Let one hold in dhyana the supreme Mother: Her form red as sindoor, three-eyed, the moon shining on Her crown of rubies; smiling, full-bosomed, holding in Her hands a jewelled cup brimming with nectar and a red lotus; gentle, Her red feet resting on a jewelled pot.

I contemplate Bhavani as my own very self: She who is red as the dawn, Her eyes rippling with compassion, holding the noose, the goad, the flower-arrows and the bow, ringed as if by rays by the powers Anima and the rest.

Let one hold in dhyana Bhavani seated on a lotus, Her face in bloom, Her eyes long as lotus petals; golden, in yellow silk, a golden lotus shining in Her hand, lovely of limb; wearing every ornament, ever granting freedom from fear, She to whom the bhaktas bow; Shri Vidya, the form of peace, praised by all the devas, giver of every kind of wealth.

At the time of japa, let one remember Ambika: anointed with kumkum, musk kissing Her brow, Her glance soft with a smile, bearing arrows, bow, noose and goad; She who enchants every being, clothed and adorned in red garlands and jewels, glowing like the hibiscus flower.

She is the Mother, the great Queen, the Queen of the glorious lion throne; She who rose from the fire-altar of pure consciousness, ready to do the work of the devas.

She shines like a thousand rising suns and has four arms; She holds the noose that is desire, and is bright with the goad that is anger.
manorūpekṣukodaṇḍā pañcatanmātrasāyakā . nijāruṇaprabhāpūramajjadbrahmāṇḍamaṇḍalā . 3 .
Her sugarcane bow is the mind and Her arrows the five subtle elements; the whole round of the universe is drowned in the flood of Her own red light.
campakāśokapunnāgasaugandhikalasatkacā . kuruvindamaṇiśreṇīkanatkoṭīramaṇḍitā . 4 .
Her hair gleams with champak, ashoka, punnaga and saugandhika flowers; She is adorned with a crown that glitters with rows of kuruvinda rubies.

Her forehead shines like the moon of the eighth night; the musk mark on it is like the dark spot on the moon of Her face.

Her eyebrows are the festive arch at the door of Kama's house, which is Her face; Her eyes are like fish darting in the stream of beauty that flows from it.

Her nose is lovely as a fresh champak bud; She shines with a nose-jewel whose light puts the stars to shame.

She is lovely with sprays of kadamba flowers over Her ears; the sun and the moon are the pair of earrings She wears.

Her cheeks outshine mirrors of ruby; Her lips put fresh coral and the bimba fruit to shame.

Her two rows of teeth shine like the first shoots of pure knowledge; the fragrance of the camphor betel She chews draws the world from every quarter.

The sweetness of Her speech shames Kacchapi, Saraswati's vina; the flood of Her soft smile drowns the mind of Kameshvara.

Her bosom is what She gives in return for the jewel of Kameshvara's love; Her breasts are the fruit of the fine line of hair that rises like a creeper from the basin of Her navel.

Her waist is so slender it can only be inferred from the line of hair it bears; the band that holds it, bending under the weight of Her bosom, forms three folds.

Her shins are like Kama's quivers set about with red indragopa; Her ankles are rounded and hidden, and the arches of Her feet outdo the tortoise's back.

The light of Her toenails clears away the darkness of all who bow to Her; the radiance of Her two feet outshines the lotus.

Her lotus feet are adorned with jewelled anklets that tinkle; She walks slow and graceful as a swan, a great treasure-house of beauty.

She is red all over, flawless in every limb, adorned with every ornament; She sits on the lap of Kameshvara, who is Shiva; She is Shiva's own, all goodness, and Her Beloved is ever Hers.

She sits on the middle peak of Sumeru, Queen of the glorious city; She dwells within the house of chintamani, the wish-jewel, seated on the throne of the five Brahmas.

She dwells in the great lotus forest and lives in the kadamba grove; She stands in the midst of the ocean of nectar, Kamakshi of the lovely eyes, who grants every wish.
devarṣigaṇasaṅghātastūyamānātmavaibhavā . bhaṇḍāsuravadhodyuktaśaktisenāsamanvitā . 24 .
Her greatness is praised by hosts of devas and rishis; She leads the army of shaktis set on slaying the asura Bhanda.
sampatkarīsamārūḍhasindhuravrajasevitā . aśvārūḍhādhiṣṭhitāśvakoṭikoṭibhirāvr̥tā . 25 .
She is attended by herds of elephants led by Sampatkari, and surrounded by millions upon millions of horses under Ashvarudha.

