Opening dohas

1

śrīguru carana saroja raja, nija manu mukuru sudhāri.

With the dust of my guru's lotus feet I polish the mirror of my mind,

baranaum̐ raghubara bimala jasu, jo dāyaku phala cāri.

and tell the spotless glory of Raghuvara, giver of the four fruits of life.

buddhihīna tanu jānike, sumirauṁ pavana-kumāra.

Knowing this body to be without wisdom, I remember the son of the Wind;

bala budhi bidyā dehu mohiṁ, harahu kalesa bikāra.

give me strength, wisdom and knowledge; take away my troubles and flaws.

Chaupai

jaya hanumāna jñāna guna sāgara. jaya kapīsa tihum̐ loka ujāgara.

Hail Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue; hail the lord of monkeys, who lights the three worlds.

rāma dūta atulita bala dhāmā. aṁjani-putra pavanasuta nāmā.

Rama's messenger, abode of matchless strength; Anjani's son, called son of the Wind.

mahābīra bikrama bajaraṁgī. kumati nivāra sumati ke saṁgī.

Great hero, mighty, with limbs of thunderbolt; remover of bad thought, companion of good.

kaṁcana barana birāja subesā. kānana kuṁḍala kuṁcita kesā.

Golden of colour, handsomely dressed; earrings in your ears, curling hair.

hātha bajra au dhvajā birājai. kām̐dhe mūm̐ja janeū sājai.

In your hands the mace and the banner; on your shoulder the sacred thread of munja grass.

saṁkara suvana kesarīnaṁdana. teja pratāpa mahā jaga baṁdana.

Shankara's own, Kesari's delight; your radiance and might the whole world honours.

bidyāvāna gunī ati cātura. rāma kāja karibe ko ātura.

Learned, virtuous, most clever; eager to do Rama's work.

prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā. rāma lakhana sītā mana basiyā.

You delight in hearing Ram ji's deeds; Rama, Lakshmana and Sita dwell in your heart.

sūkṣma rūpa dhari siyahiṁ dikhāvā. bikaṭa rūpa dhari laṁka jarāvā.

In a tiny form you appeared to Sita; in a terrible form you burned Lanka.

bhīma rūpa dhari asura sam̐hāre. rāmacaṁdra ke kāja sam̐vāre.

In a giant form you slew the asuras and set Ramachandra's work right.

lāya sajīvana lakhana jiyāye. śrīraghubīra haraṣi ura lāye.

You brought the sanjivani and revived Lakshmana; Raghuvira, overjoyed, held you to his heart.

raghupati kīnhī bahuta baḍāī. tuma mama priya bharatahi sama bhāī.

The lord of the Raghus praised you greatly: you are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.

sahasa badana tumharo jasa gāvaiṁ. asa kahi śrīpati kaṁṭha lagāvaiṁ.

A thousand mouths sing your glory — so saying, the lord of Shri embraced you.

sanakādika brahmādi munīsā. nārada sārada sahita ahīsā.

Sanaka and the sages, Brahma and the gods, Narada, Sharada and the serpent king —

jama kubera digapāla jahām̐ te. kabi kobida kahi sake kahām̐ te.

Yama, Kubera, the guardians of the directions — where poets and scholars could not tell your glory.

tuma upakāra sugrīvahiṁ kīnhā. rāma milāya rāja pada dīnhā.

You did Sugriva a great service: you brought him to Rama and gave him his kingdom.

17

tumharo maṁtra bibhīṣana mānā. laṁkesvara bhae saba jaga jānā.

Vibhishana took your counsel and became lord of Lanka, as all the world knows.

18

juga sahasra jojana para bhānū. līlyo tāhi madhura phala jānū.

The Sun, thousands of ages of yojanas away — you swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.

prabhu mudrikā meli mukha māhīṁ. jaladhi lām̐ghi gaye acaraja nāhīṁ.

With Ram ji's ring in your mouth you leapt the ocean — no wonder at all.

20

durgama kāja jagata ke jete. sugama anugraha tumhare tete.

Every hard task in the world becomes easy by your grace.

21

rāma duāre tuma rakhavāre. hota na ājñā binu paisāre.

You are the keeper of Rama's door; none enters without your leave.

22

saba sukha lahai tumhārī saranā. tuma racchaka kāhū ko ḍara nā.

All happiness is found in your shelter; with you as protector, there is nothing to fear.

āpana teja samhāro āpai. tīnoṁ loka hām̐ka teṁ kām̐pai.

You alone can hold your own radiance; the three worlds tremble at your roar.

bhūta pisāca nikaṭa nahiṁ āvai. mahābīra jaba nāma sunāvai.

Ghosts and asuras do not come near when the great hero's name is spoken.

25

nāsai roga harai saba pīrā. japata niraṁtara hanumata bīrā.

Illness is destroyed, all pain removed, by constantly repeating brave Hanuman's name.

saṁkaṭa teṁ hanumāna chuḍāvai. mana krama bacana dhyāna jo lāvai.

Hanuman frees from trouble those who hold him in mind, deed and word.

27

saba para rāma tapasvī rājā. tina ke kāja sakala tuma sājā.

Rama the ascetic king is over all; and all his work you accomplished.

28

aura manoratha jo koī lāvai. soi amita jīvana phala pāvai.

Whoever brings another wish to you gains the limitless fruit of life.

29

cāroṁ juga paratāpa tumhārā. hai parasiddha jagata ujiyārā.

Through all four ages your glory has been known, lighting the world.

30

sādhu saṁta ke tuma rakhavāre. asura nikaṁdana rāma dulāre.

You are the guardian of the good and the saintly, destroyer of asuras, Rama's beloved.

31

aṣṭa siddhi nau nidhi ke dātā. asa bara dīna jānakī mātā.

Giver of the eight powers and nine treasures — so Mother Janaki blessed you.

32

rāma rasāyana tumhare pāsā. sadā raho raghupati ke dāsā.

You hold the elixir that is Rama; may you ever remain the servant of Raghupati.

33

tumhare bhajana rāma ko pāvai. janama janama ke dukha bisarāvai.

Through your worship one reaches Rama and forgets the sorrows of many births.

aṁta kāla raghubara pura jāī. jahām̐ janma hari-bhakta kahāī.

At the end one goes to Raghuvara's city, and wherever born is called one who keeps Hari.

aura devatā citta na dharaī. hanumata sei sarba sukha karaī.

No need to hold other gods in mind; serving Hanuman brings every happiness.

saṁkaṭa kaṭai miṭai saba pīrā. jo sumirai hanumata balabīrā.

Trouble is cut away, all pain erased, for one who remembers mighty Hanuman.

jaya jaya jaya hanumāna gosāīṁ. kr̥pā karahu gurudeva kī nāīṁ.

Hail, hail, hail Hanuman, lord; be gracious as a guru is.

jo sata bāra pāṭha kara koī. chūṭahi baṁdi mahā sukha hoī.

Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and finds great joy.

39

jo yaha paḍhai hanumāna cālīsā. hoya siddhi sākhī gaurīsā.

Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains fulfilment — Gauri's lord is witness.

tulasīdāsa sadā hari cerā. kījai nātha hr̥daya maham̐ ḍerā.

Tulsidas, ever Hari's servant, asks: Ram ji, make your home in my heart.

Closing doha

pavanatanaya saṁkaṭa harana, maṁgala mūrati rūpa.

Son of the Wind, remover of trouble, the very form of auspiciousness —

rāma lakhana sītā sahita, hr̥daya basahu sura bhūpa.

with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, dwell in my heart, king of gods.
