ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
શક્રાદયઃ સુરગણા નિહતેઽતિવીર્યે તસ્મિન્દુરાત્મનિ સુરારિબલે ચ દેવ્યા ।
તાં તુષ્ટુવુઃ પ્રણતિનમ્રશિરોધરાંસા વાગ્ભિઃ પ્રહર્ષપુલકોદ્ગમચારુદેહાઃ॥
When that most valiant but evil-natured Mahishasura and the army of that foe of the devas were destroyed by the Devi, Indra and the hosts of devas uttered their words of praise, their necks and shoulders reverently bent, and bodies rendered beautiful with horripilation and exultation.
દેવ્યા યયા તતમિદં જગદાત્મશક્ત્યા નિશ્શેષદેવગણશક્તિસમૂહમૂર્ત્યા ।
તામમ્બિકામખિલદેવમહર્ષિપૂજ્યાં ભક્ત્યા નતાઃ સ્મ વિદધાતુ શુભાનિ સા નઃ॥
To that Ambika who is honoured by all devas and sages and pervades this world by her power and who is the embodiment of the entire powers of all the hosts of devas, we bow in devotion. May she grant us what is good!
યસ્યાઃ પ્રભાવમતુલં ભગવાનનન્તો બ્રહ્મા હરશ્ચ ન હિ વક્તુમલં બલં ચ ।
સા ચણ્ડિકાખિલજગત્પરિપાલનાય નાશાય ચાશુભભયસ્ય મતિં કરોતુ॥
May Chandika, whose incomparable greatness and power Bhagavan Vishnu, Brahma and Hara are unable to describe, bestow her mind on protecting the entire world and on destroying the fear of evil.
યા શ્રીઃ સ્વયં સુકૃતિનાં ભવનેષ્વલક્ષ્મીઃ પાપાત્મનાં કૃતધિયાં હૃદયેષુ બુદ્ધિઃ ।
શ્રદ્ધા સતાં કુલજનપ્રભવસ્ય લજ્જા તાં ત્વાં નતાઃ સ્મ પરિપાલય દેવિ વિશ્વમ્॥
O Devi, we bow before you, who are yourself prosperity in the dwellings of the virtuous, ill-fortune in those of the vicious, intelligence in the hearts of the learned, faith in the hearts of the good, and modesty in the hearts of the high-born. May you protect the universe!
કિં વર્ણયામ તવ રૂપમચિન્ત્યમેતત્ કિં ચાતિવીર્યમસુરક્ષયકારિ ભૂરિ ।
કિં ચાહવેષુ ચરિતાનિ તવાદ્ભુતાનિ સર્વેષુ દેવ્યસુરદેવગણાદિકેષુ॥
O Devi, how can we describe your inconceivable form, or your abundant surpassing valour that destroys the asuras, or your wonderful feats displayed in battles among all the hosts of gods, asuras and others?
હેતુઃ સમસ્તજગતાં ત્રિગુણાપિ દોષૈર્ ન જ્ઞાયસે હરિહરાદિભિરપ્યપારા ।
સર્વાશ્રયાખિલમિદં જગદંશભૂતમ્ અવ્યાકૃતા હિ પરમા પ્રકૃતિસ્ત્વમાદ્યા॥
You are the origin of all the worlds! Though you are possessed of the three gunas you are not known to have any of their attendant defects! You are incomprehensible even to Vishnu, Shiva and others! You are the resort of all! This entire world is composed of an infinitesimal portion of yourself! You are verily the supreme primordial Prakriti untransformed.
યસ્યાઃ સમસ્તસુરતા સમુદીરણેન તૃપ્તિં પ્રયાતિ સકલેષુ મખેષુ દેવિ ।
સ્વાહાસિ વૈ પિતૃગણસ્ય ચ તૃપ્તિહેતુર્ ઉચ્ચાર્યસે ત્વમત એવ જનૈઃ સ્વધા ચ॥
O Devi, you are Svaha at whose utterance the whole assemblage of gods attains satisfaction in all the sacrifices. You are the Svadha which gives satisfaction to the manes. Therefore you are recited by people.
યા મુક્તિહેતુરવિચિન્ત્યમહાવ્રતા ત્વમ્ અભ્યસ્યસે સુનિયતેન્દ્રિયતત્ત્વસારૈઃ ।
મોક્ષાર્થિભિર્મુનિભિરસ્તસમસ્તદોષૈર્ વિદ્યાસિ સા ભગવતી પરમા હિ દેવિ॥
O Devi, you are the supreme knowledge, the cause of liberation, and of inconceivable great penance. You are cultivated by sages desiring liberation, whose senses are well restrained, who are devoted to the reality, and have shed all their blemishes.
