Ganga Chalisa

जय जय जय जग पावनी, जयति देवसरि गंग।

Glory to you, O sanctifier of the world, and victory to you, O Ganga, the sacred river of the gods.

जय शिव जटा निवासिनी, अनुपम तुंग तरंग॥

Victory to you, O dweller among Shiva's locks, whose tall waves rise in beauty beyond compare.

जय जय जननी हराना अघखानी, आनंद करनी गंगा महारानी॥

Hail the mother who destroys the very mine of sins Queen Ganga is the one who brings joy and gladness to all.

जय भगीरथी सुरसरि माता, कलिमल मूल डालिनी विख्याता॥

Victory to her who came down through the penance of Bhagirath, mother and river of the gods She is famed as the one who tears out the root of the impurities of this dark age.

जय जय जहानु सुता अघ हनानी, भीष्म की माता जगा जननी॥

Praise to the daughter of sage Jahnu, the slayer of sin She who was mother to Bhishma is the mother of the whole world.

धवल कमल दल मम तनु सजे, लखी शत शरद चन्द्र छवि लजाई॥

Her form shines white like the petals of a lotus Seeing her radiance, a hundred autumn moons feel shy before her glow.

वहां मकर विमल शुची सोहें, अमिया कलश कर लखी मन मोहें॥

She rides her pure, shining crocodile mount The pot of nectar she holds in her hand enchants the mind.

जदिता रत्ना कंचन आभूषण, हिय मणि हर, हरानितम दूषण॥

She is adorned with gold ornaments studded with precious gems The jeweled necklace on her heart dispels the darkness of all faults.

जग पावनी त्रय ताप नासवनी, तरल तरंग तुंग मन भावनी॥

Purifier of the world, she destroys the three types of worldly suffering Her liquid, towering waves are pleasing to the mind.

जो गणपति अति पूज्य प्रधान, इहूं ते प्रथम गंगा अस्नाना॥

Just as Ganesh ji is the most revered and given puja first among gods Similarly, bathing in the Ganga is given the foremost importance.

ब्रह्मा कमंडल वासिनी देवी, श्री प्रभु पद पंकज सुख सेवि॥

O Devi who resides in the water-pot of Brahma ji You joyfully serve the lotus feet of the supreme being.

साथी सहस्त्र सागर सुत तरयो, गंगा सागर तीरथ धरयो॥

You granted salvation to the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara Thus you established the holy pilgrimage site of Ganga Sagar.

अगम तरंग उठ्यो मन भवन, लखी तीरथ हरिद्वार सुहावन॥

Your unfathomable waves rise up, captivating the heart Seeing the beautiful pilgrimage site of Haridwar brings great delight.

तीरथ राज प्रयाग अक्षैवेता, धरयो मातु पुनि काशी करवत॥

At Prayagraj, the king of pilgrimages, you flow by the immortal banyan tree Then, O Mother, you take a turn to flow through the sacred city of Kashi.

धनी धनी सुरसरि स्वर्ग की सीधी, तरनी अमिता पितु पड़ पिरही॥

Blessed, blessed is the divine river, which acts as a stairway to heaven You are the savior of countless generations of ancestors.

भागीरथी ताप कियो उपारा, दियो ब्रह्मा तव सुरसरि धारा॥

King Bhagirath performed immense and boundless penance Then Brahma ji released your divine stream.

जब जग जननी चल्यो हहराई, शम्भु जाटा महं रह्यो समाई॥

When the Mother of the World flowed down with a roaring sound She was absorbed and contained within the matted locks of Shiv ji.

वर्ष पर्यंत गंग महारानी, रहीं शम्भू के जटा भुलानी॥

For a whole year, Queen Ganga remained there She wandered lost within Shiva's matted hair.

पुनि भागीरथी शंभुहिं ध्यायो, तब इक बूंद जटा से पायो॥

Then Bhagirath meditated upon Shiv ji again Then he received just a single drop from those locks.

ताते मातु भइ त्रय धारा, मृत्यु लोक, नाभा, अरु पातारा॥

From that, the Mother split into three streams Flowing to the mortal realm, the heavens, and the netherworld.

गईं पाताल प्रभावती नामा, मन्दाकिनी गई गगन ललामा॥

She went to the netherworld under the name Prabhavati As Mandakini, she became the beauty of the heavens.

