પહલે સાઈં કે ચરણોં મેં, અપના શીશ નવાઊઁ મૈં।
કૈસે શિર્ડી સાઈં આએ, સારા હાલ સુનાઊઁ મૈં॥

First I bow my head at the feet of Sai, and then I narrate the entire account of how Sai arrived in Shirdi.

કૌન હૈં માતા, પિતા કૌન હૈં, યહ ન કિસી ને ભી જાના।
કહાઁ જનમ સાઈં ને ધારા, પ્રશ્ન પહેલી રહા બના॥

No one ever came to know who his mother and father were, and where Sai took birth remains an unsolved riddle.

કોઈ કહે અયોધ્યા કે યે, રામચંદ્ર ભગવાન હૈં।
કોઈ કહતા સાઈં બાબા, પવન પુત્ર હનુમાન હૈં॥

Some say he is Ram ji of Ayodhya, while others say Sai Baba is Hanuman, the son of the wind.

કોઈ કહતા મંગલ મૂર્તિ, શ્રી ગજાનન હૈં સાઈં।
કોઈ કહતા ગોકુલ મોહન, દેવકી નંદન હૈં સાઈં॥

Some say Sai is the auspicious Ganesh ji, while others say Sai is the charmer of Gokul and son of Devaki, Krishna ji.

શંકર સમઝ ભક્ત કઈ તો, બાબા કો ભજતે રહતે।
કોઈ કહ અવતાર દત્ત કા, પૂજા સાઈં કી કરતે॥

Many who keep him offer puja to Baba regarding him as Shiv ji, while others offer puja to Sai as an incarnation of Dattatreya.

કુછ ભી માનો ઉનકો તુમ, પર સાઈં હૈં સચ્ચે ભગવાન।
બડે દયાલુ દીનબંધુ, કિતનોં કો દિયા જીવન દાન॥

Whatever you may consider him to be, Sai is truly God, an immensely compassionate friend of the humble who granted the gift of life to many.

કઈ વર્ષ પહલે કી ઘટના, તુમ્હેં સુનાઊંગા મૈં બાત।
કિસી ભાગ્યશાલી કી, શિર્ડી મેં આઈ થી બારાત॥

I shall tell you of an event from many years ago, when a fortunate person's wedding procession arrived in Shirdi.

આયા સાથ ઉસી કે થા, બાલક એક બહુત સુન્દર।
આયા, આકર વહીં બસ ગયા, પાવન શિર્ડી કિયા નગર॥

Accompanying that procession was an exceedingly handsome youth, who arrived, settled there permanently, and sanctified the town of Shirdi.

કઈ દિનોં તક રહા ભટકતા, ભિક્ષા માંગી ઉસને દર-દર।
ઔર દિખાઈ ઐસી લીલા, જગ મેં જો હો ગઈ અમર॥

For many days he wandered begging alms from door to door, displaying divine deeds that became immortal in the world.

જૈસે-જૈસે ઉમર બઢી, વૈસે હી બઢતી ગઈ શાન।
ઘર-ઘર હોને લગા નગર મેં, સાઈં બાબા કા ગુણગાન॥

As his years advanced, his glory grew accordingly, and songs of Sai Baba's praise began to resound in every home throughout the town.

દિગ્-દિગન્ત મેં લગા ગૂંજને, ફિર તો સાઈંજી કા નામ।
દીન-દુખી કી રક્ષા કરના, યહી રહા બાબા કા કામ॥

Soon the name of Sai Baba echoed in every direction of the horizon, and protecting the poor and distressed remained Baba's lifelong duty.

બાબા કે ચરણોં મેં જાકર, જો કહતા મૈં હૂં નિર્ધન।
દયા ઉસી પર હોતી ઉનકી, ખુલ જાતે દુ:ખ કે બંધન॥

Whoever went to Baba's feet pleading poverty received his grace, and the shackles of their sorrow were dissolved.

કભી કિસી ને માંગી ભિક્ષા, દો બાબા મુઝકો સંતાન।
એવમસ્તુ તબ કહકર સાઈં, દેતે થે ઉસકો વરદાન॥

Whenever anyone begged him for the blessing of a child, Sai would say "So be it" and grant them that boon.

