Opening dohas

1

jaya jaya tulasī bhagavatī, satyavatī sukhadānī.

Glory, glory to Devi Tulsi, the truthful one who bestows happiness.

namo namo hari preyasī, śrī vr̥ndā guna khānī.

I bow again and again to the beloved of Hari, Shri Vrinda, the mine of virtues.

śrī hari śīśa birajinī, dehu amara vara amba.

O Mother who resides on the head of Hari, grant me the boon of immortality.

janahita he vr̥ndāvanī, aba na karahu vilamba.

For the welfare of the people, O Vrindavani, do not delay any longer.

Chaupai

dhanya dhanya śrī tulasī mātā. mahimā agama sadā śruti gātā.

Blessed, blessed are you, Mother Tulsi; the Vedas constantly sing of your unfathomable glory.

hari ke prāṇahu se tuma pyārī. harīhīm̐ hetu kīnho tapa bhārī.

You are dearer to Hari than his own life, and for his sake you performed severe penance.

jaba prasanna hai darśana dīnhyo. taba kara jorī vinaya usa kīnhyo.

When he was pleased and revealed himself to you, you folded your hands and made a request.

he bhagavanta kanta mama hohū. dīna jānī jani chāḍāhū chohu.

"O Hari, become my husband; knowing me to be humble, do not forsake your affection."

sunī lakṣmī tulasī kī bānī. dīnho śrāpa kadha para ānī.

Hearing these words of Tulsi, Devi Lakshmi became angry and laid a curse upon her.

usa ayogya vara māṁgana hārī. hohū viṭapa tuma jaḍa tanu dhārī.

"O you who ask for an unworthy boon, become a tree with a lifeless body."

sunī tulasī hīm̐ śrapyo tehiṁ ṭhāmā. karahu vāsa tuhū nīcana dhāmā.

Hearing this, Tulsi cursed her right back on the spot: "May you dwell in a lowly abode."

diyo vacana hari taba tatkālā. sunahu sumukhī jani hohū bihālā.

Hari then immediately gave his word: "Listen, beautiful one, do not be distressed.

samaya pāī vhau rau pātī torā. pujihau āsa vacana sata morā.

When the time comes I will become your husband; my true word will fulfil your hope."

taba gokula maha gopa sudāmā. tāsu bhaī tulasī tū bāmā.

Then in Gokul there was a cowherd named Sudama, and you, Tulsi, became his wife.

kr̥ṣṇa rāsa līlā ke māhī. rādhe śakyo prema lakhī nāhī.

During Krishna's Ras Leela, Radha could not bear to see your mutual love.

diyo śrāpa tulasiha tatkālā. nara lokahī tuma janmahu bālā.

She immediately cursed Tulsi: "You shall be born as a girl in the mortal world."

yo gopa vaha dānava rājā. śaṅkha cuḍa nāmaka śira tājā.

That cowherd became a asura king, wearing the crown under the name Shankhachuda.

14

tulasī bhaī tāsu kī nārī. parama satī guṇa rūpa agārī.

Tulsi became his wife, a supreme paragon of chastity, virtue, and beauty.

15

asa dvai kalpa bīta jaba gayaū. kalpa tr̥tīya janma taba bhayaū.

When two cosmic ages had thus passed, her third birth took place in the third age.

vr̥ndā nāma bhayo tulasī ko. asura jalandhara nāma pati ko.

Tulsi was given the name Vrinda, and her asura husband was named Jalandhar.

kari ati dvanda atula baladhāmā. līnhā śaṅkara se saṅgrāmā.

Possessing incomparable strength, he waged a fierce conflict and went to war with Shiv ji.

jaba nija sainya sahita śiva hāre. maraṇa hetu hari pāsa pukāre.

When Shiva and his army were defeated, he called out to Hari to save him from death.

pativratā vr̥ndā thī nārī. koū na sake patihi saṁhārī.

Because Vrinda was a fiercely chaste wife, no one was able to kill her husband.

20

taba jalandhara hī bheṣa banāī. vr̥ndā ḍhiga hari pahucyo jāī.

Then, taking the disguise of Jalandhar himself, Hari approached Vrinda.

śiva hita lahī kari kapaṭa prasaṁgā. kiyo satītva dharma tohī bhaṁgā.

For the sake of Shiva he engaged in this deceitful act and broke your sankalp of chastity.

bhayo jalandhara kara saṁhārā. sunī ura śoka upārā.

Jalandhar was then destroyed, and hearing this, boundless grief arose in her heart.

tihī kṣaṇa diyo kapaṭa hari ṭārī. lakhī vr̥ndā duḥkha girā ucārī.