She rides the chariot Chakraraja, armed with every weapon; Mantrini, riding the chariot Geyachakra, attends on Her.

Dandanatha, riding the chariot Kirichakra, goes before Her; She stands at the centre of the rampart of fire that Jvalamalini has raised.

She rejoices when Mahaganesha shatters the yantra of obstacles; She showers a counter-weapon on every weapon that Bhanda, king of the asuras, lets fly.

From the nails of Her fingers She brought forth the ten forms of Narayana; She burnt the asura armies in the fire of the great Pashupata weapon.

With the Kameshvara weapon She burnt Bhanda together with his city Shunyaka; Her glory is praised by Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and all the devas.

She is the herb of life that revived Kama, burnt by the fire of Hara's eye; Her lotus face is the Vagbhava kuta, the first part of Her mantra.

From Her throat to Her waist She is the middle kuta; below Her waist She is the Shakti kuta alone.

She is the root mantra itself, and its three kutas are Her body; She delights in the nectar of Kula alone, and guards the secret ways of the Kula path.

She is the lady of the Kula, dwelling within it, Kaulini, the yogini of the Kula; She is also beyond all Kula, dwelling within Samaya and devoted to the Samaya way.

Her own dwelling is the Muladhara, and She pierces the knot of Brahma; She rises in the Manipura and pierces the knot of Vishnu.

She stands within the Ajna chakra and pierces the knot of Rudra; She ascends to the thousand-petalled lotus and pours down streams of nectar.

She is bright as a streak of lightning and dwells above the six chakras; She is Mahasakti, who delights in the great festival of Her union with Shiva; She is Kundalini, finer than a lotus fibre.

She is Bhavani, reached through deep contemplation, an axe to the forest of worldly life; She loves all that is good, is goodness itself, and gives good fortune to Her bhaktas.
bhaktipriyā bhaktigamyā bhaktivaśyā bhayāpahā . śāmbhavī śāradārādhyā śarvāṇī śarmadāyinī . 42 .
She loves bhakti, is reached by bhakti and won by bhakti, and She takes fear away; She is Shambhavi, adored by Sharada, Sharvani, the giver of joy.

She is Shankari, who brings joy and plenty, the faithful one, Her face like the autumn moon; slender of waist, full of peace, resting on nothing, touched by no stain.
nirlepā nirmalā nityā nirākārā nirākulā . nirguṇā niṣkalā śāntā niṣkāmā nirupaplavā . 44 .
She is untainted, pure, eternal, without form, without unrest; beyond the gunas, without parts, at peace, without desire, beyond all harm.
nityamuktā nirvikārā niṣprapañcā nirāśrayā . nityaśuddhā nityabuddhā niravadyā nirantarā . 45 .
She is ever free, changeless, beyond the spread of the world, depending on nothing; ever pure, ever awake, without fault, unbroken everywhere.
niṣkāraṇā niṣkalaṅkā nirupādhirnirīśvarā . nīrāgā rāgamathanī nirmadā madanāśinī . 46 .
She is without cause, without stain, without limit, with none above Her; without passion, She ends passion; without pride, She ends pride.
niścintā nirahaṅkārā nirmohā mohanāśinī . nirmamā mamatāhantrī niṣpāpā pāpanāśinī . 47 .
She is without care, without ego, without delusion, and destroys delusion; with no sense of 'mine', She ends that sense in others; without sin, She destroys sin.
niṣkrodhā krodhaśamanī nirlobhā lobhanāśinī . niḥsaṁśayā saṁśayaghnī nirbhavā bhavanāśinī . 48 .
She is without anger and calms anger; without greed, She destroys greed; without doubt, She kills doubt; She has no birth, and She ends the round of births.
nirvikalpā nirābādhā nirbhedā bhedanāśinī . nirnāśā mr̥tyumathanī niṣkriyā niṣparigrahā . 49 .
She is beyond all wavering thought, undisturbed, without division, and removes division; She never perishes and overcomes death; She is beyond action and owns nothing.
nistulā nīlacikurā nirapāyā niratyayā . durlabhā durgamā durgā duḥkhahantrī sukhapradā . 50 .
She is beyond compare, Her hair dark and shining, never failing, never overstepped; hard to win, hard to reach, She is Durga, who ends sorrow and gives joy.
duṣṭadūrā durācāraśamanī doṣavarjitā . sarvajñā sāndrakaruṇā samānādhikavarjitā . 51 .
She is far from the wicked and puts an end to wrong conduct, free of every fault; She knows all, Her compassion is deep, and none is equal to Her or above Her.