સ્વયં દુખી બાબા હો જાતે, દીન-દુખી જન કા લખ હાલ।
અંત:કરણ શ્રી સાઈં કા, સાગર જૈસા રહા વિશાલ॥

Baba would himself become sorrowful on beholding the misery of the distressed, for Sai's inner heart was as vast as the ocean.

ભક્ત એક મદ્રાસી આયા, ઘર કા બહુત બડા ધનવાન।
માલ ખજાના બેહદ ઉસકા, કેવલ નહીં રહી સંતાન॥

A man from Madras arrived who was immensely wealthy, possessing boundless treasures but lacking an heir.

લગા મનાને સાઈં નાથ કો, બાબા મુઝ પર દયા કરો।
ઝંઝા સે ઝંકૃત નૈયા કો, તુમ હી મેરી પાર કરો॥

He began imploring Sainath to have mercy on him and steer his storm-tossed boat safely across the waters.

કુલદીપક કે બિના અંધેરા, છાયા હુઆ હૈ ઘર મેં મેરે।
ઇસલિએ આયા હૂં બાબા, હોકર શરણાગત તેરે॥

He prayed that darkness reigned over his home without a lineage diya, which is why he had come to surrender at Baba's feet.

કુલદીપક કે અભાવ મેં, વ્યર્થ હૈ દૌલત કી માયા।
આજ ભિખારી બન કર બાબા, શરણ તુમ્હારી મૈં આયા॥

Without an heir to continue the lineage, all material wealth is useless, so he approached Baba as a beggar seeking refuge.

19

દે દો મુઝકો પુત્ર દાન, મૈં ઋણી રહૂંગા જીવન ભર।
ઔર કિસી કી આસ ન મુઝકો, સિર્ફ ભરોસા હૈ તુમ પર॥

He begged Baba for the gift of a son and promised lifelong gratitude, placing all his faith and reliance solely in him.

20

અનુનય-વિનય બહુત કી ઉસને, ચરણોં મેં ધર કે શીશ।
તબ પ્રસન્ન હોકર બાબા ને, દિયા ભક્ત કો યહ આશીષ॥

He pleaded profusely with his head placed at Baba's feet, whereupon Baba was pleased and bestowed his blessing upon the man.

'અલ્લા ભલા કરેગા તેરા' પુત્ર જન્મ હો તેરે ઘર।
કૃપા રહેગી તુઝ પર ઉસકી, ઔર તેરે ઉસ બાલક પર॥

Proclaiming "Allah will bless you," Baba decreed that a son would be born in his home and divine favour would protect both father and child.

અબ તક નહીં કિસી ને પાયા, સાઈં કી કૃપા કા પાર।
પુત્ર રત્ન દે મદ્રાસી કો, ધન્ય કિયા ઉસકા સંસાર॥

No one has ever found the outer limits of Sai's grace, for he blessed him with a jewel of a son and enriched his world.

તન-મન સે જો ભજે ઉસી કા, જગ મેં હોતા હૈ ઉદ્ધાર।
સાંચ કો આંચ નહીં હૈ કોઈ, સદા ઝૂઠ કી હોતી હાર॥

Whoever offers puja to him with body and mind achieves liberation in this world, for truth faces no trial and falsehood always suffers defeat.

24

મૈં હૂં સદા સહારે ઉસકે, સદા રહૂંગા ઉસકા દાસ।
સાઈં જૈસા પ્રભુ મિલા હૈ, ઇતની હી કમ હૈ ક્યા આસ॥

I always rely on his support and will forever remain his servant, for having found one like Sai, no greater aspiration is needed.

25

મેરા ભી દિન થા ઇક ઐસા, મિલતી નહીં મુઝે થી રોટી।
તન પર કપડા દૂર રહા થા, શેષ રહી નન્હીં સી લંગોટી॥

There was once a time in my life when I could not even obtain bread, fine clothes were out of reach, and only a small loincloth remained.

