Opening dohas

1

బంశీ శోభిత కర మధుర నీల జలద తన శ్యామ।

His sweet hands are adorned with a flute, and his dark body is like a blue lotus.

అరుణ అధర జను బిమ్బఫల నయన కమల అభిరామ॥

His lips are red like the bimba fruit, and his eyes are beautiful like lotuses.

పూర్ణ ఇన్ద్ర అరవిన్ద ముఖ పీతామ్బర శుభ సాజ।

His face is like the full moon and a blooming lotus, and he is auspiciously adorned in yellow silk.

జయ మనమోహన మదన ఛవి కృష్ణచన్ద్ర మహారాజ॥

Glory to the mind-enchanting King Krishnachandra, whose beauty surpasses that of Cupid.

Chaupai

జయ యదునందన జయ జగవందన।
జయ వసుదేవ దేవకీ నన్దన॥

Glory to the son of Yadu who is revered by the world; glory to the son of Vasudeva and Devaki.

జయ యశుదా సుత నన్ద దులారే।
జయ ప్రభు భక్తన కే దృగ తారే॥

Glory to the son of Yashoda and the darling of Nanda; glory to Krishna ji who is the star of their people's eyes.

జయ నటనాగర నాగ నథఇయా।
కృష్ణ కన్హైయా ధేను చరైయా॥

Glory to the supreme dancer who subdued the Kaliya serpent; O Krishna Kanhaiya, the herder of cows.

పుని నఖ పర ప్రభు గిరివర ధారో।
ఆఓ దీనన కష్ట నివారో॥

O Krishna ji, You held the great mountain on Your fingernail; please come and remove the sorrows of the destitute.

వంశీ మధుర అధర ధరి టేరౌ।
హోవే పూర్ణ మనోరథ మేరో॥

Place the sweet flute to Your lips and play it, so that my desires may be completely fulfilled.

ఆఓ హరి పుని మాఖన చాఖో।
ఆజ లాజ భక్తన కీ రాఖో॥

Come, O Hari, and taste the butter once again; protect the honour of your own today.

గోల కపోల, చిబుక అరుణారే।
మృదు ముస్కాన మోహినీ డారే॥

Your cheeks are round, Your chin is reddish, and Your gentle smile casts a spell of enchantment.

రంజిత రాజివ నయన విశాలా।
మోర ముకుట వైజన్తీమాలా॥

Your large eyes are like beautiful lotuses, and You wear a peacock-feather crown and the Vaijayanti garland.

కుండల శ్రవణ, పీత పట ఆఛే।
కటి కింకిణీ కాఛన కాఛే॥

Earrings adorn Your ears, You wear fine yellow garments, and a waistband of tinkling bells is tied around Your waist.

నీల జలజ సున్దర తను సోహే।
ఛబి లఖి, సుర నర ముని మన మోహే॥

Your beautiful body shines like a blue lotus; seeing Your murti, the minds of gods, men, and sages are captivated.

11

మస్తక తిలక అలక ఘుఁఘరాలే।
ఆఓ కృష్ణ బాంసురీ వాలే॥

Your forehead bears a tilak and Your hair is curly; please come, O Krishna, the flute-player.

12

కరి పయ పాన, పూతనహి తార్యో।
అకా బకా కాగాసుర మార్యో॥

By drinking her milk, You liberated Putana; You also killed the asuras Aghasura, Bakasura, and Kagasura.

13

మధువన జలత అగిన జబ జ్వాలా।
భై శీతల లఖతహిం నందలాలా॥

When the Madhuvan forest was burning with fierce flames, it became cool the moment it saw You, O Nandalaal.

14

సురపతి జబ బ్రజ చఢ్యో రిసాఈ।
మూసర ధార వారి వర్షాఈ॥

When the king of gods angrily attacked Braj, he poured down torrential rain.

15

లగత లగత వ్రజ చహన బహాయో।
గోవర్ధన నఖ ధారి బచాయో॥

When Braj was on the verge of being washed away, You saved it by lifting the Govardhan mountain on Your nail.

16

లఖి యసుదా మన భ్రమ అధికాఈ।
ముఖ మంహ చౌదహ భువన దిఖాఈ॥

Seeing mother Yashoda's mind filled with great confusion, You showed her the fourteen worlds within Your mouth.

17

దుష్ట కంస అతి ఉధమ మచాయో।
కోటి కమల జబ ఫూల మంగాయో॥

When the wicked Kamsa caused great turmoil, he demanded ten million lotus flowers.

18

నాథి కాలియహిం తబ తుమ లీన్హేం।
చరణ చిహ్న దై నిర్భయ కీన్హేం॥

Then You subdued the Kaliya serpent, leaving Your footprints on him and making him fearless.

19

కరి గోపిన సంగ రాస విలాసా।
సబకీ పూరణ కరీ అభిలాషా॥

Performing the joyful Raas dance with the Gopis, You fulfilled the desires of everyone.