At that moment Hari dropped his disguise, and seeing him, Vrinda spoke words of sorrow.

jalandhara jasa hatyo abhītā. soī rāvana tasa harihī sītā.

"Just as you have fearlessly killed Jalandhar, so will Ravana steal your Sita.

25

asa prastara sama hr̥daya tumhārā. dharma khaṇḍī mama patihi saṁhārā.

Your heart is as hard as stone, for you broke my dharma and killed my husband.

26

yahī kāraṇa lahī śrāpa hamārā. hove tanu pāṣāṇa tumhārā.

For this reason, receive my curse: may your body turn to stone."

sūni hari turatāhī vacana ucāre. diyo śrāpa binā vicāre.

Hearing this, Hari immediately replied: "You have given this curse without thinking.

lakhyo na nija karatūtī pati ko. chalana cahyo jaba pāravatī ko.

You did not see the misdeeds of your husband, who wanted to deceive Parvati.

jaḍamati tuhu asa ho jaḍarūpā. jaga maha tulasī viṭapa anūpā.

O foolish one, you shall become a lifeless form, an unparalleled Tulsi tree in the world."

30

dhagva rūpa hama śāligrāmā. nadī gaṇḍakī bīca lalāmā.

"I will take the beautiful form of the Shaligram stone in the midst of the Gandaki river.

31

jo tulasī dala hamahī caḍha ihaiṁ. saba sukha bhogī parama pada paīhai.

Whoever offers Tulsi leaves to me will enjoy all comforts and attain the supreme state."

binu tulasī hari jalata śarīrā. atiśaya uṭhata śīśa ura pīrā.

Without Tulsi, Hari's body burns and a great pain arises in his head and heart.

33

jo tulasī dala hari śira dhārata. so sahasra ghaṭa amr̥ta ḍārata.

Whoever places a Tulsi leaf on Hari's head pours a thousand pitchers of nectar over him.

34

tulasī hari mana rañjanī hārī. roga doṣa duḥkha bhaṁjanī hārī.

Tulsi delights the mind of Hari and destroys all diseases, faults, and sorrows.

prema sahita hari bhajana nirantara. tulasī rādhā meṁ nāhī antara.

For one who constantly offers puja to Hari with love, there is no difference between Tulsi and Radha.

36

vyanjana ho chappanahu prakārā. binu tulasī dala na harīhi pyārā.

Even if there are fifty-six types of dishes, they are not dear to Hari without a Tulsi leaf.

37

sakala tīrtha tulasī taru chāhī. lahata mukti jana saṁśaya nāhī.

All the holy pilgrimage sites reside in the shade of the Tulsi tree, and people undoubtedly attain liberation there.

kavi sundara ika hari guṇa gāvata. tulasihi nikaṭa sahasaguṇa pāvata.

The poet Sundar sings the praises of Hari and obtains a thousandfold merit near the Tulsi plant.

basata nikaṭa durbāsā dhāmā. jo prayāsa te pūrva lalāmā.

He resides near the abode of Durvasa, which is a beautiful place east of Prayag.

pāṭha karahi jo nita nara nārī. hohī sukha bhāṣahi tripurārī.

Shiv ji says that the men and women who recite this daily will become happy.

Closing dohas

1

tulasī cālīsā paḍhahī, tulasī taru graha dhārī.

Whoever reads the Tulsi Chalisa while keeping a Tulsi plant in their home will be blessed.

dīpadāna kari putra phala, pāvahī bandhyahu nārī.

By offering a diya, even a barren woman will obtain the fruit of a son.

sakala duḥkha daridra hari, hāra hvai parama prasanna.

Hari removes all their sorrows and poverty, and becomes supremely pleased.

āśiya dhana jana laḍahi, graha basahī pūrṇā atra.

They will be blessed with wealth and family, and their home will be filled with abundance.

lāhī abhimata phala jagata, maha lāhī pūrṇa saba kāma.

They will obtain their desired fruits in this world, and all their tasks will be completed.

jeī dala arpahī tulasī taṁha, sahasa basahī harīrāma.

Wherever one offers Tulsi leaves, Hari Ram resides there a thousand times over.

tulasī mahimā nāma lakha, tulasī sūta sukharāma.

Seeing the glory of Tulsi's name, Sukhram, the son of Tulsi, composed this.

mānasa cālīsa racyo, jaga mahaṁ tulasīdāsa.

Just as Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas, this Chalisa was created for the world.
