The Devi of Navratri

hiranyavarnaan harineen suvarnarajatasrajaam . chandraan hiranmayeen lakshmeen jaatavedo m aavah .

O Agni Jataveda, bring to me Lakshmi Maa: golden in colour, graceful as a doe, wearing garlands of gold and silver, lovely as the moon, radiant as gold.

I call on Shri Devi, before whom horses go, who rides in the midst of chariots, who is roused by the trumpeting of elephants. May Shri Devi take delight in me.

kaan sosmitaan hiranyapraakaaraamaardraan jvalanteen triptaan tarpayanteem . padme sthitaan padmavarnaan taamihopahvaye shriyam .

I call here Shri, who is bliss itself, softly smiling, within walls of gold, tender with compassion, shining bright, content and giving content, seated on the lotus, the colour of the lotus.

chandraan prabhaasaan yashasaa jvalanteen shriyan loke devajushtaamudaaraam . taan padmineemeen sharanamahan prapadye'lakshmeerme nashyataan tvaan vrine .

I take refuge in Her: lovely as the moon, shining, bright with glory, Shri whom the devas cherish in this world, generous, She of the lotus. May all misfortune leave me; I choose You.

aadityavarne tapaso'dhijaato vanaspatistav vriksho'th bilvah . tasy phalaani tapasaa nudantu maayaantaraayaashch baahyaa alakshmeeh .

O You who shine like the sun, the bilva, king of the forest, was born of Your tapas. May its fruits, through tapas, drive away the want within me and the want without.

upaitu maan devasakhah keertishch maninaa sah . praadurbhooto'smi raashtre'smin keertimriddhin dadaatu me .

May the friend of the devas, Kubera, come to me, and fame with the jewel. I am born in this land; may He give me fame and plenty.

kshutpipaasaamalaan jyeshthaamalakshmeen naashayaamyaham . abhootimasamriddhin ch sarvaan nirnud me grihaat .

I drive away Alakshmi, the elder sister, who comes with hunger, thirst and uncleanness. O Maa, cast out of my house all ill fortune and all lack.

gandhadvaaraan duraadharshaan nityapushtaan kareeshineem . eeshvareen sarvabhootaanaan taamihopahvaye shriyam .

I call here Shri, known by Her fragrance, whom none can overcome, ever flourishing, rich in herds, the sovereign of all beings.

manasah kaamamaakootin vaachah satyamasheemahi . pashoonaan roopamannasy mayi shreeh shrayataan yashah .

May we win what the mind longs for and what it resolves, and truth in our speech. May the wealth of cattle and of food, may Shri and good name, come to rest in me.

kardamen prajaabhootaa mayi sambhav kardam . shriyan vaasay me kule maataran padmamaalineem .

Through Kardama, Her son, Lakshmi Maa is a mother. O Kardama, come and dwell with me, and let Shri, the mother wearing a garland of lotuses, live in my family.

aapah srijantu snigdhaani chikleet vas me grihe . ni ch deveen maataran shriyan vaasay me kule .

May the waters bring forth all that is gentle and rich. O Chiklita, live in my house, and let Devi Shri, the mother, live in my family.

aardraan pushkarineen pushtin pingalaan padmamaalineem . chandraan hiranmayeen lakshmeen jaatavedo m aavah .

O Jataveda, bring to me Lakshmi Maa: tender, dwelling among lotus pools, the giver of nourishment, golden-tawny, garlanded with lotuses, lovely as the moon, radiant as gold.

aardraan yah karineen yashtin suvarnaan hemamaalineem . sooryaan hiranmayeen lakshmeen jaatavedo m aavah .

O Jataveda, bring to me Lakshmi Maa: tender, who holds the staff of rule, golden, wearing a garland of gold, bright as the sun, radiant as gold.

taan m aavah jaatavedo lakshmeemanapagaamineem . yasyaan hiranyan prabhootan gaavo daasyo'shvaanvindeyan purushaanaham .

O Jataveda, bring to me Lakshmi Maa, who never leaves, through whom I may find gold in plenty, cattle, helpers, horses and people of my own.

yah shuchih prayato bhootvaa juhuyaadaajyamanvaham . shriyah panchadasharchan ch shreekaamah satatan japet .

One who longs for Shri should be clean and collected, offer ghee into the fire every day, and say these fifteen verses of Shri again and again.