मृत्यु लोक जाह्नवी सुहावनी, कलिमल हरनी अगम जग पावनि॥

In the mortal world, she is the beautiful Jahnavi She removes the sins of the Kali Yuga and is the unfathomable purifier of the world.

धनि मइया तब महिमा भारी, धर्मं धुरी कलि कलुष कुठारी॥

Blessed are you, O Mother, your glory is immense You are the axis of dharma and an axe to the sins of the Kali age.

मातु प्रभवति धनि मंदाकिनी, धनि सुर सरित सकल भयनासिनी॥

Blessed is Mother Prabhavati, and blessed is Mandakini Blessed is the river of the gods, the destroyer of all fears.

पन करत निर्मल गंगा जल, पावत मन इच्छित अनंत फल॥

By drinking the pure water of the Ganga One obtains endless fruits desired by the mind.

पुरव जन्म पुण्य जब जागत, तबहीं ध्यान गंगा महं लागत॥

When the merits of previous births awaken Only then does one's mind engage in the dhyan of Ganga.

जई पगु सुरसरी हेतु उठावही, तई जगि अश्वमेघ फल पावहि॥

For every step one takes towards the divine river One receives the reward of performing an Ashvamedha sacrifice.

महा पतित जिन कहू न तारे, तिन तारे इक नाम तिहारे॥

Those great sinners whom no one else could save They were liberated simply by your name.

शत योजन हूं से जो ध्यावहिं, निशचाई विष्णु लोक पद पावहीं॥

Even those who holds in dhyan you from a hundred yojanas away Will certainly attain a place in the realm of Vishnu ji.

नाम भजत अगणित अघ नाशै, विमल ज्ञान बल बुद्धि प्रकाशे॥

Reciting your name destroys countless sins It illuminates pure knowledge, strength, and intellect.

जिमी धन मूल धर्मं अरु दाना, धर्मं मूल गंगाजल पाना॥

Just as wealth is the root of charity and religious duties Drinking Ganga water is the root of all dharma.

तब गुन गुणन करत दुख भाजत, गृह गृह सम्पति सुमति विराजत॥

By singing your praises, all sorrows flee away Wealth and good sense reside in every home.

गंगहि नेम सहित नित ध्यावत, दुर्जनहूं सज्जन पद पावत॥

Whoever holds in dhyan Ganga daily with discipline Even a wicked person attains the status of a saint.

बुद्धिहीन विद्या बल पावै, रोगी रोग मुक्त ह्वै जावै॥

The unintelligent gain the power of knowledge The sick become completely free from disease.

गंगा गंगा जो नर कहहीं, भूखा नंगा कबहूं न रहहीं॥

The person who repeatedly recites the name of Ganga Will never remain hungry or destitute.

निकसत ही मुख गंगा माई, श्रवण दाबी यम चलहिं पराई॥

As soon as the words "Ganga Mai" leave one's mouth The agents of Yama cover their ears and run away.

महं अघिन अधमन कहं तारे, भए नरका के बंद किवारें॥

You have saved the greatest of sinners and the most lowly For them, the doors of hell have been closed forever.

जो नर जपी गंग शत नामा, सकल सिद्धि पूरण ह्वै कामा॥

The person who recites the hundred names of Ganga Attains all perfections and has all desires fulfilled.

सब सुख भोग परम पद पावहीं, आवागमन रहित ह्वै जावहीं॥

Enjoying all worldly comforts, they eventually attain the supreme state They become free from the cycle of birth and death.

धनि मइया सुरसरि सुख दैनि, धनि धनि तीरथ राज त्रिवेणी॥

Blessed is Mother Ganga, the giver of happiness Blessed, blessed is Triveni, the king of pilgrimage sites.

ककरा ग्राम ऋषि दुर्वासा, सुन्दरदास गंगा कर दासा॥

In the village of Kakra, associated with Sage Durvasa Sundardas remains a humble servant of Ganga.

जो यह पढ़े गंगा चालीसा, मिली भक्ति अविरल वागीसा॥

Whoever reads this Ganga Chalisa Will attain uninterrupted devotion and eloquence.

नित नए सुख सम्पति लहैं, धरें गंगा का ध्यान।

They will receive new happiness and wealth every day By fixing their mind in dhyan on Ganga.

अंत समाई सुर पुर बसल, सदर बैठी विमान॥

In the end, they will reside in the city of the gods Taking their seat respectfully in a celestial chariot.