શબ્દાત્મિકા સુવિમલર્ગ્યજુષાં નિધાનમ્ ઉદ્ગીથરમ્યપદપાઠવતાં ચ સામ્નામ્ ।
દેવી ત્રયી ભગવતી ભવભાવનાય વાર્તા ચ સર્વજગતાં પરમાર્તિહન્ત્રી॥
You are the soul of Brahman. You are the repository of the very pure Rig-veda and Yajus stotra, and of Samans, the recital of whose words is beautiful with the Udgitha! You are Bhagavati embodying the three Vedas. And you are the sustenance whereby life is maintained. You are the supreme destroyer of the pain of all the worlds.
મેધાસિ દેવિ વિદિતાખિલશાસ્ત્રસારા દુર્ગાસિ દુર્ગભવસાગરનૌરસઙ્ગા ।
શ્રીઃ કૈટભારિહૃદયૈકકૃતાધિવાસા ગૌરી ત્વમેવ શશિમૌલિકૃતપ્રતિષ્ઠા॥
O Devi, you are the Intellect, by which the essence of all scriptures is comprehended. You are Durga, the boat that takes men across the difficult ocean of worldly existence, devoid of attachments. You are Shri, who has invariably taken her abode in the heart of Vishnu. You are indeed Gauri, who has established herself with Shiva.
ઈષત્સહાસમમલં પરિપૂર્ણચન્દ્ર બિમ્બાનુકારિ કનકોત્તમકાન્તિકાન્તમ્ ।
અત્યદ્ભુતં પ્રહૃતમાત્તરુષા તથાપિ વક્ત્રં વિલોક્ય સહસા મહિષેણ સદ્યઃ॥
Gently smiling, pure, resembling the full moon's orb, beautiful like the splendour of excellent gold was your face! Yet it was very strange that, being swayed by anger, Mahishasura suddenly struck your face when he saw it.
દૃષ્ટ્વા તુ દેવિ કુપિતં ભ્રુકુટીકરાલમ્ ઉદ્યચ્છશાઙ્કસદૃશચ્છવિ યન્ન સદ્યઃ ।
પ્રાણાન્મુમોચ મહિષસ્તદતીવ ચિત્રં કૈર્જીવ્યતે હિ કુપિતાન્તકદર્શનેન॥
Greatly strange it is that when Mahishasura saw your wrathful face, O Devi, terrible with its frowns and red in hue like the rising moon, he did not at once give up his life! For, who can live after beholding the enraged Destroyer?
દેવિ પ્રસીદ પરમા ભવતી ભવાય સદ્યો વિનાશયસિ કોપવતી કુલાનિ ।
વિજ્ઞાતમેતદધુનૈવ યદસ્તમેતન્ નીતં બલં સુવિપુલં મહિષાસુરસ્ય॥
O Devi, be propitious. You are Supreme. If enraged, you forthwith destroy the asura families for the welfare of the world. This was known this very moment when the vast forces of Mahishasura were brought to their end.
તે સમ્મતા જનપદેષુ ધનાનિ તેષાં તેષાં યશાંસિ ન ચ સીદતિ ધર્મવર્ગઃ ।
ધન્યાસ્ત એવ નિભૃતાત્મજભૃત્યદારા યેષાં સદાભ્યુદયદા ભવતી પ્રસન્ના॥
You who are always a bestower of prosperity, with whom you are well pleased, those fortunate ones are indeed highly honoured in the country, theirs are riches, theirs are glories, and their acts of righteousness perish not; they are indeed blessed and possessed of devoted children, servants and wives.
ધર્મ્યાણિ દેવિ સકલાનિ સદૈવ કર્માણ્યત્યાદૃતઃ પ્રતિદિનં સુકૃતી કરોતિ ।
સ્વર્ગં પ્રયાતિ ચ તતો ભવતીપ્રસાદાલ્ લોકત્રયેઽપિ ફલદા નનુ દેવિ તેન॥
By your grace, O Devi, the blessed individual does daily all righteous acts with utmost care and thereby goes to heaven. Are you not, therefore O Devi, the bestower of reward in all the three worlds?
