Opening doha

jaya gaṇeśa girijā suvana, maṁgala mūla sujāna. kahata ayodhyādāsa tuma, dehu abhaya varadāna.

Glory to Ganesh ji, son of Girija, the root of all that is good and the knower of all. Ayodhyadas says: grant us the boon of fearlessness.

Chaupai

jaya girijā pati dīna dayālā. sadā karata santana pratipālā.

Glory to Shiv ji, husband of Girija, merciful to the lowly, who ever protects the saints.

bhāla candramā sohata nīke. kānana kuṇḍala nāgaphanī ke.

The crescent Moon shines beautifully on His brow, and earrings of serpent-hoods adorn His ears.

aṁga gaura śira gaṁga bahāye. muṇḍamāla tana kṣāra lagāe.

His body is fair, the Ganga flows from His head, He wears a garland of skulls, and His body is smeared with vibhuti.

vastra khāla bāghambara sohe. chavi ko dekhi nāga muni mohe.

He is clad in the tiger skin; beholding His form, even the Nagas and the sages are enchanted.

mainā mātu kī have dulārī. bāma aṁga sohata chavi nyārī.

The beloved daughter of Mother Maina graces His left side, a beauty beyond compare.

kara triśūla sohata chavi bhārī. karata sadā śatruna kṣayakārī.

The trishul shines in His hand in great splendour, ever destroying His foes.

nandi gaṇeśa sohai taham̐ kaise. sāgara madhya kamala haiṁ jaise.

Nandi and Ganesh ji look as lovely there as lotuses in the midst of the ocean.

kārtika śyāma aura gaṇarāū. yā chavi ko kahi jāta na kāū.

Kartikeya, dark of hue, and Ganapati: no one can put this sight into words.

devana jabahīṁ jāya pukārā. taba hī dukha prabhu āpa nivārā.

Whenever the devas came and called upon You, You took away their sorrow at once, O Prabhu.

kiyā upadrava tāraka bhārī. devana saba mili tumahiṁ juhārī.

When the asura Taraka wrought great havoc, all the devas came together and bowed to You in prayer.

turata ṣaḍānana āpa paṭhāyau. lavanimeṣa maham̐ māri girāyau.

At once You sent six-faced Kartikeya, who struck the asura down in the blink of an eye.

12

āpa jalaṁdhara asura saṁhārā. suyaśa tumhāra vidita saṁsārā.

You Yourself destroyed the asura Jalandhar, and Your glory is known throughout the world.

tripurāsura sana yuddha macāī. sabahiṁ kr̥pā kara līna bacāī.

You gave battle to Tripurasur and, in Your grace, saved all.

kiyā tapahiṁ bhāgīratha bhārī. puraba pratijñā tāsu purārī.

When Bhagirath performed severe tapas, You fulfilled his sankalp, O Purari, destroyer of Tripura.

15

dānina maham̐ tuma sama kou nāhīṁ. sevaka stuti karata sadāhīṁ.

Among givers there is none like You; Your sevaks sing Your praise always.

veda nāma mahimā tava gāī. akatha anādi bheda nahiṁ pāī.

The Vedas have sung the glory of Your name, yet none has found the secret of You, the Ineffable, the Beginningless.

prakaṭī udadhi maṁthana meṁ jvālā. jarata surāsura bhae vihālā.

When the fire of poison rose from the churning of the ocean, devas and asuras alike burned and were in anguish.

18

kīnhī dayā tahaṁ karī sahāī. nīlakaṇṭha taba nāma kahāī.

You took pity and came to their aid, drinking the poison; so You came to be called Neelkanth, the Blue-throated.

pūjana rāmacaṁdra jaba kīnhā. jīta ke laṁka vibhīṣaṇa dīnhā.

When Shri Ram offered puja to You, He conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishan.

20

sahasa kamala meṁ ho rahe dhārī. kīnha parīkṣā tabahiṁ tripurārī.

As Shri Ram was offering You a thousand lotuses, You put Him to the test, O Tripurari.

eka kamala prabhu rākheu joī. kamala nayana pūjana cahaṁ soī.

You hid one lotus, O Prabhu, and the lotus-eyed Shri Ram resolved to offer His own eye in its place.

kaṭhina bhakti dekhī prabhu śaṁkara. bhaye prasanna die icchita vara.

