Opening dohas
jay jay tulasee bhagavatee, satyavatee sukhadaanee.
Glory, glory to Devi Tulsi, the truthful one who bestows happiness.
namo namo hari preyasee, shree vrindaa gun khaanee.
I bow again and again to the beloved of Hari, Shri Vrinda, the mine of virtues.
shree hari sheesh birajinee, dehu amar var amb.
O Mother who resides on the head of Hari, grant me the boon of immortality.
janahit he vrindaavanee, ab n karahu vilamb.
For the welfare of the people, O Vrindavani, do not delay any longer.
Chaupai
dhany dhany shree tulasee maataa. mahimaa agam sadaa shruti gaataa.
Blessed, blessed are you, Mother Tulsi; the Vedas constantly sing of your unfathomable glory.
hari ke praanahu se tum pyaaree. hareeheen hetu keenho tap bhaaree.
You are dearer to Hari than his own life, and for his sake you performed severe penance.
jab prasann hai darshan deenhyo. tab kar joree vinay us keenhyo.
When he was pleased and revealed himself to you, you folded your hands and made a request.
he bhagavant kant mam hohoo. deen jaanee jani chhaadaahoo chhohu.
"O Hari, become my husband; knowing me to be humble, do not forsake your affection."
sunee lakshmee tulasee kee baanee. deenho shraap kadh par aanee.
Hearing these words of Tulsi, Devi Lakshmi became angry and laid a curse upon her.
us ayogy var maangan haaree. hohoo vitap tum jad tanu dhaaree.
"O you who ask for an unworthy boon, become a tree with a lifeless body."
sunee tulasee heen shrapyo tehin thaamaa. karahu vaas tuhoo neechan dhaamaa.
Hearing this, Tulsi cursed her right back on the spot: "May you dwell in a lowly abode."
diyo vachan hari tab tatkaalaa. sunahu sumukhee jani hohoo bihaalaa.
Hari then immediately gave his word: "Listen, beautiful one, do not be distressed.
samay paaee vhau rau paatee toraa. pujihau aas vachan sat moraa.
When the time comes I will become your husband; my true word will fulfil your hope."
tab gokul mah gop sudaamaa. taasu bhaee tulasee too baamaa.
Then in Gokul there was a cowherd named Sudama, and you, Tulsi, became his wife.
krishn raas leelaa ke maahee. raadhe shakyo prem lakhee naahee.
During Krishna's Ras Leela, Radha could not bear to see your mutual love.
diyo shraap tulasih tatkaalaa. nar lokahee tum janmahu baalaa.
She immediately cursed Tulsi: "You shall be born as a girl in the mortal world."
yo gop vah daanav raajaa. shankh chud naamak shir taajaa.
That cowherd became a asura king, wearing the crown under the name Shankhachuda.
tulasee bhaee taasu kee naaree. param satee gun roop agaaree.
Tulsi became his wife, a supreme paragon of chastity, virtue, and beauty.
as dvai kalp beet jab gayaoo. kalp triteey janm tab bhayaoo.
When two cosmic ages had thus passed, her third birth took place in the third age.
vrindaa naam bhayo tulasee ko. asur jalandhar naam pati ko.
Tulsi was given the name Vrinda, and her asura husband was named Jalandhar.
kari ati dvand atul baladhaamaa. leenhaa shankar se sangraamaa.
Possessing incomparable strength, he waged a fierce conflict and went to war with Shiv ji.
jab nij sainy sahit shiv haare. maran hetu hari paas pukaare.
When Shiva and his army were defeated, he called out to Hari to save him from death.
pativrataa vrindaa thee naaree. kooo n sake patihi sanhaaree.
Because Vrinda was a fiercely chaste wife, no one was able to kill her husband.
tab jalandhar hee bhesh banaaee. vrindaa dhig hari pahuchyo jaaee.
Then, taking the disguise of Jalandhar himself, Hari approached Vrinda.
shiv hit lahee kari kapat prasangaa. kiyo sateetv dharm tohee bhangaa.
For the sake of Shiva he engaged in this deceitful act and broke your sankalp of chastity.
bhayo jalandhar kar sanhaaraa. sunee ur shok upaaraa.