20

కేతిక మహా అసుర సంహార్యో।
కంసహి కేస పకడి దై మార్యో॥

You destroyed countless great asuras, and You killed Kamsa by grabbing him by the hair.

21

మాత పితా కీ బన్ది ఛుడాఈ।
ఉగ్రసేన కహఁ రాజ దిలాఈ॥

You freed Your parents from captivity and restored the kingdom to Ugrasena.

22

మహి సే మృతక ఛహోం సుత లాయో।
మాతు దేవకీ శోక మిటాయో॥

You brought back the six dead sons from the earth, thereby erasing mother Devaki's grief.

23

భౌమాసుర ముర దైత్య సంహారీ।
లాయే షట దశ సహసకుమారీ॥

Slaying the asuras Bhaumasura and Mura, You rescued the sixteen thousand princesses.

24

దై భీమహి తృణ చీర సహారా।
జరాసిన్ధు రాక్షస కహం మారా॥

By tearing a blade of grass to give a hint to Bhima, You caused the death of the asura Jarasandha.

25

అసుర బకాసుర ఆదిక మార్యో।
భక్తన కే తబ కష్ట నివార్యో॥

You killed asuras like Bakasura and others, thereby removing the troubles of your own.

26

దీన సుదామా కే దుఃఖ టార్యో।
తందుల తీన మూంఠ ముఖ డార్యో॥

You removed the sorrow of poor Sudama by tossing three handfuls of his dry rice into Your mouth.

27

ప్రేమ కే సాగ విదుర ఘర మాఁగే।
దుర్యోధన కే మేవా త్యాగే॥

You lovingly asked for simple greens at Vidura's house, rejecting the rich dry fruits of Duryodhana.

లఖీ ప్రేమ కీ మహిమా భారీ।
ఐసే శ్యామ దీన హితకారీ॥

Seeing the immense glory of love, such is Shyam ji, the benefactor of the destitute.

భారత కే పారథ రథ హాఁకే।
లియే చక్ర కర నహిం బల థాకే॥

You drove the chariot of Partha in the Mahabharata war, and holding the discus in Your hand, Your strength never tired.

30

నిజ గీతా కే జ్ఞాన సునాఏ।
భక్తన హృదయ సుధా వర్షాఏ॥

You imparted the wisdom of Your Gita, raining nectar into the hearts of your own.

31

మీరా థీ ఐసీ మతవాలీ।
విష పీ గఈ బజాకర తాలీ॥

Mirabai was so intoxicated with devotion that she drank poison while clapping her hands in joy.

32

రాణా భేజా సాఁప పిటారీ।
శాలీగ్రామ బనే బనవారీ॥

When the Rana sent a basket with a snake, You, O Banvari, turned it into a Shaligram stone.

33

నిజ మాయా తుమ విధిహి దిఖాయో।
ఉర తే సంశయ సకల మిటాయో॥

You revealed Your divine illusion to Brahma, erasing all doubts from his heart.

34

తబ శత నిన్దా కరి తత్కాలా।
జీవన ముక్త భయో శిశుపాలా॥

When Shishupala immediately hurled a hundred insults at You, he was liberated from life by You.

35

జబహిం ద్రౌపదీ టేర లగాఈ।
దీనానాథ లాజ అబ జాఈ॥

When Draupadi called out to You, crying, "O lord of the destitute, my honour is now being lost!"

36

తురతహి వసన బనే నందలాలా।
బఢే చీర భై అరి ముఁహ కాలా॥

Instantly, You, O Nandalaal, became her garments; the cloth kept extending, and the enemies' faces were blackened in defeat.

37

అస అనాథ కే నాథ కన్హఇయా।
డూబత భంవర బచావత నైయా॥

Such is Kanhaiya, the lord of the orphans, who saves the sinking boat from the whirlpool.

38

సున్దరదాస ఆస ఉర ధారీ।
దయా దృష్టి కీజై బనవారీ॥

Sundardas holds this hope in his heart: please cast a glance of compassion upon me, O Banvari.

39

నాథ సకల మమ కుమతి నివారో।
క్షమహు బేగి అపరాధ హమారో॥

O Krishna ji, remove all my wicked thoughts and quickly forgive my offenses.

40

ఖోలో పట అబ దర్శన దీజై।
బోలో కృష్ణ కన్హఇయా కీ జై॥

Open the doors now and grant me Your divine vision; everyone say, "Glory to Krishna Kanhaiya!"

Closing doha

యహ చాలీసా కృష్ణ కా పాఠ కరై ఉర ధారి।

Whoever recites this Chalisa of Krishna, holding it in their heart,

అష్ట సిద్ధి నవనిధి ఫల లహై పదారథ చారి॥

Will attain the eight perfections, the nine treasures, and the four ultimate goals of life.
