ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
પુરા શુમ્ભનિશુમ્ભાભ્યામસુરાભ્યાં શચીપતેઃ ।
ત્રૈલોક્યં યજ્ઞભાગાશ્ચ હૃતા મદબલાશ્રયાત્॥
In former times, the great asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha, in the pride of their strength, deprived Indra of his sovereignty over the three worlds and his portions of the sacrifices.
તાવેવ સૂર્યતાં તદ્વદધિકારં તથૈન્દવમ્ ।
કૌબેરમથ યામ્યં ચ ચક્રાતે વરુણસ્ય ચ॥
They themselves took over the offices of the sun, the moon, Kubera, Yama, and Varuna.
તાવેવ પવનર્દ્ધિં ચ ચક્રતુર્વહ્નિકર્મ ચ ।
તતો દેવા વિનિર્ધૂતા ભ્રષ્ટરાજ્યાઃ પરાજિતાઃ॥
They themselves exercised Vayu's authority and Agni's duty. Thereupon the devas, defeated, deprived of their kingdoms and routed,
હૃતાધિકારાસ્ત્રિદશાસ્તાભ્યાં સર્વે નિરાકૃતાઃ ।
મહાસુરાભ્યાં તાં દેવીં સંસ્મરન્ત્યપરાજિતામ્॥
Were ousted from their offices by the two great asuras. All the devas, thus defeated, recalled the invincible Devi.
તયાસ્માકં વરો દત્તો યથાઽઽપત્સુ સ્મૃતાખિલાઃ ।
ભવતાં નાશયિષ્યામિ તત્ક્ષણાત્પરમાપદઃ॥
'She had granted us the boon: "Whenever in calamities you think of me, that very moment I will put an end to all your worst disasters."'
ઇતિ કૃત્વા મતિં દેવા હિમવન્તં નગેશ્વરમ્ ।
જગ્મુસ્તત્ર તતો દેવીં વિષ્ણુમાયાં પ્રતુષ્ટુવુઃ॥
Resolving thus, the devas went to Himavat, lord of the mountains, and there extolled the Devi, who is the illusive power of Vishnu.
દેવા ઊચુઃ॥
The devas said:
નમો દેવ્યૈ મહાદેવ્યૈ શિવાયૈ સતતં નમઃ ।
નમઃ પ્રકૃત્યૈ ભદ્રાયૈ નિયતાઃ પ્રણતાઃ સ્મ તામ્॥
Salutation to the Devi, to the great Devi, to Her who is kind, salutation for ever. Salutation to Prakriti, to the good one; we bow to Her with minds restrained.
રૌદ્રાયૈ નમો નિત્યાયૈ ગૌર્યૈ ધાત્ર્યૈ નમો નમઃ ।
જ્યોત્સ્નાયૈ ચેન્દુરૂપિણ્યૈ સુખાયૈ સતતં નમઃ॥
Salutation to Her who is terrible, to the eternal one, to Gauri, to the supporter of the universe, salutation again and again. Salutation to Her who is of the form of the moon's light, and to Her who is the form of happiness, salutation for ever.
કલ્યાણ્યૈ પ્રણતાં વૃદ્ધ્યૈ સિદ્ધ્યૈ કુર્મો નમો નમઃ ।
નૈર્ઋત્યૈ ભૂભૃતાં લક્ષ્મ્યૈ શર્વાણ્યૈ તે નમો નમઃ॥
We bow to Her who is welfare; we make salutations to Her who is prosperity and success. Salutation to the consort of Shiva, who is the good fortune of kings, and who is the destroyer of misfortune.
દુર્ગાયૈ દુર્ગપારાયૈ સારાયૈ સર્વકારિણ્યૈ ।
ખ્યાત્યૈ તથૈવ કૃષ્ણાયૈ ધૂમ્રાયૈ સતતં નમઃ॥
Salutations always to Durga, who takes one across difficulties, who is the essence, who is the author of everything; to the knowledge of the truth, and to the dark one, and to the smoke-coloured one.
