Shiv ji

Shiv ji

The still centre; Monday's deity

oṁ jaya śiva oṁkārā, svāmī jaya śiva oṁkārā.

Om, glory to Shiv ji, whose form is Om; O Swami, glory to Shiv ji, whose form is Om.

brahmā viṣṇu sadāśiva arddhāṁgī dhārā.

You are Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiv, and You bear the Devi as half of Yourself.

ekānana caturānana paṁcānana rāje.

In Your one-faced, four-faced and five-faced forms You shine;

haṁsāsana garuḍāsana vr̥ṣavāhana sāje.

You are resplendent seated on the swan, on Garuda, and riding the bull.

do bhuja cāra caturbhuja dasa bhuja te sohe.

With two arms, with four arms, with ten arms You are adorned;

tīnoṁ rūpa nirakhatā tribhuvana jana mohe.

beholding Your three forms, the people of the three worlds are enchanted.

akṣamālā vanamālā muṇḍamālā dhārī.

You wear the akshamala, the garland of forest flowers and the garland of skulls;

caṁdana mr̥gamada sohe bhāle śaśidhārī.

chandan and musk adorn Your brow, O bearer of the Moon.

śvetāmbara pītāmbara bāghambara aṁge.

White cloth, yellow silk and the tiger skin adorn Your body;

sanakādika garuṇādika bhūtādika saṁge.

Sanaka and the sages, Garuda and his kind, and the bhoot-ganas are ever with You.

kara ke madhya kamaṁḍalu cakra triśūladhārī.

In Your hands You hold the kamandalu, the chakra and the trishul;

sukhakārī dukhahārī jagapālana kārī.

You give joy, You take away sorrow, You sustain the world.

brahmā viṣṇu sadāśiva jānata avivekā.

Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiv — only the undiscerning take them to be three;

praṇavākṣara madhye ye tīnoṁ ekā.

within the syllable Om these three are one.

lakṣmī va sāvitrī pārvatī saṁgā.

Lakshmi Maa, Savitri and Parvati Maa are at your side;

pārvatī arddhāṁgī, śivalaharī gaṁgā.

Parvati Maa is half of your body, and Ganga Maa flows from you in waves.

parvata sohaiṁ pārvatī, śaṁkara kailāsā.

Parvati Maa shines on the mountain, and Shankar dwells on Kailash;

bhāṁga dhatūra kā bhojana, bhasmī meṁ vāsā.

bhang and dhatura are your food, and you live in ash.

jaṭā meṁ gaṁga bahata hai, gala muṇḍana mālā.

Ganga Maa flows in your matted hair, and a garland of skulls hangs at your throat;

śeṣa nāga lipaṭāvata, oḍhata mr̥gachālā.

Shesh Naag winds about you, and you wear a deerskin.

kāśī meṁ virāje viśvanātha, nandī brahmacārī.

In Kashi you sit as Vishwanath, with Nandi, the brahmachari, before you;

nita uṭha darśana pāvata, mahimā ati bhārī.

those who rise each day and come for your darshan know how great your glory is.

triguṇa śiva jī kī āratī jo koī nara gāve.

Whoever sings this aarti of Shiv ji, who holds the three gunas,

kahata śivānaṁda svāmī manavāṁchita phala pāve.

says Swami Shivanand, gains the fruit their heart desires.