સરિતા સન્મુખ હોને પર ભી, મૈં પ્યાસા કા પ્યાસા થા।
દુર્દિન મેરા મેરે ઊપર, દાવાગ્નિ બરસાતા થા॥

Even with a river flowing right before me, I remained thoroughly thirsty, while my days of misfortune rained wild fire upon me.

27

ધરતી કે અતિરિક્ત જગત મેં, મેરા કુછ અવલંબન ન થા।
બના ભિખારી મૈં દુનિયા મેં, દર-દર ઠોકર ખાતા થા॥

Apart from the bare earth, I had no support whatsoever in this world, wandering as a beggar and stumbling from door to door.

28

ઐસે મેં ઇક મિત્ર મિલા જો, પરમ ભક્ત સાઈં કા થા।
જંજાલોં સે મુક્ત મગર, જગતી મેં વહ ભી મુઝસા થા॥

In that plight, I met a friend who was a close follower of Sai, free from worldly entanglements yet living in the world like me.

29

બાબા કે દર્શન કી ખાતિર, મિલ દોનોં ને કિયા વિચાર।
સાઈં જૈસે દયા મૂર્તિ કે, દર્શન કો હો ગએ તૈયાર॥

Together we discussed going for Baba's darshan, and prepared to visit that supreme embodiment of compassion.

30

પાવન શિર્ડી નગર મેં જાકર, દેખ મતવાલી મૂરતિ।
ધન્ય જન્મ હો ગયા કિ હમને, જબ દેખી સાઈં કી સૂરતિ॥

Reaching the sacred town of Shirdi and gazing upon his enchanting murti, our lives were sanctified the moment we beheld Sai's countenance.

31

જબ સે કિએ હૈં દર્શન હમને, દુ:ખ સારા કાફૂર હો ગયા।
સંકટ સારે મિટે ઔર, વિપદાઓં કા અંત હો ગયા॥

Ever since we beheld him, all our sorrow vanished completely, every trouble was erased, and all afflictions came to an end.

32

માન ઔર સમ્માન મિલા, ભિક્ષા મેં હમકો બાબા સે।
પ્રતિબિમ્બિત હો ઉઠે જગત મેં, હમ સાઈં કી આભા સે॥

We received honour and self-respect as alms from Baba, and we began to shine in the world through the reflection of Sai's divine radiance.

33

બાબા ને સમ્માન દિયા હૈ, માન દિયા ઇસ જીવન મેં।
ઇસકા હી સમ્બલ લે મૈં, હંસતા જાઊઁગા જીવન મેં॥

Baba gave me dignity and worth in this life, and drawing support from this alone, I shall journey through life with a smile.

34

સાઈં કી લીલા કા મેરે, મન પર ઐસા અસર હુઆ।
લગતા જગતી કે કણ-કણ મેં, જૈસે હો વહ ભરા હુઆ॥

Sai's leela has so touched my mind that he seems to fill every particle of the world.

35

કાશીરામ ભક્ત બાબા કા, ઇસ શિર્ડી મેં રહતા થા।
મૈં સાઈં કા, સાઈં મેરા, વહ દુનિયા સે કહતા થા॥

A man named Kashiram lived in Shirdi, who declared openly to the whole world, "I belong to Sai, and Sai belongs to me".

36

સીંકર સ્વયં વસ્ત્ર બેચતા, ગ્રામ-નગર બાજારોં મેં।
ઝંકૃત ઉસકી હૃદય તંત્રી થી, સાઈં કી ઝંકારોં સે॥

He stitched and sold garments himself across village and town markets, while the strings of his heart vibrated with the melody of Sai.

37

સ્તબ્ધ નિશા થી, થે સોયે, રજની અંચલ મેં ચાઁદ સિતારે।
નહીં સૂઝતા રહા હાથ કો, હાથ તિમિર કે મારે॥

It was a quiet night where the moon and stars lay asleep in night's lap, and one could not even see one's own hand through the dense darkness.

