ઋષિરુવાચ ॥
૧ ॥
The Rishi said:
નિશુમ્ભં નિહતં દૃષ્ટ્વા ભ્રાતરં પ્રાણસમ્મિતમ્ ।
હન્યમાનં બલં ચૈવ શુમ્ભઃ ક્રુદ્ધોઽબ્રવીદ્વચઃ ॥
૨ ॥
Seeing Nishumbha, the brother dear to him as life, slain, and his army being cut down, Shumbha spoke in anger:
બલાવલેપાદ્દુષ્ટે ત્વં મા દુર્ગે ગર્વમાવહ ।
અન્યાસાં બલમાશ્રિત્ય યુદ્ધ્યસે યાતિમાનિની ॥
૩ ॥
‘O Durga, wicked in the pride of Your strength, do not boast. You who are so proud fight by leaning on the strength of others.’
દેવ્યુવાચ ॥
૪ ॥
The Devi said:
એકૈવાહં જગત્યત્ર દ્વિતીયા કા મમાપરા ।
પશ્યૈતા દુષ્ટ મય્યેવ વિશન્ત્યો મદ્વિભૂતયઃ ॥
૫ ॥
‘I am One alone in this world; who else is there besides Me? See, O wicked one: these are My own powers, entering back into Me.’
તતઃ સમસ્તાસ્તા દેવ્યો બ્રહ્માણીપ્રમુખા લયમ્ ।
તસ્યા દેવ્યાસ્તનૌ જગ્મુરેકૈવાસીત્તદામ્બિકા ॥
૬ ॥
Then all those Devis, Brahmani and the rest, were absorbed into the body of that Devi, and Ambika alone remained.
દેવ્યુવાચ ॥
૭ ॥
The Devi said:
અહં વિભૂત્યા બહુભિરિહ રૂપૈર્યદાસ્થિતા ।
તત્સંહૃતં મયૈકૈવ તિષ્ઠામ્યાજૌ સ્થિરો ભવ ॥
૮ ॥
‘The many forms in which I stood here by My power, I have now drawn back into Myself. I stand alone in the battle: now stand firm.’
ઋષિરુવાચ ॥
૯ ॥
The Rishi said:
તતઃ પ્રવવૃતે યુદ્ધં દેવ્યાઃ શુમ્ભસ્ય ચોભયોઃ ।
પશ્યતાં સર્વદેવાનામસુરાણાં ચ દારુણમ્ ॥
૧૦ ॥
Then, as all the gods and the asuras looked on, a terrible battle began between the two, the Devi and Shumbha.
શરવર્ષૈઃ શિતૈઃ શસ્ત્રૈસ્તથા ચાસ્ત્રૈઃ સુદારુણૈઃ ।
તયોર્યુદ્ધમભૂદ્ભૂયઃ સર્વલોકભયઙ્કરમ્ ॥
૧૧ ॥
With showers of arrows, with sharp weapons and most dreadful missiles, their battle grew again, terrifying to all the worlds.
દિવ્યાન્યસ્ત્રાણિ શતશો મુમુચે યાન્યથામ્બિકા ।
બભઞ્જ તાનિ દૈત્યેન્દ્રસ્તત્પ્રતીઘાતકર્તૃભિઃ ॥
૧૨ ॥
The celestial weapons Ambika loosed in their hundreds, the lord of the daityas broke with weapons that countered them.
મુક્તાનિ તેન ચાસ્ત્રાણિ દિવ્યાનિ પરમેશ્વરી ।
બભઞ્જ લીલયૈવોગ્રહુઙ્કારોચ્ચારણાદિભિઃ ॥
૧૩ ॥
And the celestial weapons he loosed, Parameshwari broke as if at play, with a fierce cry of ‘hum’ and the like.
તતઃ શરશતૈર્દેવીમાચ્છાદયત સોઽસુરઃ ।
સાપિ તત્કુપિતા દેવી ધનુશ્ચિચ્છેદ ચેષુભિઃ ॥
૧૪ ॥
Then the asura covered the Devi with hundreds of arrows; and the Devi, angered, cut through his bow with Her arrows.
છિન્ને ધનુષિ દૈત્યેન્દ્રસ્તથા શક્તિમથાદદે ।
ચિચ્છેદ દેવી ચક્રેણ તામપ્યસ્ય કરે સ્થિતામ્ ॥
૧૫ ॥
His bow cut, the lord of the daityas took up a spear; the Devi cut that too with Her discus, even as it lay in his hand.
તતઃ ખડ્ગમુપાદાય શતચન્દ્રં ચ ભાનુમત્ ।
અભ્યધાવત્તદા દેવીં દૈત્યાનામધિપેશ્વરઃ ॥
૧૬ ॥
Then the overlord of the daityas took up a sword and a shining shield marked with a hundred moons, and rushed at the Devi.
તસ્યાપતત એવાશુ ખડ્ગં ચિચ્છેદ ચણ્ડિકા ।
ધનુર્મુક્તૈઃ શિતૈર્બાણૈશ્ચર્મ ચાર્કકરામલમ્ ॥
૧૭ ॥
Even as he fell upon Her, Chandika swiftly cut through his sword, and his shield bright as the sun's rays, with sharp arrows from Her bow.