અતિસૌમ્યાતિરૌદ્રાયૈ નતાસ્તસ્યૈ નમો નમઃ ।
નમો જગત્પ્રતિષ્ઠાયૈ દેવ્યૈ કૃત્યૈ નમો નમઃ॥
We prostrate before Her who is at once most gentle and most terrible; we salute Her again and again. Salutation to Her who is the support of the world. Salutation to the Devi who is of the form of volition.
યા દેવી સર્વભૂતેષુ વિષ્ણુમાયેતિ શબ્દિતા ।
નમસ્તસ્યૈ॥
To the Devi who in all beings is called Vishnumaya, salutation to Her.

ઇન્દ્રિયાણામધિષ્ઠાત્રી ભૂતાનાં ચાખિલેષુ યા ।
ભૂતેષુ સતતં તસ્યૈ વ્યાપ્ત્યૈ દેવ્યૈ નમો નમઃ॥
To the all-pervading Devi who constantly presides over the senses of all beings and governs all creation, salutations again and again.
ચિતિરૂપેણ યા કૃત્સ્નમેતદ્વ્યાપ્ય સ્થિતા જગત્ ।
નમસ્તસ્યૈ॥
To the Devi who pervades this entire world in the form of consciousness, salutations to Her.
નમસ્તસ્યૈ॥

નમસ્તસ્યૈ નમો નમઃ॥
Salutations to Her, salutations again and again.
સ્તુતા સુરૈઃ પૂર્વમભીષ્ટસંશ્રયા-
ત્તથા સુરેન્દ્રેણ દિનેષુ સેવિતા।
કરોતુ સા નઃ શુભહેતુરીશ્વરી
શુભાનિ ભદ્રાણ્યભિહન્તુ ચાપદઃ॥
'Invoked of yore by the devas for the sake of their desired object, and adored by the lord of the devas every day, may she, the Isvari, the source of all good, accomplish for us all good things and put an end to our calamities!'
યા સામ્પ્રતં ચોદ્ધતદૈત્યતાપિતૈ-
રસ્માભિરીશા ચ સુરૈર્નમસ્યતે।
યા ચ સ્મૃતા તત્ક્ષણમેવ હન્તિ નઃ
સર્વાપદો ભક્તિવિનમ્રમૂર્તિભિઃ॥
'And who is now again, reverenced by us, devas, tormented by arrogant asuras and who, called to mind by us obeisant with devotion, destroys this very moment all our calamities.'
ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
એવં સ્તવાદિયુક્તાનાં દેવાનાં તત્ર પાર્વતી।
સ્નાતુમભ્યાયયૌ તોયે જાહ્નવ્યા નૃપનન્દન॥
O Prince, while the devas were thus engaged in praises and (other acts of adoration), Parvati came there to bathe in the waters of the Ganga.
સાબ્રવીત્તાન્ સુરાન્ સુભ્રૂર્ભવદ્ભિઃ સ્તૂયતેઽત્ર કા।
શરીરકોશતશ્ચાસ્યાઃ સમુદ્ભૂતાબ્રવીચ્છિવા॥
She, the lovely-browed, said to those devas, 'Who is praised by you here?' A kind devi, sprung forth from her physical sheath, gave the reply:
સ્તોત્રં મમૈતત્ ક્રિયતે શુમ્ભદૈત્યનિરાકૃતૈઃ।
દેવૈઃ સમેતૈઃ સમરે નિશુમ્ભેન પરાજિતૈઃ॥
'This stotra is addressed to me by the assembled devas set at naught by the asura Shumbha and routed in battle by Nishumbha.'
શરીરકોશાદ્યત્તસ્યાઃ પાર્વત્યા નિઃસૃતામ્બિકા।
કૌશિકીતિ સમસ્તેષુ તતો લોકેષુ ગીયતે॥
Because that Ambika came out of Parvati's physical sheath (Kosa), she is glorified as Kaushiki in all the worlds.
તસ્યાં વિનિર્ગતાયાં તુ કૃષ્ણાભૂત્સાપિ પાર્વતી।
કાલિકેતિ સમાખ્યાતા હિમાચલકૃતાશ્રયા॥
After she had issued forth, Parvati became dark and was called Kalika and stationed on mount Himalaya.