38

વસ્ત્ર બેચકર લૌટ રહા થા, હાય! હાટ સે કાશી।
વિચિત્ર બડા સંયોગ કિ ઉસ દિન, આતા થા એકાકી॥

Alas, Kashiram was returning home from the market after selling clothes, and by strange coincidence he was traveling all alone that day.

39

ઘેર રાહ મેં ખડે હો ગએ, ઉસે કુટિલ અન્યાયી।
મારો કાટો લૂટો ઇસકી હી, ધ્વનિ પડી સુનાઈ॥

Cruel and wicked bandits intercepted his path, shouting violent threats to strike, kill, and rob him.

40

લૂટ-પીટકર ઉસે વહાં સે, કુટિલ ગએ ચંપત હો।
આઘાતોં મેં મર્માહત હો, ઉસને દી સંજ્ઞા ખો॥

Having beaten and plundered him, the scoundrels fled the spot, while Kashiram collapsed and lost consciousness from his severe wounds.

41

બહુત દેર તક પડા રહા વહ, વહીં ઉસી હાલત મેં।
જાને કબ કુછ હોશ હો ઉઠા, ઉસકો કિસી પલક મેં॥

He lay abandoned in that condition for a long time, until consciousness faintly returned to him in a passing moment.

42

અનજાને હી ઉસકે મુંહ સે, નિકલ પડા થા સાઈં।
જિસકી પ્રતિધ્વનિ શિર્ડી મેં, બાબા કો પડી સુનાઈ॥

Spontaneously, the name "Sai" broke from his lips, and its distant echo reached Baba's ears in Shirdi.

43

ક્ષુબ્ધ હો ઉઠા માનસ ઉનકા, બાબા ગએ વિકલ હો।
લગતા જૈસે ઘટના સારી, ઘટી ઉન્હીં કે સન્મુખ હો॥

Baba's mind became turbulent and he grew restless with distress, as though the entire tragedy was unfolding directly before his eyes.

44

ઉન્માદી સે ઇધર-ઉધર તબ, બાબા લગે ભટકને।
સમ્મુખ ચીજેં જો ભી આઈં, ઉનકો લગે પટકને॥

Baba then began pacing frantically back and forth like one possessed, hurling to the ground whatever objects came before him.

45

ઔર ધધકતે અંગારોં મેં, બાબા ને અપના કર ડાલા।
હુએ સશંકિત સભી વહાઁ, દેખ તાંડવ નૃત્ય નિરાલા॥

And Baba thrust his own hand into the blazing coals; everyone there was alarmed to see that strange, fierce dance.

46

સમઝ ગએ સબ લોગ કિ કોઈ, ભક્ત પડા સંકટ મેં।
ક્ષુભિત ખડે થે સભી વહાઁ પર, પડે હુએ વિસ્મય મેં॥

Everyone understood that some bhakt had fallen into danger; they all stood there shaken, lost in wonder.

47

ઉસે બચાને કી હી ખાતિર, બાબા આજ વિકલ હૈં।
ઉસકી હી પીડા સે પીડિત, ઉનકા અંતઃસ્થલ હૈ॥

It was to save him that Baba was so restless that day; his innermost heart was suffering that bhakt's pain.

48

ઇતને મેં હી વિધિ ને અપની, વિચિત્રતા દિખલાઈ।
લખ કર જિસકો જનતા કી, શ્રદ્ધા સરિતા લહરાઈ॥

Just then fate showed its wonder, and seeing it the people's faith rose like a river in flood.

49

લેકર સંજ્ઞાહીન ભક્ત કો, ગાડી એક વહાઁ આઈ।
સન્મુખ અપને દેખ ભક્ત કો, સાઈં કી આંખેં ભર આઈ॥

A cart arrived there carrying the unconscious bhakt; seeing him before him, Sai's eyes filled with tears.

50

શાંત, ધીર, ગંભીર, સિંધુ સા, બાબા કા અંતઃસ્થલ।
આજ ન જાને ક્યોં રહ-રહકર, હો જાતા થા ચંચલ॥

Baba's heart, calm, steady and deep as the ocean, was that day somehow stirred again and again.

