satyaṁ bravīmi paralokahitaṁ bravīmi sāraṁ bravīmyupaniṣaddhr̥dayaṁ bravīmi .
I speak the truth; I speak what is good for the world to come; I speak the essence, the heart of the Upanishads:
saṁsāramulbaṇamasāramavāpya jantoḥ sāro'yamīśvarapadāmburuhasya sevā .
in this harsh and empty world, the one thing of worth for any being is service at Ishwar's lotus feet.
ye nārcayanti giriśaṁ samaye pradoṣe ye nārcitaṁ śivamapi praṇamanti cānye .
Those who offer no puja to Girisha at the hour of pradosh, and those who will not even bow to Shiva when others offer it,
etatkathāṁ śrutipuṭairna pibanti mūḍhāste janmajanmasu bhavanti narā daridrāḥ .
and the foolish who will not drink in this story with their ears — they are poor, birth after birth.
ye vai pradoṣasamaye parameśvarasya kurvantyananyamanaso'ṅghrisarojapūjām .
Those who, with a mind on nothing else, offer puja at Parameshwar's lotus feet at the hour of pradosh
nityaṁ pravr̥ddhadhanadhānyakalatraputrasaubhāgyasampadadhikāsta ihaiva loke .
grow, in this very life, in wealth and grain, in wife and children, in good fortune and plenty.
kailāsaśailabhavane trijagajjanitrīṁ gaurīṁ niveśya kanakāñcitaratnapīṭhe .
In his home on Mount Kailasa he seats Gauri, mother of the three worlds, on a throne of gold and jewels,
nr̥tyaṁ vidhātumabhivāñchati śūlapāṇau devāḥ pradoṣasamaye'nubhajanti sarve .
and when the one who holds the trident wishes to dance at the hour of pradosh, all the Devas gather to serve him.
vāgdevī dhr̥tavallakī śatamakho veṇuṁ dadhatpadmajastālonnidrakaro ramā bhagavatī geyaprayogānvitā .
Saraswati Maa holds the veena, Indra the flute, Brahma ji keeps the tala, and Lakshmi Maa leads the song;
viṣṇuḥ sāndramr̥daṅgavādanapaṭurdevāḥ samantātsthitāḥ sevante tamanu pradoṣasamaye devaṁ mr̥ḍānīpatim .
Vishnu ji plays the deep mridangam, and the Devas stand all round — so at the hour of pradosh they all serve Mridani's husband.
gandharvayakṣapatagoragasiddhasādhyā vidyādharāmaravarāpsarasāṁ gaṇāṁśca .
Gandharvas, Yakshas, birds, serpents, Siddhas and Sadhyas, Vidyadharas, Devas and the bands of apsaras,
ye'nye trilokanilayāḥ sahabhūtavargāḥ prāpte pradoṣasamaye harapārśvasaṁsthāḥ .
and all who live in the three worlds, the bhutas with them — when the hour of pradosh comes, all stand at Hara's side.
ataḥ pradoṣe śiva eka eva pūjyo'tha nānye haripadmajādyāḥ .
So at pradosh Shiva alone is to be offered puja, and not the others — Hari, Brahma and the rest;
tasminmaheśe vidhinejyamāne sarve prasīdanti surādhināthāḥ .
for when Mahesh is offered puja in the right way, every chief of the Devas is pleased.
eṣa te tanayaḥ pūrvajanmani brāhmaṇottamaḥ .
"This son of yours was, in his last birth, a fine brahmin;
pratigrahairvayo ninye na dānādyaiḥ sukarmabhiḥ .
he spent his life taking gifts, not in giving or in good deeds.
ato dāridryamāpannaḥ putraste dvijabhāmini .
That is why your son has fallen into poverty, O wife of a brahmin;
taddoṣaparihārārthaṁ śaraṇaṁ yātu śaṅkaram .
to undo that fault, let him go to Shankar for refuge."
