Prosperity, grace, the lit lamp

Opening dohas

1

mātu lakṣmī kari kr̥pā karo hr̥daya meṁ vāsa. manokāmanā siddha kara puravahu merī āsa.

Mother Lakshmi, shower Your grace, make Your abode in my heart, fulfil all my desires, and satisfy my hopes.

siṁdhu sutā viṣṇupriye nata śira bāraṁbāra. r̥ddhi siddhi maṁgalaprade nata śira bāraṁbāra.

O daughter of the ocean, beloved consort of Vishnu ji and granter of prosperity, spiritual accomplishment, and auspiciousness, I bow my head before You again and again.

yahī mora aradāsa, hātha joḍa vinatī karūṁ. saba vidhi karau suvāsa, jaya janani jagadaṁbikā.

This alone is my earnest prayer with folded hands: bless my dwelling with all manner of goodness and sanctity, victory to You, O Mother of the universe!

Chaupai

sindhu sutā maiṁ sumirauṁ tohī. jñāna buddhi vidyā do mohi.

I holds in dhyan You, O daughter of the ocean; please bestow upon me knowledge, intellect, and spiritual wisdom.

tuma samāna nahiṁ koī upakārī. saba vidhi purabahu āsa hamārī.

There is no benefactor equal to You, so kindly fulfil my hopes and aspirations in every way.

jai jai jagata janani jagadambā. sabake tumahī ho svalambā.

All victory to You, Mother of creation and Jagadamba, who are the sole refuge and support of all living beings.

tuma hī ho ghaṭa ghaṭa ke vāsī. vinatī yahī hamārī khāsī.

You abide within every single heart, and this is my special supplication unto You.

jaga jananī jaya sindhu kumārī. dīnana kī tuma ho hitakārī.

Victory to the Mother of the world and maiden of the ocean, who always works for the welfare of the poor and humble.

vinavauṁ nitya tumahiṁ mahārānī. kr̥pā karau jaga janani bhavānī.

I pray unto You daily, O Supreme Queen and Cosmic Mother Bhavani, to bestow Your boundless mercy upon me.

kehi vidhi stuti karauṁ tihārī. sudhi lījai aparādha bisārī.

How could I ever adequately sing Your praises; please forgive all my transgressions and take me under Your care.

kr̥pā dr̥ṣṭi citavo mama orī. jagata janani vinatī suna morī.

Turn Your compassionate gaze toward me, O Mother of the cosmos, and hear my heartfelt prayer.

jñāna buddhi jaya sukha kī dātā. saṁkaṭa haro hamārī mātā.

You are the bestower of knowledge, wisdom, and joy; O Divine Mother, banish all our perils and suffering.

kṣīra siṁdhu jaba viṣṇu mathāyo. caudaha ratna siṁdhu meṁ pāyo.

When the ocean of milk was churned by Vishnu ji and the gods, fourteen precious gems emerged from its depths.

caudaha ratna meṁ tuma sukharāsī. sevā kiyo prabhuhiṁ bani dāsī.

Among those fourteen treasures You appeared as the treasury of bliss, serving the supreme being as a devoted consort.

jaba jaba janma jahāṁ prabhu līnhā. rūpa badala tahaṁ sevā kīnhā.

Whenever and wherever Vishnu ji took incarnation, You adapted Your divine form to serve Him there.

svayaṁ viṣṇu jaba nara tanu dhārā. līnheu avadhapurī avatārā.

When Vishnu ji assumed human form and incarnated in the holy city of Ayodhya,

taba tuma prakaṭa janakapura māhīṁ. sevā kiyo hr̥daya pulakāhīṁ.

You manifested in Janakpur and served Him with a joyous and enraptured heart.

apanāyo tohi antaryāmī. viśva vidita tribhuvana kī svāmī.

Vishnu ji, who knows all and is master of the three worlds, embraced You as His eternal partner, a truth known throughout the cosmos.

tuma saba prabala śakti nahiṁ ānī. kahaṁ taka mahimā kahauṁ bakhānī.

There is no divine power that matches Your immense potency; how far could I possibly recount or describe Your glory?

17

mana krama vacana karai sevakāī. mana- icchita vāṁchita phala pāī.

Whoever serves You with purity in thought, deed, and speech attains the fulfillment of all their heartfelt desires.

taji chala kapaṭa aura caturāī. pūjahiṁ vividha bhāṁti mana lāī.

Abandoning deceit, pretense, and cunning, those who keep you offer puja to You with single-minded love in diverse ways.

aura hāla maiṁ kahauṁ bujhāī. jo yaha pāṭha kare mana lāī.