51

આજ દયા કી મૂર્તિ સ્વયં થા, બના હુઆ ઉપચારી।
ઔર ભક્ત કે લિએ આજ થા, દેવ બના પ્રતિહારી॥

That day compassion itself had become the healer, and for the sake of his bhakt the divine had become his guard.

52

આજ ભક્તિ કી વિષમ પરીક્ષા મેં, સફલ હુઆ થા કાશી।
ઉસકે હી દર્શન કી ખાતિર, ઉમડે થે નગર-નિવાસી॥

That day Kashi had passed the hard test of bhakti, and the townspeople crowded in just to see him.

53

જબ ભી ઔર જહાઁ ભી કોઈ, ભક્ત પડે સંકટ મેં।
ઉસકી રક્ષા કરને બાબા, આતે હૈં પલ ભર મેં॥

Whenever and wherever a bhakt falls into trouble, Baba comes in a moment to protect him.

54

યુગ-યુગ કા હૈ સત્ય યહી, નહીં કોઈ નઈ કહાની।
આપદ્ગ્રસ્ત ભક્ત જબ હોતા, જાતે ખુદ અંતર્યામી॥

This is the truth of every age, no new story: when a bhakt is in distress, the one who knows every heart goes to him himself.

55

ભેદ-ભાવ સે પરે પુજારી, માનવતા કે થે સાઈં।
જિતને પ્યારે હિન્દૂ-મુસ્લિમ, ઉતને હી થે સિક્ખ-ઈસાઈ॥

Sai was a worshipper of humanity, beyond all division; Sikhs and Christians were as dear to him as Hindus and Muslims.

56

ભેદ-ભાવ, મંદિર-મસ્જિદ કા, તોડ-ફોડ બાબા ને ડાલા।
રામ રહીમ સભી ઉનકે થે, કૃષ્ણ, કરીમ અલ્લાતાલા॥

Baba broke down the walls between mandir and masjid; Ram and Rahim were all his, Krishna, Karim and Allah alike.

57

ઘંટે કી પ્રતિધ્વનિ સે ગૂંજા, મસ્જિદ કા કોના-કોના।
મિલે પરસ્પર હિન્દૂ-મુસ્લિમ, પ્યાર બઢા દિન-દિન દૂના॥

Every corner of the masjid rang with the echo of the temple bell; Hindus and Muslims came together, and their love grew twofold each day.

58

ચમત્કાર થા કિતના સુંદર, પરિચય ઇસ કાયા ને દી।
ઔર નીમ કી કડવાહટ મેં ભી, મિઠાસ બાબા ને ભર દી॥

How beautiful the miracle that body showed: Baba filled even the bitterness of the neem with sweetness.

59

સબ કો સ્નેહ દિયા સાઈં ને, સબકો સંતુલ પ્યાર કિયા।
જો કુછ જિસને ભી ચાહા, બાબા ને ઉસકો વહી દિયા॥

Sai gave affection to all and loved everyone equally; whatever anyone wanted, Baba gave them just that.

60

ઐસે સ્નેહ શીલ ભાજન કા, નામ સદા જો જપા કરે।
પર્વત જૈસા દુઃખ ક્યોં ન હો, પલભર મેં વહ દૂર કરે॥

Whoever keeps repeating the name of one so full of love and goodness, even a sorrow as big as a mountain, he removes in a moment.

61

સાઈં જૈસા દાતા હમને, અરે! નહીં દેખા કોઈ।
જિસકે કેવલ દર્શન સે હી, સારી વિપદા દૂર ગઈ॥

We have never seen a giver like Sai, whose darshan alone sends every trouble away.

62

તન મેં સાઈં, મન મેં સાઈં, સાઈં-સાઈં ભજા કરો।
અપને તન કી સુધિ-બુધિ ખોકર, સુધિ ઉસકી તુમ કિયા કરો॥

Sai in the body, Sai in the mind — keep singing "Sai, Sai"; forget yourself and keep your thoughts on him.

