

28

jo nara ati baṁdī maham̐ hoī. bāra hajāra pāṭha kara soī.

If someone finds themselves held in harsh imprisonment or confinement, let them recite this Chalisa one thousand times.

29

niścaya baṁdī te chuṭi jāī. satya vacana mama mānahu bhāī.

They will undoubtedly be released from bonds; believe these words to be true, O brother.

30

jāpara jo kucha saṁkaṭa hoī. niścaya debihi sumirai soī.

Whenever any crisis or danger befalls someone who kept her, they should turn their mind with unwavering faith to the Devi.

31

jā kaham̐ putra hoya nahi bhāī. so nara yā vidhi karai upāī.

The one who lacks an offspring, brother, should follow the prescribed ritual practice.

32

pām̐ca barasa so pāṭha karāvai. naurātara maham̐ vipra jimāvai.

Let that seeker have this text recited for five years and feed Brahmins during the sacred days of Navratri.

33

niścaya hohiṁ prasanna bhavānī. putra dehiṁ tākaham̐ guna khānī.

Devi Bhavani will surely be pleased and grant a child endowed with an abundance of noble virtues.

34

dhvajā nāriyala āna caḍhāvai. vidhi sameta pūjana karavāvai.

The one who keeps her should offer a holy ceremonial banner and a coconut, and have ritual puja performed strictly according to sacred ordinances.

nita prati pāṭha karai mana lāī. prema sahita nahi āna upāī.

Recite this stotra every single day with steady absorption and love, for there is no higher path or remedy.

36

yaha śrī vindhyācala cālīsā. raṁka paḍhata hovai avanīsā.

By reciting this sacred Shri Vindhyachal Chalisa, even an impoverished pauper can rise to become an earthly ruler.

yaha jani acaraja mānahu bhāī. kr̥pā dr̥ṣṭi jāpara hvai jāī.

Do not look upon this with wonder or disbelief, brother, for such grace unfolds wherever the compassionate glance of the Mother rests.

jaya jaya jaya jaga mātu bhavānī. kr̥pā karahu mohi para jana jānī.

All victory to the cosmic Mother Bhavani; please shower Your grace upon me, recognizing me as Your humble servant.

jo nara putra hoya nahi bhāī. puni kare vinaya mātā suni lāī.

The person without offspring who offers this earnest prayer finds the Divine Mother listening attentively.

jaya jaya mām̐ vindhyanivāsinī. bhakta janoṁ kī sukha kī dāyinī.

Victory, all victory to Mother Vindhyavasini, the eternal dispenser of joy and peace to her own.