હતાશ્વઃ સ તદા દૈત્યશ્છિન્નધન્વા વિસારથિઃ ।
જગ્રાહ મુદ્ગરં ઘોરમમ્બિકાનિધનોદ્યતઃ ॥
૧૮ ॥
His horses slain, his bow cut and his charioteer gone, the daitya then seized a dreadful club, bent on killing Ambika.
ચિચ્છેદાપતતસ્તસ્ય મુદ્ગરં નિશિતૈઃ શરૈઃ ।
તથાપિ સોઽભ્યધાવત્તાં મુષ્ટિમુદ્યમ્ય વેગવાન્ ॥
૧૯ ॥
As he came on, She cut through his club with sharp arrows; still he rushed at Her, swift, with his fist raised.
સ મુષ્ટિં પાતયામાસ હૃદયે દૈત્યપુઙ્ગવઃ ।
દેવ્યાસ્તં ચાપિ સા દેવી તલેનોરસ્યતાડયત્ ॥
૨૦ ॥
That bull among daityas brought his fist down on the Devi's breast, and the Devi struck him on the chest with the palm of Her hand.
તલપ્રહારાભિહતો નિપપાત મહીતલે ।
સ દૈત્યરાજઃ સહસા પુનરેવ તથોત્થિતઃ ॥
૨૧ ॥
Struck by the blow of Her palm, the king of the daityas fell to the ground, but at once he rose again as before.
ઉત્પત્ય ચ પ્રગૃહ્યોચ્ચૈર્દેવીં ગગનમાસ્થિતઃ ।
તત્રાપિ સા નિરાધારા યુયુધે તેન ચણ્ડિકા ॥
૨૨ ॥
Leaping up, he seized the Devi and rose high into the sky; there too Chandika, with nothing to stand on, fought him.
નિયુદ્ધં ખે તદા દૈત્યશ્ચણ્ડિકા ચ પરસ્પરમ્ ।
ચક્રતુઃ પ્રથમં સિદ્ધમુનિવિસ્મયકારકમ્ ॥
૨૩ ॥
Then the daitya and Chandika fought hand to hand in the sky, a combat such as had never been, that filled the siddhas and sages with wonder.
તતો નિયુદ્ધં સુચિરં કૃત્વા તેનામ્બિકા સહ ।
ઉત્પાત્ય ભ્રામયામાસ ચિક્ષેપ ધરણીતલે ॥
૨૪ ॥
Then, after fighting him hand to hand for a long while, Ambika lifted him up, whirled him round and flung him to the earth.
સ ક્ષિપ્તો ધરણીં પ્રાપ્ય મુષ્ટિમુદ્યમ્ય વેગિતઃ ।
અભ્યધાવત દુષ્ટાત્મા ચણ્ડિકાનિધનેચ્છયા ॥
૨૫ ॥
Flung down, that wicked one reached the ground and, fist raised, rushed swiftly at Chandika, wanting to kill Her.
તમાયાન્તં તતો દેવી સર્વદૈત્યજનેશ્વરમ્ ।
જગત્યાં પાતયામાસ ભિત્ત્વા શૂલેન વક્ષસિ ॥
૨૬ ॥
As that lord of all the daityas came on, the Devi pierced his chest with Her spear and threw him down upon the earth.
સ ગતાસુઃ પપાતોર્વ્યાં દેવીશૂલાગ્રવિક્ષતઃ ।
ચાલયન્ સકલાં પૃથ્વીં સાબ્ધિદ્વીપાં સપર્વતામ્ ॥
૨૭ ॥
Pierced by the point of the Devi's spear, he fell lifeless to the ground, shaking the whole earth with its seas, islands and mountains.
તતઃ પ્રસન્નમખિલં હતે તસ્મિન્ દુરાત્મનિ ।
જગત્ સ્વાસ્થ્યમતીવાપ નિર્મલં ચાભવન્નભઃ ॥
૨૮ ॥
When that wicked one was slain, the whole world grew serene and came fully to health again, and the sky turned clear.
ઉત્પાતમેઘાઃ સોલ્કા યે પ્રાગાસંસ્તે શમં યયુઃ ।
સરિતો માર્ગવાહિન્યસ્તથાસંસ્તત્ર પાતિતે ॥
૨૯ ॥
The clouds of ill omen and the falling meteors that had been before were stilled, and when he had fallen the rivers flowed in their courses again.
તતો દેવગણાઃ સર્વે હર્ષનિર્ભરમાનસાઃ ।
બભૂવુર્નિહતે તસ્મિન્ ગન્ધર્વા લલિતં જગુઃ ॥
૩૦ ॥
When he was slain, the hearts of all the hosts of gods overflowed with joy, and the gandharvas sang sweetly.
અવાદયંસ્તથૈવાન્યે નનૃતુશ્ચાપ્સરોગણાઃ ।
વવુઃ પુણ્યાસ્તથા વાતાઃ સુપ્રભોઽભૂદ્દિવાકરઃ ॥
૩૧ ॥
Others played their instruments, and the apsaras danced; pure breezes blew, and the sun shone bright.
જજ્વલુશ્ચાગ્નયઃ શાન્તાઃ શાન્તા દિગ્જનિતસ્વનાઃ ॥
૩૨ ॥
The altar fires that had gone out blazed up again, and the dreadful sounds from every quarter fell silent.