63

જબ તૂ અપની સુધિ તજ, બાબા કી સુધિ કિયા કરેગા।
ઔર રાત-દિન બાબા, બાબા, બાબા હી તૂ રટા કરેગા॥

When you let go of thinking of yourself and think only of Baba, and day and night say nothing but "Baba, Baba, Baba",

64

તો બાબા કો અરે! વિવશ હો, સુધિ તેરી લેની હી હોગી।
તેરી હર ઇચ્છા બાબા કો, પૂરી હી કરની હોગી॥

then Baba will have no choice but to look after you; he will have to fulfil your every wish.

65

જંગલ-જંગલ ભટક ન પાગલ, ઔર ઢૂંઢને બાબા કો।
એક જગહ કેવલ શિર્ડી મેં, તૂ પાયેગા બાબા કો॥

Don't wander from forest to forest searching for Baba; in one place alone, in Shirdi, you will find him.

66

ધન્ય જગત મેં પ્રાણી હૈ વહ, જિસને બાબા કો પાયા।
દુઃખ મેં, સુખ મેં પ્રહર આઠ હો, સાઈં કા હી ગુણ ગાયા॥

Blessed in this world is the one who has found Baba, who in sorrow and in joy, all day and night, sings only Sai's praise.

67

ગિરેં સંકટોં કે પર્વત, ચાહે બિજલી હી ટૂટ પડે।
સાઈં કા લે નામ સદા તુમ, સન્મુખ સબ કે રહો અડે॥

Even if mountains of trouble fall and lightning strikes, always take Sai's name and stand firm before them all.

68

ઇસ બૂઢે કી સુન કરામાત, તુમ હો જાઓગે હૈરાન।
દંગ રહ ગયે સુન કર જિસકો, જાને કિતને ચતુર સુજાન॥

Hear the wonder this old man worked and you will be amazed; who knows how many clever, learned people were astonished to hear it.

69

એક બાર શિર્ડી મેં સાધુ, ઢોંગી થા કોઈ આયા।
ભોલી-ભાલી નગર-નિવાસી, જનતા કો થા ભરમાયા॥

Once a fraud dressed as a sadhu came to Shirdi and deceived the simple townspeople.

70

જડી-બૂટિયાઁ ઉન્હેં દિખા કર, કરને લગા વહાઁ ભાષણ।
કહને લગા સુનો શ્રોતાગણ, ઘર મેરા હૈ વૃન્દાવન॥

Showing them his herbs, he began to make a speech there: "Listen, all of you — my home is Vrindavan."

ઔષધિ મેરે પાસ એક હૈ, ઔર અજબ ઇસમેં શક્તિ।
ઇસકે સેવન કરને સે હી, હો જાતી હર દુઃખ સે મુક્તિ॥

"I have a medicine with a wondrous power; just by taking it you are freed from every pain.

72

અગર મુક્ત હોના ચાહો તુમ, સંકટ સે બીમારી સે।
તો હૈ મેરા નમ્ર નિવેદન, હર નર સે હર નારી સે॥

If you want to be free of trouble and illness, then this is my humble request to every man and every woman:

73

લો ખરીદ તુમ ઇસકો, ઇસકી સેવન વિધિયાઁ હૈં ન્યારી।
યદ્યપિ તુચ્છ વસ્તુ હૈ યહ, ગુણ ઇસકે હૈં અતિશય ભારી॥

buy it, and its ways of taking are special; though it looks a small thing, its virtues are very great.

74

જો હૈં સંતતિ હીન યહાઁ યદિ, મેરી ઔષધિ કો ખાયેં।
પુત્ર-રત્ન હો પ્રાપ્ત, અરે વહ મુંહ માંગા ફલ પાયેં॥

If anyone here without children takes my medicine, they will be blessed with a son and get whatever they ask for.

ઔષધિ મેરી જો ન ખરીદે, જીવન ભર પછતાયેગા।
મુઝ જૈસા પ્રાણી શાયદ હી, અરે યહાઁ આ પાયેગા॥

Whoever does not buy my medicine will regret it all their life; someone like me will hardly ever come here again.

દુનિયા દો દિન મેલા હૈ, મૌજ શૌક તુમ ભી કર લો।
અગર ઇસસે મિલતા હૈ સબ કુછ, તુમ ભી ઇસકો લે લો॥

The world is a two-day fair, so enjoy yourselves too; if this gives you everything, then you take it as well."

