On the fifth day of Navratri, Marathi homes keep Lalita Devi's Upang Lalita vrat: the lid of a karanda (करंड्याचे झाकण) is set in a makhar as the Devi and given forty-eight durva, and the day's one meal waits for the night's arghya and katha. In the katha the Devi Herself tells Gopati to ask for the lid of Her casket and do puja to it, and the vrat is kept for learning, a marriage, wealth and children.
The vrat
Nakta: the day's one meal is taken at night, after the arghya to the Devi. The Skanda Purana's text has it after the katha, eaten quietly with the family. The books read name no food to leave out, so keep your house's own rule. Anyone unwell, pregnant, nursing, diabetic or on medicine keeps the puja and eats: the same vrat, kept sensibly.