She holds every power, She is all that is good, and She gives the true goal; She rules all, is present in all, and is the very form of every mantra.

She is the soul of every yantra and the form of every tantra, Manonmani beyond the mind; She is Maheshvari, Mahadevi, Mahalakshmi, the beloved of Shiva.

Great is Her form, greatest of all to be honoured, She destroys even the gravest sins; She is the great Maya, great in goodness, great in power, great in delight.
mahābhogā mahaiśvaryā mahāvīryā mahābalā . mahābuddhirmahāsiddhirmahāyogeśvareśvarī . 55 .
Great are Her joys, Her sovereignty, Her valour and Her strength; great Her understanding and Her attainment; She is Queen even of the great lords of yoga.

She is the great tantra, the great mantra, the great yantra, seated on the great seat; She is adored by the order of the great yaga, and Mahabhairava offers puja to Her.

She is witness to Maheshvara's great dance at the end of the great age; She is the great Queen of Mahakameshvara, Mahatripurasundari.
catuḥṣaṣṭyupacārāḍhyā catuḥṣaṣṭikalāmayī . mahācatuḥṣaṣṭikoṭiyoginīgaṇasevitā . 58 .
She is honoured with the sixty-four offerings and holds the sixty-four arts; She is served by the great hosts of yoginis, sixty-four crores of them.
manuvidyā candravidyā candramaṇḍalamadhyagā . cārurūpā cāruhāsā cārucandrakalādharā . 59 .
She is the vidya of Manu and the vidya of the Moon, dwelling at the centre of the Moon's disc; lovely of form, lovely of smile, She wears the lovely crescent moon.
carācarajagannāthā cakrarājaniketanā . pārvatī padmanayanā padmarāgasamaprabhā . 60 .
She rules the world of all that moves and all that is still, and dwells in the Shri Chakra; She is Parvati, lotus-eyed, with the glow of a ruby.
pañcapretāsanāsīnā pañcabrahmasvarūpiṇī . cinmayī paramānandā vijñānaghanarūpiṇī . 61 .
She is seated on the five pretas, the five Brahmas who lie lifeless without Her, and is the five Brahmas Herself; She is consciousness, supreme bliss, knowing made solid.
dhyānadhyātr̥dhyeyarūpā dharmādharmavivarjitā . viśvarūpā jāgariṇī svapantī taijasātmikā . 62 .
She is dhyana, the one who holds it, and the One held in it; She is beyond merit and demerit; the whole world is Her form; She is waking, She is dreaming, and She is the soul of the dreamer.
suptā prājñātmikā turyā sarvāvasthāvivarjitā . sr̥ṣṭikartrī brahmarūpā goptrī govindarūpiṇī . 63 .
She is deep sleep and its soul, the fourth state beyond, and free of every state; She creates as Brahma, and protects in the form of Govinda.
saṁhāriṇī rudrarūpā tirodhānakarīśvarī . sadāśivānugrahadā pañcakr̥tyaparāyaṇā . 64 .
She withdraws all things in the form of Rudra, and as Ishvari She veils them; as Sadashiva She gives grace; She is given to the five acts.
bhānumaṇḍalamadhyasthā bhairavī bhagamālinī . padmāsanā bhagavatī padmanābhasahodarī . 65 .
She dwells at the centre of the sun's disc, Bhairavi, garlanded with the six excellences; She is seated on a lotus, Bhagavati, the sister of Padmanabha.
unmeṣanimiṣotpannavipannabhuvanāvalī . sahasraśīrṣavadanā sahasrākṣī sahasrapāt . 66 .
Rows of worlds arise as She opens Her eyes and vanish as She closes them; She has a thousand heads and faces, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet.
ābrahmakīṭajananī varṇāśramavidhāyinī . nijājñārūpanigamā puṇyāpuṇyaphalapradā . 67 .
She is Mother of all, from Brahma to the smallest insect, and sets the order of varna and ashrama; the Vedas are Her own command, and She gives the fruit of good and bad deeds.

