janak janani pad kamal raj, nij mastak par dhaari. bandaun maatu sarasvatee, buddhi bal de daataari.

Placing the dust of my parents' lotus feet upon my head, I bow to Mother Saraswati, the bestower of intellect and strength.

poorn jagat men vyaapt tav, mahimaa amit anantu. raamasaagar ke paap ko, maatu tuhee ab hantu.

Your infinite and immeasurable glory pervades the entire universe; O Mother, destroy now the sins of your humble servant Ramsagar.

jay shree sakal buddhi balaraasee. jay sarvajn amar avinaasee.

Glory to you, the auspicious treasury of all wisdom and strength; glory to the all-knowing, immortal, and imperishable Mother.

jay jay jay veenaakar dhaaree. karatee sadaa suhans savaaree.

All glories to the Devi who holds the veena in her hands and always rides upon a graceful white swan.

roop chaturbhujadhaaree maataa. sakal vishv andar vikhyaataa.

O Mother of four-armed form, you are renowned throughout the entire universe.

jag men paap buddhi jab hotee. jabahi dharm kee pheekee jyotee.

Whenever sinful inclinations arise across the world and the light of righteousness grows faint,

tabahi maatu le nij avataaraa. paap heen karatee mahi taaraa.

Then, O Mother, you manifest your incarnation and liberate the earth by cleansing it of sins.

baalmeeki jee the baham jnaanee. tav prasaad jaanai sansaaraa.

Through your divine grace alone, the entire world came to know sage Valmiki as an enlightened seer.

raamaayan jo rache banaaee. aadi kavee kee padavee paaee.

He composed the epic Ramayana and rightfully attained the celebrated title of the first poet.

kaalidaas jo bhaye vikhyaataa. teree kripaa drishti se maataa.

The great poet Kalidasa attained renown solely through the compassionate glance of your grace, O Mother.

tulasee soor aadi viddhaanaa. bhaye aur jo jnaanee naanaa.

Tulsidas, Surdas, and numerous other learned masters attained supreme wisdom by your benevolence.

tinhahin n aur raheu avalambaa. keval kripaa aapakee ambaa.

They had no other refuge or support in the world except your divine grace, O Mother Amba.

karahu kripaa soi maatu bhavaanee. dukhit deen nij daasahi jaanee.

Bestow that very same compassionate grace, Mother Bhavani, recognizing this afflicted and humble soul as your servant.

putr karai aparaadh bahootaa. tehi n dharai chit sundar maataa.

A child may commit many errors and faults, yet a gracious mother never holds them against him in her heart.

raakhu laaj jananee ab meree. vinay karoon bahu bhaanti ghaneree.

Protect my honour now, O Mother, as I offer abundant humble prayers unto you in diverse ways.

main anaath teree avalanbaa. kripaa karau jay jay jagadanbaa.

I am destitute and dependent upon you alone; shower your mercy, all victory to the Mother of the Universe.

madhukaitabh jo ati balavaanaa. baahuyuddh vishnoo te thaanaa.

The immensely mighty asuras Madhu and Kaitabha waged a fierce hand-to-hand duel against Vishnu ji.

samar hajaar paanch men ghoraa. phir bhee mukh unase nahin moraa.

The terrible battle raged for five thousand years, yet Vishnu did not turn his face away from them.

maatu sahaay bhaee tehi kaalaa. buddhi vipareet karee khalahaalaa.

At that critical moment, O Mother, you came to his aid by confusing and misdirecting the intellect of those evil asuras.

tehi te mrityu bhaee khal keree. puravahu maatu manorath meree.

Consequently, the demise of those wicked beings was brought about; O Mother, please fulfil my heartfelt yearning.

chand mund jo the vikhyaataa. chhan mahun sanhaareu tehi maataa.

The notoriously fierce asuras Chanda and Munda were annihilated by you in an instant, O Mother.

raktabeej se samarath paapee. sur-muni hriday dharaa sab kaanpee.

Before the formidable sinner Raktabija, the hearts of gods, ascetics, and the whole earth trembled in terror.

kaateu sir jim kadalee khambaa. baar baar binavaun jagadanbaa.

