Pitru Stotra

1

arcitānāmamūrtānāṁ pitaॄṇāṁ dīptatejasām.

To the pitars — honoured, without form, blazing with light —

namasyāmi sadā teṣāṁ dhyānināṁ divyacakṣuṣām.

I bow always, to them held in dhyan, whose eyes see beyond this world.

2

indrādīnāṁ ca netāro dakṣamārīcayostathā.

Those who lead Indra and the others, Daksha and Marichi,

saptarṣīṇāṁ tathānyeṣāṁ tānnamasyāmi kāmadān.

the seven rishis and others besides — to them, the givers of what is wished for, I bow.

3

manvādīnāṁ ca netāraḥ sūryācandramasostathā.

Those who lead Manu and the others, the Sun and the Moon —

tānnamasyāmyahaṁ sarvān pitaॄnapyudadhāvapi.

to all those pitars I bow, and to the pitars in the ocean too.

4

nakṣatrāṇāṁ grahāṇāṁ ca vāyvagnyornabhasastathā.

Those of the stars and the planets, of wind and fire and the sky,

dyāvāpr̥thivyośca tathā namasyāmi kr̥tāñjaliḥ.

of heaven and earth — to them I bow with joined palms.

5

devarṣīṇāṁ janitaॄṁśca sarvalokanamaskr̥tān.

The fathers of the devarshis, honoured by every world,

akṣayyasya sadā dātaॄn namasye'haṁ kr̥tāñjaliḥ.

who always give what never runs out — to them I bow with joined palms.

6

prajāpateḥ kaśyapāya somāya varuṇāya ca.

To Prajapati, to Kashyapa, to Soma and to Varuna,

yogeśvarebhyaśca sadā namasyāmi kr̥tāñjaliḥ.

and to the masters of yoga, always, I bow with joined palms.

7

namo gaṇebhyaḥ saptabhyastathā lokeṣu saptasu.

Salutations to the seven hosts of pitars in the seven worlds;

svayambhuve namasyāmi brahmaṇe yogacakṣuṣe.

I bow to self-born Brahma, whose eye is yoga.

8

somādhārān pitr̥gaṇān yogamūrtidharāṁstathā.

To the hosts of pitars who rest on Soma, who take the form of yoga,

namasyāmi tathā somaṁ pitaraṁ jagatāmaham.

I bow; and to Soma, the father of the worlds.

9

agnirūpāṁstathaivānyān namasyāmi pitaॄnaham.

I bow as well to the other pitars, whose form is fire,

agnisomamayaṁ viśvaṁ yata etadaśeṣataḥ.

for this whole world, all of it, is made of fire and Soma.

10

ye ca tejasi ye caite somasūryāgnimūrtayaḥ.

Those who dwell in light, whose forms are the Moon, the Sun and fire,

jagatsvarūpiṇaścaiva tathā brahmasvarūpiṇaḥ.

who are the world itself, and who are Brahman itself —

11

tebhyo'khilebhyo yogibhyaḥ pitr̥bhyo yatamānasaḥ.

to all of them, the yogis, the pitars, with a mind held still:

namo namo namaste'stu prasīdantu svadhābhujaḥ.

salutations, salutations, salutations; may they who take svadha be pleased.
