jaya jaya jaya jaga pāvanī, jayati devasari gaṁga.

Glory to you, O sanctifier of the world, and victory to you, O Ganga, the sacred river of the gods.

jaya śiva jaṭā nivāsinī, anupama tuṁga taraṁga.

Victory to you, O dweller among Shiva's locks, whose tall waves rise in beauty beyond compare.

jaya jaya jananī harānā aghakhānī, ānaṁda karanī gaṁgā mahārānī.

Hail the mother who destroys the very mine of sins Queen Ganga is the one who brings joy and gladness to all.

jaya bhagīrathī surasari mātā, kalimala mūla ḍālinī vikhyātā.

Victory to her who came down through the penance of Bhagirath, mother and river of the gods She is famed as the one who tears out the root of the impurities of this dark age.

jaya jaya jahānu sutā agha hanānī, bhīṣma kī mātā jagā jananī.

Praise to the daughter of sage Jahnu, the slayer of sin She who was mother to Bhishma is the mother of the whole world.

dhavala kamala dala mama tanu saje, lakhī śata śarada candra chavi lajāī.

Her form shines white like the petals of a lotus Seeing her radiance, a hundred autumn moons feel shy before her glow.

vahāṁ makara vimala śucī soheṁ, amiyā kalaśa kara lakhī mana moheṁ.

She rides her pure, shining crocodile mount The pot of nectar she holds in her hand enchants the mind.

jaditā ratnā kaṁcana ābhūṣaṇa, hiya maṇi hara, harānitama dūṣaṇa.

She is adorned with gold ornaments studded with precious gems The jeweled necklace on her heart dispels the darkness of all faults.

jaga pāvanī traya tāpa nāsavanī, tarala taraṁga tuṁga mana bhāvanī.

Purifier of the world, she destroys the three types of worldly suffering Her liquid, towering waves are pleasing to the mind.

jo gaṇapati ati pūjya pradhāna, ihūṁ te prathama gaṁgā asnānā.

Just as Ganesh ji is the most revered and given puja first among gods Similarly, bathing in the Ganga is given the foremost importance.

brahmā kamaṁḍala vāsinī devī, śrī prabhu pada paṁkaja sukha sevi.

O Devi who resides in the water-pot of Brahma ji You joyfully serve the lotus feet of the supreme being.

sāthī sahastra sāgara suta tarayo, gaṁgā sāgara tīratha dharayo.

You granted salvation to the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara Thus you established the holy pilgrimage site of Ganga Sagar.

agama taraṁga uṭhyo mana bhavana, lakhī tīratha haridvāra suhāvana.

Your unfathomable waves rise up, captivating the heart Seeing the beautiful pilgrimage site of Haridwar brings great delight.

tīratha rāja prayāga akṣaivetā, dharayo mātu puni kāśī karavata.

At Prayagraj, the king of pilgrimages, you flow by the immortal banyan tree Then, O Mother, you take a turn to flow through the sacred city of Kashi.

dhanī dhanī surasari svarga kī sīdhī, taranī amitā pitu paḍa pirahī.

Blessed, blessed is the divine river, which acts as a stairway to heaven You are the savior of countless generations of ancestors.

bhāgīrathī tāpa kiyo upārā, diyo brahmā tava surasari dhārā.

King Bhagirath performed immense and boundless penance Then Brahma ji released your divine stream.

jaba jaga jananī calyo haharāī, śambhu jāṭā mahaṁ rahyo samāī.

When the Mother of the World flowed down with a roaring sound She was absorbed and contained within the matted locks of Shiv ji.

varṣa paryaṁta gaṁga mahārānī, rahīṁ śambhū ke jaṭā bhulānī.

For a whole year, Queen Ganga remained there She wandered lost within Shiva's matted hair.

puni bhāgīrathī śaṁbhuhiṁ dhyāyo, taba ika būṁda jaṭā se pāyo.

Then Bhagirath meditated upon Shiv ji again Then he received just a single drop from those locks.

tāte mātu bhai traya dhārā, mr̥tyu loka, nābhā, aru pātārā.

From that, the Mother split into three streams Flowing to the mortal realm, the heavens, and the netherworld.

gaīṁ pātāla prabhāvatī nāmā, mandākinī gaī gagana lalāmā.