Now I explain the merits obtained by anyone who recites this sacred Chalisa with focused devotion.

20

tāko koī kaṣṭa na hoī. mana icchita phala pāvai phala soī.

No affliction or distress shall trouble that person, and they will receive the very fruits desired in their heart.

21

trāhi- trāhi jaya duḥkha nivāriṇī. trividha tāpa bhava baṁdhana hāriṇi.

Save and protect us, O dispeller of distress, who removes the three kinds of worldly afflictions and severs the bonds of mundane existence.

22

jo yaha cālīsā paṛhe aura paṛhāve. ise dhyāna lagākara sune sunāvai.

Whoever recites or teaches this Chalisa, or attentively listens to it and recites it to others,

23

tāko koī na roga satāvai. putra ādi dhana sampatti pāvai.

Will never be plagued by debilitating ailments and shall be blessed with progeny, prosperity, and wealth.

24

putra hīna aura sampatti hīnā. andhā badhira koṛhī ati dīnā.

Even if one is childless, impoverished, blind, deaf, diseased, or utterly wretched,

25

vipra bolāya kai pāṭha karāvai. śaṁkā dila meṁ kabhī na lāvai.

If they invite a devout priest to recite this scripture without harboring any doubt in their heart,

26

pāṭha karāvai dina cālīsā. tā para kr̥pā karaiṁ gaurīsā.

And maintain this recitation for forty days, Shiv ji and Devi Gauri will shower their divine blessings upon them.

27

sukha sampatti bahuta sī pāvai. kamī nahīṁ kāhū kī āvai.

That person attains abundant joy and affluence, never suffering from any lack in life.

28

bāraha māsa karai jo pūjā. tehi sama dhanya aura nahiṁ dūjā.

Whoever offers puja faithfully throughout all twelve months of the year is blessed beyond measure, with none equal to them in fortune.

29

pratidina pāṭha karai mana māhīṁ. una sama koī jaga meṁ nāhiṁ.

There is no one in this world comparable to the blessed soul who recites this prayer in their heart every day.

30

bahu vidhi kyā maiṁ karauṁ baṛāī. leya parīkṣā dhyāna lagāī.

How much more can I praise its greatness; one can test and experience its power by in dhyan with dedication.

kari viśvāsa karaiṁ vrata nemā. hoya siddha upajai ura premā.

By keeping firm faith and observing spiritual disciplines, all endeavors succeed and divine love wells up within the heart.

jaya jaya jaya lakṣmī mahārānī. saba meṁ vyāpita jo guṇa khānī.

Victory, all victory to Empress Lakshmi, the boundless mine of virtues who pervades every part of creation.

33

tumharo teja prabala jaga māhīṁ. tuma sama kou dayāla kahūṁ nāhīṁ.

Your radiant splendour reigns supreme over all the worlds, and there is no one as merciful as You anywhere.

34

mohi anātha kī sudhi aba lījai. saṁkaṭa kāṭi bhakti mohi dīje.

Please attend to this helpless orphan, eradicate all my afflictions, and grant me steadfast devotional surrender.

35

bhūla cūka karī kṣamā hamārī. darśana dījai daśā nihārī.

Forgive all my errors and omissions, look upon my humble condition, and bless me with Your divine vision.

36

bina daraśana vyākula adhikārī. tumahiṁ akṣata duḥkha sahate bhārī.

Without Your sight this true servant is distressed, suffering heavy sorrow despite Your perpetual presence.

37

nahiṁ mohiṁ jñāna buddhi hai tana meṁ. saba jānata ho apane mana meṁ.

I possess neither wisdom nor profound intellect within me, yet You know all things within Your omniscient heart.

38

rūpa caturbhuja karake dhāraṇa. kaṣṭa mora aba karahu nivāraṇa.

Revealing Your divine four-armed form, please dispel and resolve all my hardships.

39

kahi prakāra maiṁ karauṁ baṛāī. jñāna buddhi mohiṁ nahiṁ adhikāī.

In what words could I ever extol Your majesty, when I have neither great knowledge nor intellect?

40

rāmadāsa aba kahāī pukārī. karo dūra tuma vipati hamārī.

Ramdas cries out and appeals unto You: please cast away all our calamities!

Closing doha

trāhi trāhi duḥkha hāriṇī haro begi saba trāsa. jayati jayati jaya lakṣmī karo śatruna kā nāśa.

Deliver us, O remover of sorrow, quickly banish all our dread and suffering; victory, victory to Devi Lakshmi, destroy all our internal and external enemies.

rāmadāsa dhari dhyāna nita vinaya karata kara jora. mātu lakṣmī dāsa para karahu dayā kī kora.
