Opening dohas

1

જય જય તુલસી ભગવતી, સત્યવતી સુખદાની।

Glory, glory to Devi Tulsi, the truthful one who bestows happiness.

નમો નમો હરિ પ્રેયસી, શ્રી વૃન્દા ગુન ખાની॥

I bow again and again to the beloved of Hari, Shri Vrinda, the mine of virtues.

શ્રી હરિ શીશ બિરજિની, દેહુ અમર વર અમ્બ।

O Mother who resides on the head of Hari, grant me the boon of immortality.

જનહિત હે વૃન્દાવની, અબ ન કરહુ વિલમ્બ॥

For the welfare of the people, O Vrindavani, do not delay any longer.

Chaupai

ધન્ય ધન્ય શ્રી તુલસી માતા।
મહિમા અગમ સદા શ્રુતિ ગાતા॥

Blessed, blessed are you, Mother Tulsi; the Vedas constantly sing of your unfathomable glory.

હરિ કે પ્રાણહુ સે તુમ પ્યારી।
હરીહીઁ હેતુ કીન્હો તપ ભારી॥

You are dearer to Hari than his own life, and for his sake you performed severe penance.

3

જબ પ્રસન્ન હૈ દર્શન દીન્હ્યો।
તબ કર જોરી વિનય ઉસ કીન્હ્યો॥

When he was pleased and revealed himself to you, you folded your hands and made a request.

4

હે ભગવન્ત કન્ત મમ હોહૂ।
દીન જાની જનિ છાડાહૂ છોહુ॥

"O Hari, become my husband; knowing me to be humble, do not forsake your affection."

સુની લક્ષ્મી તુલસી કી બાની।
દીન્હો શ્રાપ કધ પર આની॥

Hearing these words of Tulsi, Devi Lakshmi became angry and laid a curse upon her.

ઉસ અયોગ્ય વર માંગન હારી।
હોહૂ વિટપ તુમ જડ તનુ ધારી॥

"O you who ask for an unworthy boon, become a tree with a lifeless body."

સુની તુલસી હીઁ શ્રપ્યો તેહિં ઠામા।
કરહુ વાસ તુહૂ નીચન ધામા॥

Hearing this, Tulsi cursed her right back on the spot: "May you dwell in a lowly abode."

દિયો વચન હરિ તબ તત્કાલા।
સુનહુ સુમુખી જનિ હોહૂ બિહાલા॥

Hari then immediately gave his word: "Listen, beautiful one, do not be distressed.

સમય પાઈ વ્હૌ રૌ પાતી તોરા।
પુજિહૌ આસ વચન સત મોરા॥

When the time comes I will become your husband; my true word will fulfil your hope."

10

તબ ગોકુલ મહ ગોપ સુદામા।
તાસુ ભઈ તુલસી તૂ બામા॥

Then in Gokul there was a cowherd named Sudama, and you, Tulsi, became his wife.

11

કૃષ્ણ રાસ લીલા કે માહી।
રાધે શક્યો પ્રેમ લખી નાહી॥

During Krishna's Ras Leela, Radha could not bear to see your mutual love.

12

દિયો શ્રાપ તુલસિહ તત્કાલા।
નર લોકહી તુમ જન્મહુ બાલા॥

She immediately cursed Tulsi: "You shall be born as a girl in the mortal world."

13

યો ગોપ વહ દાનવ રાજા।
શઙ્ખ ચુડ નામક શિર તાજા॥

That cowherd became a asura king, wearing the crown under the name Shankhachuda.

14

તુલસી ભઈ તાસુ કી નારી।
પરમ સતી ગુણ રૂપ અગારી॥

Tulsi became his wife, a supreme paragon of chastity, virtue, and beauty.

15

અસ દ્વૈ કલ્પ બીત જબ ગયઊ।
કલ્પ તૃતીય જન્મ તબ ભયઊ॥

When two cosmic ages had thus passed, her third birth took place in the third age.

16

વૃન્દા નામ ભયો તુલસી કો।
અસુર જલન્ધર નામ પતિ કો॥

Tulsi was given the name Vrinda, and her asura husband was named Jalandhar.

17

કરિ અતિ દ્વન્દ અતુલ બલધામા।
લીન્હા શઙ્કર સે સઙ્ગ્રામા॥

Possessing incomparable strength, he waged a fierce conflict and went to war with Shiv ji.

18

જબ નિજ સૈન્ય સહિત શિવ હારે।
મરણ હેતુ હરિ પાસ પુકારે॥

When Shiva and his army were defeated, he called out to Hari to save him from death.

19

પતિવ્રતા વૃન્દા થી નારી।
કોઊ ન સકે પતિહિ સંહારી॥

Because Vrinda was a fiercely chaste wife, no one was able to kill her husband.

20

તબ જલન્ધર હી ભેષ બનાઈ।
વૃન્દા ઢિગ હરિ પહુચ્યો જાઈ॥

Then, taking the disguise of Jalandhar himself, Hari approached Vrinda.

21

શિવ હિત લહી કરિ કપટ પ્રસંગા।
કિયો સતીત્વ ધર્મ તોહી ભંગા॥

For the sake of Shiva he engaged in this deceitful act and broke your sankalp of chastity.

22

ભયો જલન્ધર કર સંહારા।
સુની ઉર શોક ઉપારા॥

Jalandhar was then destroyed, and hearing this, boundless grief arose in her heart.