The dust of Her lotus feet is the sindoor in the parting of the Vedas' hair; She is the pearl held in the shell of all the scriptures together.
puruṣārthapradā pūrṇā bhoginī bhuvaneśvarī . ambikā'nādinidhanā haribrahmendrasevitā . 69 .
She grants the four aims of life, She is whole and full, She enjoys, She rules the worlds; She is Ambika, without beginning or end, served by Hari, Brahma and Indra.
nārāyaṇī nādarūpā nāmarūpavivarjitā . hrīṅkārī hrīmatī hr̥dyā heyopādeyavarjitā . 70 .
She is Narayani, whose form is sound, beyond name and form; She is the syllable hrim, full of modesty, dwelling in the heart, with nothing to take up or set aside.
rājarājārcitā rājñī ramyā rājīvalocanā . rañjanī ramaṇī rasyā raṇatkiṅkiṇimekhalā . 71 .
The king of kings offers Her puja; She is the Queen, lovely, lotus-eyed; She delights the heart, gives joy, is joy to taste, and wears a girdle of tinkling bells.
ramā rākenduvadanā ratirūpā ratipriyā . rakṣākarī rākṣasaghnī rāmā ramaṇalampaṭā . 72 .
She is Rama, Her face the full moon, the very form of Rati and dear to Rati; She protects, She slays the rakshasas, She is joy, and She delights in Her Beloved.
kāmyā kāmakalārūpā kadambakusumapriyā . kalyāṇī jagatīkandā karuṇārasasāgarā . 73 .
She is the one to be longed for, the form of Kamakala, fond of kadamba flowers; She is Kalyani, all goodness, the root of the world, an ocean of compassion.
kalāvatī kalālāpā kāntā kādambarīpriyā . varadā vāmanayanā vāruṇīmadavihvalā . 74 .
She is full of every art, sweet of speech, beautiful, fond of the drink kadambari; She grants boons, Her eyes are lovely, and She is lost in the rapture of varuni, the nectar of bliss.
viśvādhikā vedavedyā vindhyācalanivāsinī . vidhātrī vedajananī viṣṇumāyā vilāsinī . 75 .
She is above the universe, known through the Vedas, dwelling on the Vindhya mountain; She creates and sustains, She is Mother of the Vedas, Vishnu's Maya, and full of play.
kṣetrasvarūpā kṣetreśī kṣetrakṣetrajñapālinī . kṣayavr̥ddhivinirmuktā kṣetrapālasamarcitā . 76 .
She is the field, the body, and its Queen, guarding both the field and the knower of the field; She is free of waning and waxing, and the guardians of the field offer Her puja.
vijayā vimalā vandyā vandārujanavatsalā . vāgvādinī vāmakeśī vahnimaṇḍalavāsinī . 77 .
She is ever victorious, spotless, worthy of every bow, and loving to all who bow to Her; She is the voice that speaks, Her hair is lovely, and She dwells in the circle of fire.
bhaktimatkalpalatikā paśupāśavimocinī . saṁhr̥tāśeṣapāṣaṇḍā sadācārapravartikā . 78 .
She is the wish-granting creeper to those who have bhakti, and frees bound souls from their bonds; She sweeps away every false path and sets good conduct going.
tāpatrayāgnisantaptasamāhlādanacandrikā . taruṇī tāpasārādhyā tanumadhyā tamo'pahā . 79 .
She is the moonlight that cools and gladdens those scorched by the three fires of suffering; She is ever young, adored by ascetics, slender of waist, the remover of darkness.

