Saraswati Maa

Saraswati Maa

Learning, music, the white lotus

1

yā kundendutuṣārahāradhavalā yā śubhravastrāvr̥tā yā vīṇāvaradaṇḍamaṇḍitakarā yā śvetapadmāsanā. yā brahmācyutaśaṅkaraprabhr̥tibhirdevaiḥ sadā vanditā sā māṁ pātu sarasvatī bhagavatī niḥśeṣajāḍyāpahā.

She who is white as the kunda flower, the moon, snow and a pearl string; who is wrapped in bright cloth; whose hand is graced by the vina; who is seated on the white lotus; whom Brahma, Vishnu, Shankar and the devtas praise always — may she, Saraswati Maa, who takes away all dullness, keep me.

2

āśāsu rāśībhavadaṅgavallī-bhāsaiva dāsīkr̥tadugdhasindhum. mandasmitairninditaśāradenduṁ vande'ravindāsanasundari tvām.

Lovely one seated on the lotus — the light of your body gathered in every quarter makes a servant of the sea of milk, and your slight smile puts the autumn moon to shame. I bow to you.

3

śāradā śāradāmbhojavadanā vadanāmbuje. sarvadā sarvadāsmākaṁ sannidhiṁ sannidhiṁ kriyāt.

Sharada, her face the autumn lotus, giver of every wish — may she dwell always, with every good thing, in the lotus of my mouth.

4

sarasvatīṁ ca tāṁ naumi vāgadhiṣṭhātr̥devatām. devatvaṁ pratipadyante yadanugrahato janāḥ.

I bow to Saraswati, the devi who presides over speech, by whose grace a person comes to share in the nature of the devtas.

5

pātu no nikaṣagrāvā matihemnaḥ sarasvatī. prājñetaraparicchedaṁ vacasaiva karoti yā.

May Saraswati keep us — the touchstone for the gold that is the mind, who tells the learned from the foolish by their speech alone.

6

śuklāṁ brahmavicārasāraparamāmādyāṁ jagadvyāpinīṁ vīṇāpustakadhāriṇīmabhayadāṁ jāḍyāndhakārāpahām. haste sphāṭikamālikāṁ ca dadhatīṁ padmāsane saṁsthitāṁ vande tāṁ parameśvarīṁ bhagavatīṁ buddhipradāṁ śāradām.

White of form, the very heart of the enquiry into Brahman, first and all-pervading, holding the vina and the book, giving fearlessness, driving off the dark of dullness, the crystal mala in her hand, seated on the lotus, giver of understanding — I bow to Sharada, the supreme Devi.

7

vīṇādhare vipulamaṅgaladānaśīle bhaktārtināśini virañciharīśavandye. kīrtiprade'khilamanorathade mahārhe vidyāpradāyini sarasvati naumi nityam.

Holder of the vina, whose nature is to give abundant blessing, undoer of your people's grief, bowed to by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, giver of renown and of every wish, most worthy, giver of learning — Saraswati, I bow to you daily.

8

śvetābjapūrṇavimalāsanasaṁsthite he śvetāmbarāvr̥tamanoharamañjugātre. udyanmanojñasitapaṅkajamañjulāsye vidyāpradāyini sarasvati naumi nityam.

Seated on the clear seat heaped with white lotuses, your lovely form wrapped in white, your face sweet as an opening white lotus, giver of learning — Saraswati, I bow to you daily.

9

mātastvadīyapadapaṅkajabhaktiyuktā ye tvāṁ bhajanti nikhilānaparānvihāya. te nirjaratvamiha yānti kalevareṇa bhūvahnivāyugaganāmbuvinirmitena.

Mother — those who hold your lotus feet in love and adore you, letting all others go, become as the devtas even in this body made of earth, fire, air, sky and water.

10

mohāndhakārabharite hr̥daye madīye mātaḥ sadaiva kuru vāsamudārabhāve. svīyākhilāvayavanirmalasuprabhābhiḥ śīghraṁ vināśaya manogatamandhakāram.

Generous Mother — dwell always in my heart, which is full of the dark of delusion, and with the clear light of your every limb quickly undo the darkness in my mind.

11

Devi, it is by your power that Brahma makes the world, Vishnu keeps it and Shiva unmakes it; you whose power is plain — without your grace not one of the three could do his own work at all.

12

lakṣmīrmedhā dharā puṣṭirgaurī tuṣṭiḥ prabhā dhr̥tiḥ. etābhiḥ pāhi tanubhiraṣṭābhirmāṁ sarasvati.

Saraswati — keep me with these eight forms of yours: Lakshmi, Medha, Dhara, Pushti, Gauri, Tushti, Prabha, Dhriti.

13

sarasvatyai namo nityaṁ bhadrakālyai namo namaḥ. vedavedāntavedāṅgavidyāsthānebhya eva ca.

Salutation always to Saraswati, salutation to Bhadrakali, and to the Veda, the Vedanta, the Vedangas and every seat of learning.

14

sarasvati mahābhāge vidye kamalalocane. vidyārūpe viśālākṣi vidyāṁ dehi namo'stu te.

Saraswati, greatly blessed, learning itself, lotus-eyed — you whose form is knowledge, wide of eye, give me learning; my salutation to you.

15

yadakṣaraṁ padaṁ bhraṣṭaṁ mātrāhīnaṁ ca yadbhavet. tatsarvaṁ kṣamyatāṁ devi prasīda parameśvari.

Devi — whatever letter, word or measure has been dropped, forgive it all; be pleased with me, supreme one.
