ఋషిరువాచ ॥
౧ ॥
The Rishi said:
ఏతత్తే కథితం భూప దేవీమాహాత్మ్యముత్తమమ్ ।
ఏవంప్రభావా సా దేవీ యయేదం ధార్యతే జగత్ ॥
౨ ॥
O King, I have told you this highest telling of the Devi's glory. Such is the power of the Devi by whom this world is upheld.
విద్యా తథైవ క్రియతే భగవద్విష్ణుమాయయా ।
తయా త్వమేష వైశ్యశ్చ తథైవాన్యే వివేకినః ॥
౩ ॥
Knowledge too is brought about by Her, the maya of Bhagavan Vishnu. By Her you, this merchant and others who discern…
మోహ్యన్తే మోహితాశ్చైవ మోహమేష్యన్తి చాపరే ।
తాముపైహి మహారాజ శరణం పరమేశ్వరీమ్ ॥
౪ ॥
…are deluded, have been deluded, and others yet will be. Go to Her for refuge, great King, to the Supreme Ruler.
ఆరాధితా సైవ నృణాం భోగస్వర్గాపవర్గదా ॥
౫ ॥
When She is adored, She alone gives people enjoyment, heaven and liberation.
మార్కణ్డేయ ఉవాచ ॥
౬ ॥
Markandeya said:
ఇతి తస్య వచః శ్రుత్వా సురథః స నరాధిపః ॥
౭ ॥
Hearing these words of the Rishi, Suratha, ruler of men…
ప్రణిపత్య మహాభాగం తమృషిం శంసితవ్రతమ్ ।
నిర్విణ్ణోఽతిమమత్వేన రాజ్యాపహరణేన చ ॥
౮ ॥
…bowed low before that great Rishi, whose vrats are praised. Weary of the world through his deep attachment and the loss of his kingdom…
జగామ సద్యస్తపసే స చ వైశ్యో మహామునే ।
సన్దర్శనార్థమమ్బాయా నదీపులినసంస్థితః ॥
౯ ॥
…he went at once to practise tapas, O great muni, and so did the merchant; and to see Amba face to face, he stayed on the sandy bank of a river.
స చ వైశ్యస్తపస్తేపే దేవీసూక్తం పరం జపన్ ।
తౌ తస్మిన్ పులినే దేవ్యాః కృత్వా మూర్తిం మహీమయీమ్ ॥
౧౦ ॥
And the merchant practised tapas, saying the supreme Devi Sukta. On that river bank the two of them made a murti of the Devi out of earth…
అర్హణాం చక్రతుస్తస్యాః పుష్పధూపాగ్నితర్పణైః ।
నిరాహారౌ యతాహారౌ తన్మనస్కౌ సమాహితౌ ॥
౧౧ ॥
…and gave Her puja with flowers, incense, fire and offerings of water. Eating little, then nothing at all, their minds on Her alone and wholly collected…
దదతుస్తౌ బలిం చైవ నిజగాత్రాసృగుక్షితమ్ ।
ఏవం సమారాధయతోస్త్రిభిర్వర్షైర్యతాత్మనోః ॥
౧౨ ॥
…they offered Her bali sprinkled with blood from their own bodies. When they had adored Her thus, self-restrained, for three years…
పరితుష్టా జగద్ధాత్రీ ప్రత్యక్షం ప్రాహ చణ్డికా ॥
౧౩ ॥
…Chandika, who upholds the world, was well pleased, and appearing before them, She spoke.
దేవ్యువాచ ॥
౧౪ ॥
The Devi said:
యత్ప్రార్థ్యతే త్వయా భూప త్వయా చ కులనన్దన ।
మత్తస్తత్ప్రాప్యతాం సర్వం పరితుష్టా దదామి తత్ ॥
౧౫ ॥
‘O King, and you, the joy of your family: whatever you ask for, take it all from Me. I am well pleased, and I give it.’
మార్కణ్డేయ ఉవాచ ॥
౧౬ ॥
Markandeya said:
తతో వవ్రే నృపో రాజ్యమవిభ్రంశ్యన్యజన్మని ।
అత్రైవ చ నిజం రాజ్యం హతశత్రుబలం బలాత్ ॥
౧౭ ॥
Then the king asked for a kingdom that would not fall even in another life, and in this very life his own kingdom back, the strength of his enemies broken by force.
సోఽపి వైశ్యస్తతో జ్ఞానం వవ్రే నిర్విణ్ణమానసః ।
మమేత్యహమితి ప్రాజ్ఞః సఙ్గవిచ్యుతికారకమ్ ॥
౧౮ ॥
And the merchant, wise, his mind turned away from the world, asked for the knowledge that ends attachment, the sense of 'mine' and 'I'.
దేవ్యువాచ ॥
౧౯ ॥
The Devi said:
స్వల్పైరహోభిర్నృపతే స్వం రాజ్యం ప్రాప్స్యతే భవాన్ ॥
౨౦ ॥
‘O King, in a few days you will win back your own kingdom.’
హత్వా రిపూనస్ఖలితం తవ తత్ర భవిష్యతి ॥
౨౧ ॥
‘You will slay your enemies, and your rule there will stand unshaken.’
మృతశ్చ భూయః సమ్ప్రాప్య జన్మ దేవాద్వివస్వతః ॥
౨౨ ॥
‘And after death you will be born again of the deva Vivasvan, the Sun…’
సావర్ణికో నామ మనుర్భవాన్ భువి భవిష్యతి ॥
౨౩ ॥
‘…and on earth you will be the Manu named Savarni.’
వైశ్యవర్య త్వయా యశ్చ వరోఽస్మత్తోఽభివాఞ్ఛితః ॥
౨౪ ॥
‘And you, best of merchants, the boon you have wished for from Me…’
తం ప్రయచ్ఛామి సంసిద్ధ్యై తవ జ్ఞానం భవిష్యతి ॥
౨౫ ॥
‘…I grant, for your liberation: true knowledge will be yours.’
మార్కణ్డేయ ఉవాచ ॥
౨౬ ॥
Markandeya said:
ఇతి దత్త్వా తయోర్దేవీ యథాభిలషితం వరమ్ ॥
౨౭ ॥
Having granted each of them the boon they wished for…
బభూవాన్తర్హితా సద్యో భక్త్యా తాభ్యామభిష్టుతా ।
ఏవం దేవ్యా వరం లబ్ధ్వా సురథః క్షత్రియర్షభః ॥
౨౮ ॥
…the Devi vanished at once, as the two of them praised Her in bhakti. And so, having won this boon from the Devi, Suratha, foremost of kshatriyas…
సూర్యాజ్జన్మ సమాసాద్య సావర్ణిర్భవితా మనుః ॥
౨౯ ॥
…will be born of the Sun, and will be the Manu Savarni.