Seeing such steadfast bhakti, O Shankar, You were pleased and granted Him the boon He desired.

23

jaya jaya jaya anaṁta avināśī. karata kr̥pā saba ke ghaṭavāsī.

Glory, glory, glory to You, the Infinite, the Imperishable, who dwell in every heart and show grace to all.

24

duṣṭa sakala nita mohi satāvai. bhramata rahe mohi caina na āvai.

The wicked torment me without end; I wander in confusion and find no peace.

25

trāhi trāhi maiṁ nātha pukāro. yaha avasara mohi āna ubāro.

"Save me, save me," I cry to You, O Master; come now and rescue me in this hour.

26

lai triśūla śatruna ko māro. saṁkaṭa se mohi āna ubāro.

Take up Your trishul and slay my foes; come and deliver me from this peril.

27

mātu pitā bhrātā saba koī. saṁkaṭa meṁ pūchata nahiṁ koī.

Mother, father, brothers, everyone: in a time of trouble, no one asks after us.

28

svāmī eka hai āsa tumhārī. āya harahu aba saṁkaṭa bhārī.

O Swami, You alone are my hope; come now and take away this heavy trouble.

29

dhana nirdhana ko deta sadāhīṁ. jo koī jāṁce vo phala pāhīṁ.

You ever give wealth to the poor; whoever asks of You receives the fruit.

30

astuti kehi vidhi karauṁ tumhārī. kṣamahu nātha aba cūka hamārī.

How am I to sing Your praise? O Master, forgive us our failings.

31

śaṁkara ho saṁkaṭa ke nāśana. maṁgala kāraṇa vighna vināśana.

O Shankar, You destroy all troubles; You are the cause of all good and the remover of obstacles.

32

yogī yati muni dhyāna lagāvaiṁ. nārada śārada śīśa navāvaiṁ.

Yogis, ascetics and sages hold You in dhyana; Narad and Saraswati Maa bow their heads before You.

33

namo namo jaya namo śivāya. sura brahmādika pāra na pāya.

I bow to You again and again; glory to You, Om Namah Shivaya. Even Brahma ji and the devas could not find the end of You.

34

jo yaha pāṭha kare mana lāī. tā pāra hota hai śambhu sahāī.

Whoever recites this path with a whole heart crosses over, for Shambhu is their help.

35

ॠniyā jo koī ho adhikārī. pāṭha kare so pāvana hārī.

Whoever is burdened with debt and recites this path is freed and made pure.

36

putra hīna kara icchā koī. niścaya śiva prasāda tehi hoī.

Anyone desiring a child will surely be blessed with one by Shiv ji's grace.

paṇḍita trayodaśī ko lāve. dhyāna pūrvaka homa karāve.

Call a pandit on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, and have a havan done with a mind held on Shiv ji.

38

trayodaśī brata kare hameśā. tana nahīṁ tāke rahe kaleśā.

Whoever keeps the Trayodashi vrat always will have no suffering in the body.

39

dhūpa dīpa naivedya caḍhāve. śaṁkara sammukha pāṭha sunāve.

Offer dhoop, a diya and naivedya, and recite this path before Shiv ji.

40

janma janma ke pāpa nasāve. antavāsa śivapura meṁ pāve.

The sins of many births are destroyed, and in the end one dwells in Shivpur, Shiv ji's own abode.

41

kahai ayodhyā āsa tumhārī. jāni sakala duḥkha harahu hamārī.

Ayodhyadas says: "You are my hope. Knowing all our sorrows, take them away."

Closing doha

nitya nema kara prātaḥ hī, pāṭha karauṁ cālīsā. tuma merī manokāmanā, pūrṇa karo jagadīśa.

Keeping it as a daily rule, I recite this Chalisa every morning. O Jagdish, Master of the world, fulfil the wishes of my heart.

magasara chaṭhi hemanta ॠtu, saṁvata causaṭha jāna. astuti cālīsā śivahi, pūrṇa kīna kalyāṇa.

On the sixth day of the Margashirsha month during the Hemant season, in the Samvat year 64, this Chalisa in praise of Shiv ji was completed for the welfare of all.