She is the three Vedas, the home of the three aims of life, dwelling in the three, Tripuramalini; She is free of all ills, resting on nothing, delighting in Her own Self, a stream of nectar.
saṁsārapaṅkanirmagnasamuddharaṇapaṇḍitā . yajñapriyā yajñakartrī yajamānasvarūpiṇī . 164 .
She is skilled in lifting out those sunk in the mire of worldly life; She loves the yajna, performs it, and is Herself the one for whom it is performed.
dharmādhārā dhanādhyakṣā dhanadhānyavivardhinī . viprapriyā viprarūpā viśvabhramaṇakāriṇī . 165 .
She upholds dharma, She is the keeper of wealth, She makes wealth and grain increase; She loves the learned, She is in their form, and She keeps the world turning.
viśvagrāsā vidrumābhā vaiṣṇavī viṣṇurūpiṇī . ayoniryoninilayā kūṭasthā kularūpiṇī . 166 .
She swallows the universe, glows like coral, She is Vaishnavi, Vishnu in form; She has no source and is the source of all, unchanging as the anvil, the Kula in form.
vīragoṣṭhīpriyā vīrā naiṣkarmyā nādarūpiṇī . vijñānakalanā kalyā vidagdhā baindavāsanā . 167 .
She loves the company of heroes and is heroic, beyond action, sound itself in form; She is the fullness of knowing, fit to create, wise in all things, seated in the bindu.
tattvādhikā tattvamayī tattvamarthasvarūpiṇī . sāmagānapriyā saumyā sadāśivakuṭumbinī . 168 .
She is above the tattvas and made of them, the very meaning of 'That' and 'You'; She loves the singing of the Sama Veda, She is gentle, and She is Sadashiva's wife.
savyāpasavyamārgasthā sarvāpadvinivāriṇī . svasthā svabhāvamadhurā dhīrā dhīrasamarcitā . 169 .
She is reached by the right-hand path and the left, and wards off every calamity; She rests in Herself, sweet by nature, wise, adored by the wise.
caitanyārghyasamārādhyā caitanyakusumapriyā . sadoditā sadātuṣṭā taruṇādityapāṭalā . 170 .
She is adored with consciousness as the arghya, and loves consciousness as Her flower; She is ever risen, ever content, rosy as the young morning sun.
dakṣiṇādakṣiṇārādhyā darasmeramukhāmbujā . kaulinīkevalā'narghyakaivalyapadadāyinī . 171 .
She is adored by the wise and the simple alike, Her lotus face lit by a soft smile; She is Kaulini, the one alone, and gives the priceless state of liberation.
stotrapriyā stutimatī śrutisaṁstutavaibhavā . manasvinī mānavatī maheśī maṅgalākr̥tiḥ . 172 .
She loves stutis and is what every stuti praises; the Vedas sing Her glory; She is high-minded, full of dignity, Mahesha's Queen, all goodness in form.
viśvamātā jagaddhātrī viśālākṣī virāgiṇī . pragalbhā paramodārā parāmodā manomayī . 173 .
She is Mother of the universe, the nurse of the world, wide-eyed, free of attachment; bold and assured, supremely generous, supremely joyful, made of mind.
vyomakeśī vimānasthā vajriṇī vāmakeśvarī . pañcayajñapriyā pañcapretamañcādhiśāyinī . 174 .
The sky is Her hair, She rides in a celestial chariot, She bears the vajra, She is Vamakeshvari; She loves the five yajnas, and rests on the couch of the five pretas.

She is the fifth, the Queen of the five elements, honoured with the five offerings; She is eternal, of eternal sovereignty, the giver of joy, who enchants Shambhu.
dharā dharasutā dhanyā dharmiṇī dharmavardhinī . lokātītā guṇātītā sarvātītā śamātmikā . 176 .
She is the Earth, the daughter of the mountain, blessed, righteous, the one who makes dharma grow; beyond the worlds, beyond the gunas, beyond all, peace itself.
bandhūkakusumaprakhyā bālā līlāvinodinī . sumaṅgalī sukhakarī suveṣāḍhyā suvāsinī . 177 .
She is bright as the bandhuka flower, Bala the ever-young, delighting in play; She is ever blessed as a wife, the giver of joy, richly and beautifully dressed, a suvasini.
suvāsinyarcanaprītā''śobhanā śuddhamānasā . bindutarpaṇasantuṣṭā pūrvajā tripurāmbikā . 178 .
She is pleased when suvasinis offer Her puja, radiant, pure of mind; She is content with offerings to the bindu, the first-born, Tripurambika.
daśamudrāsamārādhyā tripurāśrīvaśaṅkarī . jñānamudrā jñānagamyā jñānajñeyasvarūpiṇī . 179 .
She is adored with the ten mudras, and holds Tripurashri in Her sway; She is the jnana mudra, reached by knowledge, both knowledge and the known.
yonimudrā trikhaṇḍeśī triguṇā'mbā trikoṇagā . anaghā'dbhutacāritrā vāñchitārthapradāyinī . 180 .
She is the yoni mudra, Queen of the three parts, the Mother of the three gunas, dwelling in the triangle; She is sinless, wondrous in Her deeds, and grants every wish.
abhyāsātiśayajñātā ṣaḍadhvātītarūpiṇī . avyājakaruṇāmūrtirajñānadhvāntadīpikā . 181 .
She is known through long and steady practice, and Her form is beyond the six paths; She is compassion that asks no reason, the diya that ends the darkness of ignorance.
ābālagopaviditā sarvānullaṅghyaśāsanā . śrīcakrarājanilayā śrīmattripurasundarī . 182 .
She is known to all, down to children and cowherds, and none can set Her command aside; She dwells in the Shri Chakra, king of chakras, the glorious Tripurasundari.
śrīśivā śivaśaktyaikyarūpiṇī lalitāmbikā . evaṁ śrīlalitādevyā nāmnāṁ sāhasrakaṁ jaguḥ . 183 .
She is Shri Shiva, the oneness of Shiva and Shakti in form, Lalitambika. So did Vashini and the devis of speech sing the thousand names of Shri Lalita Devi.