23

તિહી ક્ષણ દિયો કપટ હરિ ટારી।
લખી વૃન્દા દુઃખ ગિરા ઉચારી॥

At that moment Hari dropped his disguise, and seeing him, Vrinda spoke words of sorrow.

24

જલન્ધર જસ હત્યો અભીતા।
સોઈ રાવન તસ હરિહી સીતા॥

"Just as you have fearlessly killed Jalandhar, so will Ravana steal your Sita.

25

અસ પ્રસ્તર સમ હૃદય તુમ્હારા।
ધર્મ ખણ્ડી મમ પતિહિ સંહારા॥

Your heart is as hard as stone, for you broke my dharma and killed my husband.

26

યહી કારણ લહી શ્રાપ હમારા।
હોવે તનુ પાષાણ તુમ્હારા॥

For this reason, receive my curse: may your body turn to stone."

27

સૂનિ હરિ તુરતાહી વચન ઉચારે।
દિયો શ્રાપ બિના વિચારે॥

Hearing this, Hari immediately replied: "You have given this curse without thinking.

28

લખ્યો ન નિજ કરતૂતી પતિ કો।
છલન ચહ્યો જબ પારવતી કો॥

You did not see the misdeeds of your husband, who wanted to deceive Parvati.

29

જડમતિ તુહુ અસ હો જડરૂપા।
જગ મહ તુલસી વિટપ અનૂપા॥

O foolish one, you shall become a lifeless form, an unparalleled Tulsi tree in the world."

30

ધગ્વ રૂપ હમ શાલિગ્રામા।
નદી ગણ્ડકી બીચ લલામા॥

"I will take the beautiful form of the Shaligram stone in the midst of the Gandaki river.

31

જો તુલસી દલ હમહી ચઢ ઇહૈં।
સબ સુખ ભોગી પરમ પદ પઈહૈ॥

Whoever offers Tulsi leaves to me will enjoy all comforts and attain the supreme state."

32

બિનુ તુલસી હરિ જલત શરીરા।
અતિશય ઉઠત શીશ ઉર પીરા॥

Without Tulsi, Hari's body burns and a great pain arises in his head and heart.

33

જો તુલસી દલ હરિ શિર ધારત।
સો સહસ્ર ઘટ અમૃત ડારત॥

Whoever places a Tulsi leaf on Hari's head pours a thousand pitchers of nectar over him.

તુલસી હરિ મન રઞ્જની હારી।
રોગ દોષ દુઃખ ભંજની હારી॥

Tulsi delights the mind of Hari and destroys all diseases, faults, and sorrows.

35

પ્રેમ સહિત હરિ ભજન નિરન્તર।
તુલસી રાધા મેં નાહી અન્તર॥

For one who constantly offers puja to Hari with love, there is no difference between Tulsi and Radha.

36

વ્યન્જન હો છપ્પનહુ પ્રકારા।
બિનુ તુલસી દલ ન હરીહિ પ્યારા॥

Even if there are fifty-six types of dishes, they are not dear to Hari without a Tulsi leaf.

37

સકલ તીર્થ તુલસી તરુ છાહી।
લહત મુક્તિ જન સંશય નાહી॥

All the holy pilgrimage sites reside in the shade of the Tulsi tree, and people undoubtedly attain liberation there.

38

કવિ સુન્દર ઇક હરિ ગુણ ગાવત।
તુલસિહિ નિકટ સહસગુણ પાવત॥

The poet Sundar sings the praises of Hari and obtains a thousandfold merit near the Tulsi plant.

બસત નિકટ દુર્બાસા ધામા।
જો પ્રયાસ તે પૂર્વ લલામા॥

He resides near the abode of Durvasa, which is a beautiful place east of Prayag.

40

પાઠ કરહિ જો નિત નર નારી।
હોહી સુખ ભાષહિ ત્રિપુરારી॥

Shiv ji says that the men and women who recite this daily will become happy.

Closing dohas

1

તુલસી ચાલીસા પઢહી, તુલસી તરુ ગ્રહ ધારી।

Whoever reads the Tulsi Chalisa while keeping a Tulsi plant in their home will be blessed.

દીપદાન કરિ પુત્ર ફલ, પાવહી બન્ધ્યહુ નારી॥

By offering a diya, even a barren woman will obtain the fruit of a son.

સકલ દુઃખ દરિદ્ર હરિ, હાર હ્વૈ પરમ પ્રસન્ન।

Hari removes all their sorrows and poverty, and becomes supremely pleased.

આશિય ધન જન લડહિ, ગ્રહ બસહી પૂર્ણા અત્ર॥

They will be blessed with wealth and family, and their home will be filled with abundance.

લાહી અભિમત ફલ જગત, મહ લાહી પૂર્ણ સબ કામ।

They will obtain their desired fruits in this world, and all their tasks will be completed.

જેઈ દલ અર્પહી તુલસી તંહ, સહસ બસહી હરીરામ॥

Wherever one offers Tulsi leaves, Hari Ram resides there a thousand times over.

તુલસી મહિમા નામ લખ, તુલસી સૂત સુખરામ।

Seeing the glory of Tulsi's name, Sukhram, the son of Tulsi, composed this.

માનસ ચાલીસ રચ્યો, જગ મહં તુલસીદાસ॥

Just as Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas, this Chalisa was created for the world.