She went to the netherworld under the name Prabhavati As Mandakini, she became the beauty of the heavens.

mr̥tyu loka jāhnavī suhāvanī, kalimala haranī agama jaga pāvani.

In the mortal world, she is the beautiful Jahnavi She removes the sins of the Kali Yuga and is the unfathomable purifier of the world.

dhani maiyā taba mahimā bhārī, dharmaṁ dhurī kali kaluṣa kuṭhārī.

Blessed are you, O Mother, your glory is immense You are the axis of dharma and an axe to the sins of the Kali age.

mātu prabhavati dhani maṁdākinī, dhani sura sarita sakala bhayanāsinī.

Blessed is Mother Prabhavati, and blessed is Mandakini Blessed is the river of the gods, the destroyer of all fears.

pana karata nirmala gaṁgā jala, pāvata mana icchita anaṁta phala.

By drinking the pure water of the Ganga One obtains endless fruits desired by the mind.

purava janma puṇya jaba jāgata, tabahīṁ dhyāna gaṁgā mahaṁ lāgata.

When the merits of previous births awaken Only then does one's mind engage in the dhyan of Ganga.

jaī pagu surasarī hetu uṭhāvahī, taī jagi aśvamegha phala pāvahi.

For every step one takes towards the divine river One receives the reward of performing an Ashvamedha sacrifice.

mahā patita jina kahū na tāre, tina tāre ika nāma tihāre.

Those great sinners whom no one else could save They were liberated simply by your name.

śata yojana hūṁ se jo dhyāvahiṁ, niśacāī viṣṇu loka pada pāvahīṁ.

Even those who holds in dhyan you from a hundred yojanas away Will certainly attain a place in the realm of Vishnu ji.

nāma bhajata agaṇita agha nāśai, vimala jñāna bala buddhi prakāśe.

Reciting your name destroys countless sins It illuminates pure knowledge, strength, and intellect.

jimī dhana mūla dharmaṁ aru dānā, dharmaṁ mūla gaṁgājala pānā.

Just as wealth is the root of charity and religious duties Drinking Ganga water is the root of all dharma.

taba guna guṇana karata dukha bhājata, gr̥ha gr̥ha sampati sumati virājata.

By singing your praises, all sorrows flee away Wealth and good sense reside in every home.

gaṁgahi nema sahita nita dhyāvata, durjanahūṁ sajjana pada pāvata.

Whoever holds in dhyan Ganga daily with discipline Even a wicked person attains the status of a saint.

buddhihīna vidyā bala pāvai, rogī roga mukta hvai jāvai.

The unintelligent gain the power of knowledge The sick become completely free from disease.

gaṁgā gaṁgā jo nara kahahīṁ, bhūkhā naṁgā kabahūṁ na rahahīṁ.

The person who repeatedly recites the name of Ganga Will never remain hungry or destitute.

nikasata hī mukha gaṁgā māī, śravaṇa dābī yama calahiṁ parāī.

As soon as the words "Ganga Mai" leave one's mouth The agents of Yama cover their ears and run away.

mahaṁ aghina adhamana kahaṁ tāre, bhae narakā ke baṁda kivāreṁ.

jo nara japī gaṁga śata nāmā, sakala siddhi pūraṇa hvai kāmā.

dhani maiyā surasari sukha daini, dhani dhani tīratha rāja triveṇī.

Blessed is Mother Ganga, the giver of happiness Blessed, blessed is Triveni, the king of pilgrimage sites.

kakarā grāma r̥ṣi durvāsā, sundaradāsa gaṁgā kara dāsā.

jo yaha paḍhe gaṁgā cālīsā, milī bhakti avirala vāgīsā.

Whoever reads this Ganga Chalisa Will attain uninterrupted devotion and eloquence.

Closing dohas

nita nae sukha sampati lahaiṁ, dhareṁ gaṁgā kā dhyāna.

They will receive new happiness and wealth every day By fixing their mind in dhyan on Ganga.

aṁta samāī sura pura basala, sadara baiṭhī vimāna.

In the end, they will reside in the city of the gods Taking their seat respectfully in a celestial chariot.

saṁvata bhuta nabhdiśī, rāma janma dina caitra.

In the Samvat year represented by 'Bhut Nabh Dishi' On the birthday of Ram ji in the month of Chaitra.

pūraṇa cālīsā kiyā, harī bhaktana hita netra.