હૈરાની બઢતી જનતા કી, દેખ ઇસકી કારસ્તાની।
પ્રમુદિત વહ ભી મન હી મન થા, દેખ લોગોં કી નાદાની॥

The people grew ever more amazed at his tricks, and he was secretly pleased to see how gullible they were.

ખબર સુનાને બાબા કો યહ, ગયા દૌડકર સેવક એક।
સુનકર ભૃકુટી તની ઔર, વિસ્મરણ હો ગયા સભી વિવેક॥

A sevak ran to tell Baba the news; hearing it, Baba's brow knotted, and he was overcome with anger.

હુક્મ દિયા સેવક કો, સત્વર પકડ દુષ્ટ કો લાઓ।
યા શિર્ડી કી સીમા સે, કપટી કો દૂર ભગાઓ॥

મેરે રહતે ભોલી-ભાલી, શિર્ડી કી જનતા કો।
કૌન નીચ ઐસા જો, સાહસ કરતા હૈ છલને કો॥

Who is so low as to dare to cheat the simple people of Shirdi while I am here?

પલભર મેં ઐસે ઢોંગી, કપટી, નીચ, લુટેરે કો।
મહાનાશ કે મહાગર્ત મેં, પહુઁચા દૂઁ જીવન ભર કો॥

In a moment I could send such a fraud, cheat, scoundrel and thief into the pit of ruin for the rest of his life."

તનિક મિલા આભાસ મદારી, ક્રૂર, કુટિલ, અન્યાયી કો।
કાલ નાચતા હૈ અબ સિર પર, ગુસ્સા આયા સાઈં કો॥

The cruel, crooked trickster got a hint of it — that death now danced over his head, that Sai was angry.

પલભર મેં સબ ખેલ બંદ કર, ભાગા સિર પર રખકર પૈર।
સોચ રહા થા મન હી મન, ભગવાન નહીં હૈ ક્યા અબ ખૈર॥

In a moment he shut down his whole show and ran for his life, thinking to himself, "God, is there any escape for me now?"

સચ હૈ સાઈં જૈસા દાની, મિલ ન સકેગા જગ મેં।
અંશ ઈશ કા સાઈં બાબા, ઉન્હેં ન કુછ ભી મુશ્કિલ જગ મેં॥

It is true: a giver like Sai cannot be found in the world. Sai Baba is a part of God; nothing in the world is hard for him.

સ્નેહ, શીલ, સૌજન્ય આદિ કા, આભૂષણ ધારણ કર।
બઢતા ઇસ દુનિયા મેં જો ભી, માનવ-સેવા કે પથ પર॥

Whoever in this world wears the jewels of love, goodness and kindness, and walks the path of serving people,

વહી જીત લેતા હૈ જગતી કે, જન-જન કા અંતઃસ્થલ।
ઉસકી એક ઉદાસી હી જગ, કો કર દેતી હૈ વિહ્વલ॥

wins the heart of every person in the world; a single sorrow of his moves the whole world.

87

જબ-જબ જગ મેં ભાર પાપ કા, બઢતા હી જાતા હૈ।
ઉસે મિટાને કે હી ખાતિર, અવતારી હી આતા હૈ॥

Whenever the weight of sin keeps growing in the world, an avatar comes to wipe it away.

88

પાપ ઔર અન્યાય સભી કુછ, ઇસ જગતી કા હર કે।
દૂર ભગા દેતા દુનિયા કે, દાનવ કો ક્ષણ ભર મેં॥

Taking away all the sin and injustice of this world, he drives off the world's asura in an instant.

89

સ્નેહ સુધા કી ધાર બરસને, લગતી હૈ ઇસ દુનિયા મેં।
ગલે પરસ્પર મિલને લગતે, હૈં જન-જન આપસ મેં॥

A stream of loving nectar begins to rain on this world, and people begin to embrace one another.