દુર્ગે સ્મૃતા હરસિ ભીતિમ્ અશેષજન્તોઃ સ્વસ્થૈઃ સ્મૃતા મતિમતીવ શુભાં દદાસિ ।
દારિદ્ર્યદુઃખભયહારિણિ કા ત્વદન્યા સર્વોપકારકરણાય સદાર્દ્રચિત્તા॥
When called to mind in a difficult pass, you remove fear for every person. When called to mind by those in happiness, you bestow a mind still further pious. Which devi but you, O Dispeller of poverty, pain and fear, has an ever sympathetic heart for helping everyone?
એભિર્હતૈર્જગદુપૈતિ સુખં તથૈતે કુર્વન્તુ નામ નરકાય ચિરાય પાપમ્ ।
સઙ્ગ્રામમૃત્યુમધિગમ્ય દિવં પ્રયાન્તુ મત્વેતિ નૂનમહિતાન્ વિનિહંસિ દેવિ॥
The world attains happiness by the killing of these foes and though these asuras have committed sins to keep them long in hell, let them reach heaven by meeting death eventually at the battle with me - thinking thus, that you, O Devi, certainly destroy our enemies.
દૃષ્ટ્વૈવ કિં ન ભવતી પ્રકરોતિ ભસ્મ સર્વાસુરાનરિષુ યત્પ્રહિણોષિ શસ્ત્રમ્ ।
લોકાન્ પ્રયાન્તુ રિપવોઽપિ હિ શસ્ત્રપૂતા ઇત્થં મતિર્ભવતિ તેષ્વપિ તેઽતિસાધ્વી॥
Don't you reduce to ashes all asuras by mere sight? But you direct your weapons against them so that even the enemies, purified by the missiles, may attain the heavenly worlds. Such is your most kindly intention towards them.
ખડ્ગપ્રભાનિકરવિસ્ફુરણૈસ્તથોગ્રૈઃ શૂલાગ્રકાન્તિનિવહેન દૃશોઽસુરાણામ્ ।
યન્નાગતા વિલયમંશુમદિન્દુખણ્ડ યોગ્યાનનં તવ વિલોકયતાં તદેતત્॥
If the eyes of the asuras had not been put out by the terrible flashes of the mass of light issuing from your sword or by the copious lustre of your spearhead, it is because they saw also your face resembling a portion of the moon, giving out cool rays.
દુર્વૃત્તવૃત્તશમનં તવ દેવિ શીલં રૂપં તથૈતદવિચિન્ત્યમતુલ્યમન્યૈઃ ।
વીર્યં ચ હન્તૃ હૃતદેવપરાક્રમાણાં વૈરિષ્વપિ પ્રકટિતૈવ દયા ત્વયેત્થમ્॥
O Devi, your nature is to subdue the conduct of the wicked; this your peerless beauty is inconceivable for others; your power destroys those who have robbed the devas of their prowess, and you have thus manifested your compassion even towards the enemies.
કેનોપમા ભવતુ તેઽસ્ય પરાક્રમસ્ય રૂપં ચ શત્રુભયકાર્યતિહારિ કુત્ર ।
ચિત્તે કૃપા સમરનિષ્ઠુરતા ચ દૃષ્ટા ત્વય્યેવ દેવિ વરદે ભુવનત્રયેઽપિ॥
What is your prowess to be compared to? Where can one find this beauty (of yours) most charming, (yet) striking fear in enemies? Compassion in heart and relentlessness in battle are seen, O Devi, O Bestower of boons, only in you in all the three worlds.
ત્રૈલોક્યમેતદખિલં રિપુનાશનેન ત્રાતં ત્વયા સમરમૂર્ધનિ તેઽપિ હત્વા ।
નીતા દિવં રિપુગણા ભયમપ્યપાસ્તમસ્માકમુન્મદસુરારિભવં નમસ્તે॥
Through the destruction of the enemies all these three worlds have been saved by you. Having killed them in the battle-front, you have led even those hosts of enemies to heaven, and you have dispelled our fear from the frenzied enemies of the devas. Salutation to you!
શૂલેન પાહિ નો દેવિ પાહિ ખડ્ગેન ચામ્બિકે ।
ઘણ્ટાસ્વનેન નઃ પાહિ ચાપજ્યાનિઃસ્વનેન ચ॥
O Devi, protect us with your spear. O Ambika, protect us with your sword, protect us by the sound of your bell and by the twang of your bow-string.
પ્રાચ્યાં રક્ષ પ્રતીચ્યાં ચ ચણ્ડિકે રક્ષ દક્ષિણે ।
ભ્રામણેનાત્મશૂલસ્ય ઉત્તરસ્યાં તથેશ્વરિ॥
O Chandika, guard us in the east, in the west, in the north and in the south by the brandishing of your spear, O Iswari!