You severed his heads effortlessly as though felling banana stems; again and again I bow in prayer to you, Jagadamba.

jag prasiddh jo shunbh nishunbhaa. chhin men badhe taahi too ambaa.

The world-famous asura brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha were slain by you in a mere moment, O Amba.

bharat-maatu budhi phereu jaaee. raamachandr banavaas karaaee.

You went and influenced the mind of Bharata's mother Kaikeyi, thereby causing the forest exile of Ram ji.

ehi vidhi raavan vadh tum keenhaa. sur nar muni sab kahun sukh deenhaa.

In this manner you facilitated the destruction of Ravana and conferred delight and relief upon gods, humans, and sages.

ko samarath tav yash gun gaanaa. nigam anaadi anant bakhaanaa.

Who has the capacity to fully praise your glorious virtues when the eternal and beginningless Vedas celebrate them endlessly?

vishnu roodr aj sakahin n maaree. jinakee ho tum rakshaakaaree.

Even Vishnu, Rudra, or Brahma cannot slay anyone to whom you grant your divine protection.

rakt dantikaa aur shataakshee. naam apaar hai daanav bhakshee.

You are celebrated as Raktadantika and Shatakshi, possessing countless names as the consumer of demonic forces.

durgam kaaj dharaa par keenhaa. durgaa naam sakal jag leenhaa.

Because you accomplished impossible tasks upon the earth, the entire world took up and praised your holy name Durga.

durg aadi haranee too maataa. kripaa karahu jab jab sukhadaataa.

O Mother who dispels all distress, misfortunes, and fear, bestow your benevolence whenever you grant joy to your own.

nrip kopit jo maaran chaahai. kaanan men ghere mrig naahai.

Even if an enraged ruler seeks one's destruction, or savage beasts surround a person in the dense forest,

saagar madhy pot ke bhange. ati toophaan nahin kooo sange.

Or if one's ship shatters in the midst of the deep ocean and no companion remains amidst a fierce storm,

bhoot pret baadhaa yaa duhkh men. ho daridr athavaa sankat men.

Or during troubles from evil spirits, severe sorrow, extreme poverty, or dire calamities,

naam jape mangal sab hoee. sanshay isamen karai n koee.

All manner of auspiciousness ensues simply by reciting your holy name; let no one doubt this truth.

putraheen jo aatur bhaaee. sabai chhaandi poojen ehi maaee.

Anyone who is childless and deeply distressed should set aside all other anxieties and devotedly offer puja to this Divine Mother.

karai paath nit yah chaaleesaa. hoy putr sundar gun eesaa.

Whoever recites this Chalisa daily is blessed with a handsome and virtuous child possessing noble qualities.

dhoopaadik naivedy chadhaavai. sankat rahit avashy ho jaavai.

Whoever devoutly offers incense and sacred food offerings surely becomes freed from all crises.

bhakti maatu kee karai hameshaa. nikat n aavai taahi kaleshaa.

Whoever continuously maintains loving devotion to the Mother is never approached by afflictions or torment.

bandee paath karen shat baaraa. bandee paash door ho saaraa.

If a captive recites this prayer a hundred times, all fetters of bondage and confinement fall completely away.

karahu kripaa bhavamukti bhavaanee. mo kahan daas sadaa nij jaanee.

O Bhavani, grant your saving grace for final liberation from worldly rebirth, ever regarding me as your devoted servant.

raamasaagar baandhi hetu bhavaanee. keejai kripaa daas nij jaanee.

For untying the worldly bonds of Ramsagar, O Bhavani, bestow your compassionate grace, knowing him as your own servant.

Closing doha

maataa sooraj kaanti tav, andhakaar mam roop. dooban te rakshaa karahu, paroon n main bhav-koop.

O Mother, your radiant splendour is like the luminous sun while my existence is enveloped in darkness; save me from drowning so that I never fall into the deep well of worldly illusion.

bal buddhi vidyaa dehun mohi, sunahu sarasvati maatu. adham raamasaagarahin tum, aashray deu punaatu.

Heed my plea, Mother Saraswati, and grant me strength, intellect, and sacred learning, offering purifying shelter to the fallen Ramsagar.
