Opening dohas

maatu lakshmee kari kripaa karo hriday men vaas. manokaamanaa siddh kar puravahu meree aas.

Mother Lakshmi, shower Your grace, make Your abode in my heart, fulfil all my desires, and satisfy my hopes.

sindhu sutaa vishnupriye nat shir baaranbaar. riddhi siddhi mangalaprade nat shir baaranbaar.

O daughter of the ocean, beloved consort of Vishnu ji and granter of prosperity, spiritual accomplishment, and auspiciousness, I bow my head before You again and again.

yahee mor aradaas, haath jod vinatee karoon. sab vidhi karau suvaas, jay janani jagadanbikaa.

This alone is my earnest prayer with folded hands: bless my dwelling with all manner of goodness and sanctity, victory to You, O Mother of the universe!

Chaupai

sindhu sutaa main sumiraun tohee. jnaan buddhi vidyaa do mohi.

I holds in dhyan You, O daughter of the ocean; please bestow upon me knowledge, intellect, and spiritual wisdom.

tum samaan nahin koee upakaaree. sab vidhi purabahu aas hamaaree.

There is no benefactor equal to You, so kindly fulfil my hopes and aspirations in every way.

jai jai jagat janani jagadambaa. sabake tumahee ho svalambaa.

All victory to You, Mother of creation and Jagadamba, who are the sole refuge and support of all living beings.

tum hee ho ghat ghat ke vaasee. vinatee yahee hamaaree khaasee.

You abide within every single heart, and this is my special supplication unto You.

jag jananee jay sindhu kumaaree. deenan kee tum ho hitakaaree.

Victory to the Mother of the world and maiden of the ocean, who always works for the welfare of the poor and humble.

vinavaun nity tumahin mahaaraanee. kripaa karau jag janani bhavaanee.

I pray unto You daily, O Supreme Queen and Cosmic Mother Bhavani, to bestow Your boundless mercy upon me.

kehi vidhi stuti karaun tihaaree. sudhi leejai aparaadh bisaaree.

How could I ever adequately sing Your praises; please forgive all my transgressions and take me under Your care.

kripaa drishti chitavo mam oree. jagat janani vinatee sun moree.

Turn Your compassionate gaze toward me, O Mother of the cosmos, and hear my heartfelt prayer.

jnaan buddhi jay sukh kee daataa. sankat haro hamaaree maataa.

You are the bestower of knowledge, wisdom, and joy; O Divine Mother, banish all our perils and suffering.

ksheer sindhu jab vishnu mathaayo. chaudah ratn sindhu men paayo.

When the ocean of milk was churned by Vishnu ji and the gods, fourteen precious gems emerged from its depths.

chaudah ratn men tum sukharaasee. sevaa kiyo prabhuhin bani daasee.

Among those fourteen treasures You appeared as the treasury of bliss, serving the supreme being as a devoted consort.

jab jab janm jahaan prabhu leenhaa. roop badal tahan sevaa keenhaa.

Whenever and wherever Vishnu ji took incarnation, You adapted Your divine form to serve Him there.

svayan vishnu jab nar tanu dhaaraa. leenheu avadhapuree avataaraa.

When Vishnu ji assumed human form and incarnated in the holy city of Ayodhya,

tab tum prakat janakapur maaheen. sevaa kiyo hriday pulakaaheen.

You manifested in Janakpur and served Him with a joyous and enraptured heart.

apanaayo tohi antaryaamee. vishv vidit tribhuvan kee svaamee.

Vishnu ji, who knows all and is master of the three worlds, embraced You as His eternal partner, a truth known throughout the cosmos.

tum sab prabal shakti nahin aanee. kahan tak mahimaa kahaun bakhaanee.

There is no divine power that matches Your immense potency; how far could I possibly recount or describe Your glory?

man kram vachan karai sevakaaee. man- ichchhit vaanchhit phal paaee.

Whoever serves You with purity in thought, deed, and speech attains the fulfillment of all their heartfelt desires.

taji chhal kapat aur chaturaaee. poojahin vividh bhaanti man laaee.

Abandoning deceit, pretense, and cunning, those who keep you offer puja to You with single-minded love in diverse ways.

aur haal main kahaun bujhaaee. jo yah paath kare man laaee.