સૌમ્યાનિ યાનિ રૂપાણિ ત્રૈલોક્યે વિચરન્તિ તે ।
યાનિ ચાત્યર્થઘોરાણિ તૈ રક્ષાસ્માંસ્તથા ભુવમ્॥
Protect us and the earth with those lovely forms of yours moving about in the three worlds, as also with your exceptionally terrible forms.
ખડ્ગશૂલગદાદીનિ યાનિ ચાસ્ત્રાણિ તેઽમ્બિકે ।
કરપલ્લવસઙ્ગીનિ તૈરસ્માન્ રક્ષ સર્વતઃ॥
O Ambika, protect us on every side with your sword, spear and club and whatever other weapons your sprout-like (soft) hand has touched.
ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
એવં સ્તુતા સુરૈર્દિવ્યૈઃ કુસુમૈર્નન્દનોદ્ભવૈઃ ।
અર્ચિતા જગતાં ધાત્રી તથા ગન્ધાનુલેપનૈઃ॥
Thus the supporter of the worlds was praised by the devas, given puja with celestial flowers that blossomed in Nandana and with perfumes and unguents;
ભક્ત્યા સમસ્તૈસ્ત્રિદશૈર્દિવ્યૈર્ધૂપૈઃ સુધૂપિતા ।
પ્રાહ પ્રસાદસુમુખી સમસ્તાન્ પ્રણતાન્ સુરાન્॥
and with devotion all of them offered her heavenly incense. Benignly serene in countenance she spoke to all obeisant devas.
દેવ્યુવાચ॥
The Devi said:
વ્રિયતાં ત્રિદશાઃ સર્વે યદસ્મત્તોઽભિવાઞ્છિતમ્॥
Choose all of you, O devas, whatever you desire of me.
દેવા ઊચુઃ॥
The devas said:
ભગવત્યા કૃતં સર્વં ન કિઞ્ચિદવશિષ્યતે ।
યદયં નિહતઃ શત્રુરસ્માકં મહિષાસુરઃ॥
Since our enemy, this Mahishasura, has been slain by Bhagavati (i.e. you) everything has been accomplished, and nothing remains to be done.
યદિ ચાપિ વરો દેયસ્ત્વયાસ્માકં મહેશ્વરિ ।
સંસ્મૃતા સંસ્મૃતા ત્વં નો હિંસેથાઃ પરમાપદઃ॥
And if a boon is to be granted to us by you, O Mahesvari, whenever we think of you again, destroy our direct calamities.
યશ્ચ મર્ત્યઃ સ્તવૈરેભિસ્ત્વાં સ્તોષ્યત્યમલાનને ।
તસ્ય વિત્તર્ધિવિભવૈર્ધનદારાદિસમ્પદામ્॥
O Mother of spotless countenance, and whatever mortal shall praise you with these stotra,
વૃદ્ધયેઽસ્મત્પ્રસન્ના ત્વં ભવેથાઃ સર્વદામ્બિકે॥
may you, who have become gracious towards us, be also propitious to him for his increase in wealth, wife, and other prosperities.
ઋષિરુવાચ॥
The Rishi said:
ઇતિ પ્રસાદિતા દેવૈર્જગતોઽર્થે તથાઽઽત્મનઃ ।
તથેત્યુક્ત્વા ભદ્રકાલી બભૂવાન્તર્હિતા નૃપ॥
O King, being thus propitiated by the devas for the sake of the world and for their own sake, Bhadrakali said, 'Be it so' and vanished from sight.
ઇત્યેતત્કથિતં ભૂપ સમ્ભૂતા સા યથા પુરા ।
દેવી દેવશરીરેભ્યો જગત્ત્રયહિતૈષિણી॥
Thus have I narrated, O King, how the Devi who desires the good of all the three worlds made her appearance of yore out of the bodies of the devas.
પુનશ્ચ ગૌરીદેહાત્સા સમુદ્ભૂતા યથાભવત્।
વધાય દુષ્ટદૈત્યાનાં તથા શુમ્ભનિશુમ્ભયોઃ॥
And again how she emerged from the body of Gauri for the slaying of the wicked asuras as well as Sumbha and Nisumbha,
રક્ષણાય ચ લોકાનાં દેવાનામુપકારિણી ।
તચ્છૃણુષ્વ મયાખ્યાતં યથાવત્કથયામિ તે॥
and for the protection of the worlds, as a benefactress of the devas, listen as I relate it. I shall tell it to you exactly as it happened.