90

ઐસે હી અવતારી સાઈં, મૃત્યુ લોક મેં આકર।
સમતા કા પાઠ પઢાયા, સબકા અપના આપ મિટાકર॥

So Sai came as an avatar into this mortal world and, setting aside every self, taught everyone the lesson of equality.

91

નામ દ્વારકા મસ્જિદ કા, રક્ખા શિર્ડી મેં સાઈં ને।
દાપ, તાપ, સંતાપ મિટાયા, જો કુછ આયા સાઈં ને॥

In Shirdi Sai named the masjid Dwarka, and whoever came to him, Sai took away their pride, heat and suffering.

સદા યાદ મેં મસ્ત રામ કી, બૈઠે રહતે થે સાઈં।
પહર આઠ હી રામ નામ કા, ભજતે રહતે થે સાઈં॥

Sai would sit absorbed in the remembrance of Ram; all day and night Sai kept repeating Ram's name.

સૂખી-રૂખી, તાજી-બાસી, ચાહે યા હોવે પકવાન।
સદા પ્યાર કે ભૂખે સાઈં કી, ખાતિર થે સભી સમાન॥

Dry or plain, fresh or stale, or a fine dish — to Sai, who hungered only for love, all were the same.

94

સ્નેહ ઔર શ્રદ્ધા સે અપની, જન જો કુછ દે જાતે થે।
બડે ચાવ સે ઉસ ભોજન કો, બાબા પાવન કરતે થે॥

Whatever people offered him with love and faith, Baba would eat with relish and make it holy.

કભી-કભી મન બહલાને કો, બાબા બાગ મેં જાતે થે।
પ્રમુદિત મન નિરખ પ્રકૃતિ, છટા કો વે હોતે થે॥

Sometimes Baba would go into the garden to refresh his mind, and his heart was glad watching the beauty of nature.

રંગ-બિરંગે પુષ્પ બાગ કે, મંદ-મંદ હિલ-ડુલ કરકે।
બીહડ વીરાને મન મેં ભી, સ્નેહ સલિલ ભર જાતે થે॥

The many-coloured flowers of the garden, swaying gently, filled even a barren, desolate heart with the water of love.

97

ઐસી સુમધુર બેલા મેં ભી, દુઃખ, આપદ, વિપદા કે મારે।
અપને મન કી વ્યથા સુનાને, જન રહતે બાબા કો ઘેરે॥

Even at such a sweet hour, people struck by sorrow, misfortune and trouble would crowd around Baba to tell him their pain.

98

સુનકર જિનકી કરુણા કથા કો, નયન કમલ ભર આતે થે।
દે વિભૂતિ હર વ્યથા, શાંતિ, ઉનકે ઉર મેં ભર દેતે થે॥

Hearing their sad stories his lotus eyes would fill with tears; giving them udi, he took away every pain and filled their hearts with peace.

જાને ક્યા અદ્ભુત શક્તિ, ઉસ વિભૂતિ મેં હોતી થી।
જો ધારણ કરતે મસ્તક પર, દુઃખ સારા હર લેતી થી॥

Who knows what wondrous power that udi held; for whoever put it on their forehead, it took away all their sorrow.

ધન્ય મનુજ વે સાક્ષાત્ દર્શન, જો બાબા સાઈં કે પાયે।
ધન્ય કમલ કર ઉનકે જિનસે, ચરણ-કમલ વે પરસાયે॥

Blessed are those who saw Sai Baba face to face; blessed are the hands that touched his lotus feet.

કાશ નિર્ભય તુમકો ભી, સાક્ષાત્ સાઈં મિલ જાતા।
વર્ષોં સે ઉજડા ચમન અપના, ફિર સે આજ ખિલ જાતા॥

If only, Nirbhay, you too could meet Sai face to face, your garden laid waste for years would bloom again today.

ગર પકડતા મૈં ચરણ શ્રી કે, નહીં છોડતા ઉમ્રભર।
મના લેતા મૈં જરૂર ઉનકો, ગર રૂઠતે સાઈં મુઝ પર॥

If I held his holy feet, I would not let go my whole life; and if Sai were ever displeased with me, I would surely win him round.