Now I explain the merits obtained by anyone who recites this sacred Chalisa with focused devotion.

20

taako koee kasht n hoee. man ichchhit phal paavai phal soee.

No affliction or distress shall trouble that person, and they will receive the very fruits desired in their heart.

21

traahi- traahi jay duhkh nivaarinee. trividh taap bhav bandhan haarini.

Save and protect us, O dispeller of distress, who removes the three kinds of worldly afflictions and severs the bonds of mundane existence.

22

jo yah chaaleesaa parhe aur parhaave. ise dhyaan lagaakar sune sunaavai.

Whoever recites or teaches this Chalisa, or attentively listens to it and recites it to others,

taako koee n rog sataavai. putr aadi dhan sampatti paavai.

Will never be plagued by debilitating ailments and shall be blessed with progeny, prosperity, and wealth.

putr heen aur sampatti heenaa. andhaa badhir korhee ati deenaa.

Even if one is childless, impoverished, blind, deaf, diseased, or utterly wretched,

vipr bolaay kai paath karaavai. shankaa dil men kabhee n laavai.

If they invite a devout priest to recite this scripture without harboring any doubt in their heart,

paath karaavai din chaaleesaa. taa par kripaa karain gaureesaa.

And maintain this recitation for forty days, Shiv ji and Devi Gauri will shower their divine blessings upon them.

sukh sampatti bahut see paavai. kamee naheen kaahoo kee aavai.

That person attains abundant joy and affluence, never suffering from any lack in life.

28

baarah maas karai jo poojaa. tehi sam dhany aur nahin doojaa.

Whoever offers puja faithfully throughout all twelve months of the year is blessed beyond measure, with none equal to them in fortune.

pratidin paath karai man maaheen. un sam koee jag men naahin.

There is no one in this world comparable to the blessed soul who recites this prayer in their heart every day.

bahu vidhi kyaa main karaun baraaee. ley pareekshaa dhyaan lagaaee.

How much more can I praise its greatness; one can test and experience its power by in dhyan with dedication.

kari vishvaas karain vrat nemaa. hoy siddh upajai ur premaa.

By keeping firm faith and observing spiritual disciplines, all endeavors succeed and divine love wells up within the heart.

jay jay jay lakshmee mahaaraanee. sab men vyaapit jo gun khaanee.

Victory, all victory to Empress Lakshmi, the boundless mine of virtues who pervades every part of creation.

tumharo tej prabal jag maaheen. tum sam kou dayaal kahoon naaheen.

Your radiant splendour reigns supreme over all the worlds, and there is no one as merciful as You anywhere.

mohi anaath kee sudhi ab leejai. sankat kaati bhakti mohi deeje.

Please attend to this helpless orphan, eradicate all my afflictions, and grant me steadfast devotional surrender.

bhool chook karee kshamaa hamaaree. darshan deejai dashaa nihaaree.

Forgive all my errors and omissions, look upon my humble condition, and bless me with Your divine vision.

bin darashan vyaakul adhikaaree. tumahin akshat duhkh sahate bhaaree.

Without Your sight this true servant is distressed, suffering heavy sorrow despite Your perpetual presence.

nahin mohin jnaan buddhi hai tan men. sab jaanat ho apane man men.

I possess neither wisdom nor profound intellect within me, yet You know all things within Your omniscient heart.

roop chaturbhuj karake dhaaran. kasht mor ab karahu nivaaran.

Revealing Your divine four-armed form, please dispel and resolve all my hardships.

kahi prakaar main karaun baraaee. jnaan buddhi mohin nahin adhikaaee.

In what words could I ever extol Your majesty, when I have neither great knowledge nor intellect?

raamadaas ab kahaaee pukaaree. karo door tum vipati hamaaree.

Ramdas cries out and appeals unto You: please cast away all our calamities!

Closing doha

traahi traahi duhkh haarinee haro begi sab traas. jayati jayati jay lakshmee karo shatrun kaa naash.

Deliver us, O remover of sorrow, quickly banish all our dread and suffering; victory, victory to Devi Lakshmi, destroy all our internal and external enemies.

raamadaas dhari dhyaan nit vinay karat kar jor. maatu lakshmee daas par karahu dayaa kee kor.