તતોઽમ્બિકાં પરં રૂપં બિભ્રાણાં સુમનોહરમ્ ।
દદર્શ ચણ્ડો મુણ્ડશ્ચ ભૃત્યૌ શુમ્ભનિશુમ્ભયોઃ॥
Then, Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, two servants of Śumbha and Niśumbha, saw that Ambikā bearing a surpassingly charming form.
તાભ્યાં શુમ્ભાય ચાખ્યાતા સાતીવ સુમનોહરા ।
કાપ્યાસ્તે સ્ત્રી મહારાજ ભાસયન્તી હિમાચલમ્॥
They both told Śumbha: 'O King, a certain woman, most surpassingly beautiful, dwells there shedding lustre on mount Himalaya.
નૈવ તાદૃક્ ક્વચિદ્રૂપં દૃષ્ટં કેનચિદુત્તમમ્ ।
જ્ઞાયતાં કાપ્યસૌ દેવી ગૃહ્યતાં ચાસુરેશ્વર॥
'Such supreme beauty was never seen by anyone anywhere. Ascertain who that Devi is and take possession of her, O lord of the asuras!
સ્ત્રીરત્નમતિચાર્વઙ્ગી દ્યોતયન્તી દિશસ્ત્વિષા ।
સા તુ તિષ્ઠતિ દૈત્યેન્દ્ર તાં ભવાન્ દ્રષ્ટુમર્હતિ॥
'A gem among women, of surpassingly beautiful limbs, illuminating the quarters with her lustre, there she stands, O lord of the daityas. You should see her.
યાનિ રત્નાનિ મણયો ગજાશ્વાદીનિ વૈ પ્રભો ।
ત્રૈલોક્યે તુ સમસ્તાનિ સામ્પ્રતં ભાન્તિ તે ગૃહે॥
'O Lord, whatever gems, precious stones, elephants, horses and others there are in the three worlds, they are all now in your house.
ઐરાવતઃ સમાનીતો ગજરત્નં પુરન્દરાત્ ।
પારિજાતતરુશ્ચાયં તથૈવોચ્ચૈઃશ્રવા હયઃ॥
'Airavata, gem among elephants, has been brought away from Purandara (Indra) and so also this Parijata tree and the horse Uccaihsravas.
વિમાનં હંસસંયુક્તમેતત્તિષ્ઠતિ તેઽઙ્ગણે ।
રત્નભૂતમિહાનીતં યદાસીદ્વેધસોઽદ્ભુતમ્॥
'Here stands in your courtyard the wonderful chariot yoked with swans, a wonderful gem (of its class), brought here from Brahma.
નિધિરેષ મહાપદ્મઃ સમાનીતો ધનેશ્વરાત્ ।
કિઞ્જલ્કિનીં દદૌ ચાબ્ધિર્માલામમ્લાનપઙ્કજામ્॥
'Here is the treasure Mahapadma brought from the lord of wealth. And the ocean gave a garland named Kinjalkini made of unfading lotus flowers.
છત્રં તે વારુણં ગેહે કાઞ્ચનસ્રાવિ તિષ્ઠતિ।
તથાયં સ્યન્દનવરો યઃ પુરાઽઽસીત્પ્રજાપતેઃ॥
In your house stands the gold-showering umbrella of Varuna. And here is the excellent chariot that was formerly Prajapati's.
મૃત્યોરુત્ક્રાન્તિદા નામ શક્તિરીશ ત્વયા હૃતા।
પાશઃ સલિલરાજસ્ય ભ્રાતુસ્તવ પરિગ્રહે॥
By you, O Lord, Death's shakti weapon named Utkrantida has been carried off. The noose of the ocean-king is among your brother's possessions.
નિશુમ્ભસ્યાબ્ધિજાતાશ્ચ સમસ્તા રત્નજાતયઃ।
વહ્નિરપિ દદૌ તુભ્યમગ્નિશૌચે ચ વાસસી॥
Nishumbha has every kind of gem produced in the sea. Fire also gave you two garments which are purified by fire.
એવં દૈત્યેન્દ્ર રત્નાનિ સમસ્તાન્યાહૃતાનિ તે।
સ્ત્રીરત્નમેષા કલ્યાણી ત્વયા કસ્માન્ન ગૃહ્યતે॥
Thus, O lord of the asuras, all gems have been brought to you. Why is this jewel of a woman not seized by you?
ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
નિશમ્યેતિ વચઃ શુમ્ભઃ સ તદા ચણ્ડમુણ્ડયોઃ।
પ્રેષયામાસ સુગ્રીવં દૂતં દેવ્યા મહાસુરમ્॥
Hearing these words of Chanda and Munda, Shumbha sent the great asura Sugriva as a messenger to the Devi.
ઇતિ ચેતિ ચ વક્તવ્યા સા ગત્વા વચનાન્મમ।
યથા ચાભ્યેતિ સમ્પ્રીત્યા તથા કાર્યં ત્વયા લઘુ॥
He said: 'Go and tell her thus and thus from me, and act in such a manner that she may quickly come to me in affection.'
સ તત્ર ગત્વા યત્રાસ્તે શૈલોદ્દેશેઽતિશોભને।
તાં ચ દેવીં તતઃ પ્રાહ શ્લક્ષ્ણં મધુરયા ગિરા॥
He went there where the Devi was staying in a very beautiful spot on the mountain, and spoke to her in fine and sweet words.
દૂત ઉવાચ॥
The messenger said:
દેવિ દૈત્યેશ્વરઃ શુમ્ભસ્ત્રૈલોક્યે પરમેશ્વરઃ।
દૂતોઽહં પ્રેષિતસ્તેન ત્વત્સકાશમિહાગતઃ॥
'O Devi, Sumbha, lord of asuras, is the supreme sovereign of three worlds. Sent by him as messenger, I have come here to your presence.
અવ્યાહતાજ્ઞઃ સર્વાસુ યઃ સદા દેવયોનિષુ।
નિર્જિતાખિલદૈત્યારિઃ સ યદાહ શૃણુષ્વ તત્॥
'Hearken to what has been said by him whose command is never resisted among the devas and who has vanquished all the foes of the asuras:
મમ ત્રૈલોક્યમખિલં મમ દેવા વશાનુગાઃ।
યજ્ઞભાગાનહં સર્વાનુપાશ્નામિ પૃથક્ પૃથક્॥
'(He says), "All the three worlds are mine and the devas are obedient to me. I enjoy all their shares of sacrifices separately.
ત્રૈલોક્યે વરરત્નાનિ મમ વશ્યાન્યશેષતઃ।
તથૈવ ગજરત્નં ચ હૃત્વા દેવેન્દ્રવાહનમ્॥
"All the choicest gems in the three worlds are altogether under my power; and so is the jewel of elephants, Airavata, the mount of the lord of devas which I have taken away.
ક્ષીરોદમથનોદ્ભૂતમશ્વરત્નં મમામરૈઃ।
ઉચ્ચૈઃશ્રવસસંજ્ઞં તત્પ્રણિપત્ય સમર્પિતમ્॥
"The gods themselves offered to me with salutations that jewel of horses named Uccaihsravas which arose at the churning of the milk-ocean.
યાનિ ચાન્યાનિ દેવેષુ ગન્ધર્વેષૂરગેષુ ચ।
રત્નભૂતાનિ ભૂતાનિ તાનિ મય્યેવ શોભને॥
"O beautiful lady, whatever other rare objects there existed among the devas, the gandharvas and nagas are now with me.
સ્ત્રીરત્નભૂતાં ત્વાં દેવિ લોકે મન્યામહે વયમ્।
સા ત્વમસ્માનુપાગચ્છ યતો રત્નભુજો વયમ્॥
"We look upon you, O Devi, as the jewel of women in the world. You who are such, come to us, since we are the enjoyers of the best objects."
માં વા મમાનુજં વાપિ નિશુમ્ભમુરુવિક્રમમ્ ।
ભજ ત્વં ચઞ્ચલાપાઙ્ગિ રત્નભૂતાસિ વૈ યતઃ॥
"Take to me or to my younger brother Nisumbha of great prowess, O unsteady-eyed lady, for you are in truth a jewel."
પરમૈશ્વર્યમતુલં પ્રાપ્સ્યસે મત્પરિગ્રહાત્ ।
એતદ્ બુદ્ધ્યા સમાલોચ્ય મત્પરિગ્રહતાં વ્રજ॥
"Wealth, great and beyond compare, you will get by marrying me. Think over this in your mind, and become my wife."
ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
ઇત્યુક્તા સા તદા દેવી ગમ્ભીરાન્તઃસ્મિતા જગૌ ।
દુર્ગા ભગવતી ભદ્રા યયેદં ધાર્યતે જગત્॥
Thus told, Durga the adorable and kind, by whom this universe is supported, then became serene and said.
દેવ્યુવાચ॥
The Devi said:
સત્યમુક્તં ત્વયા નાત્ર મિથ્યા કિઞ્ચિત્ત્વયોદિતમ્ ।
ત્રૈલોક્યાધિપતિઃ શુમ્ભો નિશુમ્ભશ્ચાપિ તાદૃશઃ॥
"You have spoken truth; nothing false has been uttered by you in this matter. Sumbha is indeed the sovereign of the three worlds and likewise is also Nisumbha."
કિં ત્વત્ર યત્પ્રતિજ્ઞાતં મિથ્યા તત્ક્રિયતે કથમ્ ।
શ્રૂયતામલ્પબુદ્ધિત્વાત્પ્રતિજ્ઞા યા કૃતા પુરા॥
"But in this matter, how can that which has been promised be made false? Hear what promise I had made already out of foolishness."
યો માં જયતિ સંગ્રામે યો મે દર્પં વ્યપોહતિ ।
યો મે પ્રતિબલો લોકે સ મે ભર્તા ભવિષ્યતિ॥
"He who conquers me in battle, removes my pride and is my match in strength in the world shall be my husband."
તદાગચ્છતુ શુમ્ભોઽત્ર નિશુમ્ભો વા મહાસુરઃ ।
માં જિત્વા કિં ચિરેણાત્ર પાણિં ગૃહ્ણાતુ મે લઘુ॥
So let Sumbha come here then, or Nisumbha the great asura. Vanquishing me here, let him soon take my hand in marriage. Why delay?
દૂત ઉવાચ॥
The messenger said:
અવલિપ્તાસિ મૈવં ત્વં દેવિ બ્રૂહિ મમાગ્રતઃ ।
ત્રૈલોક્યે કઃ પુમાંસ્તિષ્ઠેદગ્રે શુમ્ભનિશુમ્ભયોઃ॥
O Devi, you are haughty. Talk not so before me. Which man in the three worlds will stand before Sumbha and Nisumbha?
અન્યેષામપિ દૈત્યાનાં સર્વે દેવા ન વૈ યુધિ ।
તિષ્ઠન્તિ સમ્મુખે દેવિ કિં પુનઃ સ્ત્રી ત્વમેકિકા॥
All the devas verily cannot stand face to face with even the other asuras in battle. Why mention you, O Devi, a single woman?
ઇન્દ્રાદ્યાઃ સકલા દેવાસ્તસ્થુર્યેષાં ન સંયુગે ।
શુમ્ભાદીનાં કથં તેષાં સ્ત્રી પ્રયાસ્યસિ સમ્મુખમ્॥
Indra and all other devas could not stand in battle against Sumbha and other asuras, how will you, a woman, face them?
સા ત્વં ગચ્છ મયૈવોક્તા પાર્શ્વં શુમ્ભનિશુમ્ભયોઃ ।
કેશાકર્ષણનિર્ધૂતગૌરવા મા ગમિષ્યસિ॥
On my word itself, you go to Sumbha and Nishumbha. Let it not be that you go to them with your dignity lost by being dragged by your hair.
દેવ્યુવાચ॥
The Devi said:
એવમેતદ્ બલી શુમ્ભો નિશુમ્ભશ્ચાતિવીર્યવાન્ ।
કિં કરોમિ પ્રતિજ્ઞા મે યદનાલોચિતા પુરા॥
Yes, it is; Sumbha is strong and so is Nisumbha exceedingly heroic! What can I do since there stands my ill-considered sankalp taken long ago?
સ ત્વં ગચ્છ મયોક્તં તે યદેતત્સર્વમાદૃતઃ ।
તદાચક્ષ્વાસુરેન્દ્રાય સ ચ યુક્તં કરોતુ તત્॥
Go back, and tell the lord of asuras carefully all this that I have said; let him do whatever he considers proper.