Jalandhar was then destroyed, and hearing this, boundless grief arose in her heart.
tihee kshan diyo kapat hari taaree. lakhee vrindaa duhkh giraa uchaaree.
At that moment Hari dropped his disguise, and seeing him, Vrinda spoke words of sorrow.
jalandhar jas hatyo abheetaa. soee raavan tas harihee seetaa.
"Just as you have fearlessly killed Jalandhar, so will Ravana steal your Sita.
as prastar sam hriday tumhaaraa. dharm khandee mam patihi sanhaaraa.
Your heart is as hard as stone, for you broke my dharma and killed my husband.
yahee kaaran lahee shraap hamaaraa. hove tanu paashaan tumhaaraa.
For this reason, receive my curse: may your body turn to stone."
sooni hari turataahee vachan uchaare. diyo shraap binaa vichaare.
Hearing this, Hari immediately replied: "You have given this curse without thinking.
lakhyo n nij karatootee pati ko. chhalan chahyo jab paaravatee ko.
You did not see the misdeeds of your husband, who wanted to deceive Parvati.
jadamati tuhu as ho jadaroopaa. jag mah tulasee vitap anoopaa.
O foolish one, you shall become a lifeless form, an unparalleled Tulsi tree in the world."
dhagv roop ham shaaligraamaa. nadee gandakee beech lalaamaa.
"I will take the beautiful form of the Shaligram stone in the midst of the Gandaki river.
jo tulasee dal hamahee chadh ihain. sab sukh bhogee param pad paeehai.
Whoever offers Tulsi leaves to me will enjoy all comforts and attain the supreme state."
binu tulasee hari jalat shareeraa. atishay uthat sheesh ur peeraa.
Without Tulsi, Hari's body burns and a great pain arises in his head and heart.
jo tulasee dal hari shir dhaarat. so sahasr ghat amrit daarat.
Whoever places a Tulsi leaf on Hari's head pours a thousand pitchers of nectar over him.
tulasee hari man ranjanee haaree. rog dosh duhkh bhanjanee haaree.
Tulsi delights the mind of Hari and destroys all diseases, faults, and sorrows.
prem sahit hari bhajan nirantar. tulasee raadhaa men naahee antar.
For one who constantly offers puja to Hari with love, there is no difference between Tulsi and Radha.
vyanjan ho chhappanahu prakaaraa. binu tulasee dal n hareehi pyaaraa.
Even if there are fifty-six types of dishes, they are not dear to Hari without a Tulsi leaf.
sakal teerth tulasee taru chhaahee. lahat mukti jan sanshay naahee.
All the holy pilgrimage sites reside in the shade of the Tulsi tree, and people undoubtedly attain liberation there.
kavi sundar ik hari gun gaavat. tulasihi nikat sahasagun paavat.
The poet Sundar sings the praises of Hari and obtains a thousandfold merit near the Tulsi plant.
basat nikat durbaasaa dhaamaa. jo prayaas te poorv lalaamaa.
He resides near the abode of Durvasa, which is a beautiful place east of Prayag.
paath karahi jo nit nar naaree. hohee sukh bhaashahi tripuraaree.
Shiv ji says that the men and women who recite this daily will become happy.
Closing dohas
tulasee chaaleesaa padhahee, tulasee taru grah dhaaree.
Whoever reads the Tulsi Chalisa while keeping a Tulsi plant in their home will be blessed.
deepadaan kari putr phal, paavahee bandhyahu naaree.
By offering a diya, even a barren woman will obtain the fruit of a son.
sakal duhkh daridr hari, haar hvai param prasann.
Hari removes all their sorrows and poverty, and becomes supremely pleased.
aashiy dhan jan ladahi, grah basahee poornaa atr.
They will be blessed with wealth and family, and their home will be filled with abundance.
laahee abhimat phal jagat, mah laahee poorn sab kaam.
They will obtain their desired fruits in this world, and all their tasks will be completed.
jeee dal arpahee tulasee tanh, sahas basahee hareeraam.
Wherever one offers Tulsi leaves, Hari Ram resides there a thousand times over.
tulasee mahimaa naam lakh, tulasee soot sukharaam.
Seeing the glory of Tulsi's name, Sukhram, the son of Tulsi, composed this.
maanas chaalees rachyo, jag mahan tulaseedaas.
Just as Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas, this Chalisa was created for the world.
