Shri Krishna

The flute, the butter, the Gita

1

bhaje vrajaikamaṇḍanaṁ samastapāpakhaṇḍanaṁ svabhaktacittarañjanaṁ sadaiva nandanandanam. supicchagucchamastakaṁ sunādaveṇuhastakaṁ anaṅgaraṅgasāgaraṁ namāmi kr̥ṣṇanāgaram.

I adore Nandanandan always — the one ornament of Vraj, breaker of every sin, gladdener of his own people's hearts; peacock plumes on his head, the sweet-sounding flute in his hand, an ocean of grace — I bow to Krishna the player.

2

manojagarvamocanaṁ viśālalolalocanaṁ vidhūtagopaśocanaṁ namāmi padmalocanam. karāravindabhūdharaṁ smitāvalokasundaraṁ mahendramānadāraṇaṁ namāmi kr̥ṣṇavāraṇam.

I bow to the lotus-eyed one who broke the pride of Kamadeva, wide and restless of eye, who took away the cowherds' grief; who held the mountain on his lotus hand, lovely in his smiling glance, who broke great Indra's pride — I bow to Krishna the elephant among men.

3

kadambasūnakuṇḍalaṁ sucārugaṇḍamaṇḍalaṁ vrajāṅganaikavallabhaṁ namāmi kr̥ṣṇadurlabham. yaśodayā samodayā sagopayā sanandayā yutaṁ sukhaikadāyakaṁ namāmi gopanāyakam.

Kadamba blossoms for earrings, his cheeks most fair, the one beloved of the women of Vraj — I bow to Krishna, hard to come by; with glad Yashoda, with the cowherds and with Nanda, sole giver of happiness — I bow to the cowherds' lord.

4

sadaiva pādapaṅkajaṁ madīyamānase nijaṁ dadhānamuktamālakaṁ namāmi nandabālakam. samastadoṣaśoṣaṇaṁ samastalokapoṣaṇaṁ samastagopamānasaṁ namāmi nandalālasam.

He who has set his lotus feet for ever in the lake of my mind, his curls loose and lovely — I bow to Nanda's boy; drier-up of every fault, nourisher of every world, the heart of all the cowherds and Nanda's own longing — I bow to him.

5

bhuvo bharāvatārakaṁ bhavābdhikarṇadhārakaṁ yaśomatīkiśorakaṁ namāmi cittacorakam. dr̥gantakāntabhaṅginaṁ sadāsadālasaṅginaṁ dine dine navaṁ navaṁ namāmi nandasambhavam.

Lifter of the earth's burden, helmsman of the sea of the world, Yashoda's boy — I bow to the stealer of hearts; his sidelong glance most lovely, always beautifully adorned, new and new again each day — I bow to Nanda's son.

6

guṇākaraṁ sukhākaraṁ kr̥pākaraṁ kr̥pāparaṁ suradviṣannikandanaṁ namāmi gopanandanam. navīnagopanāgaraṁ navīnakelilampaṭaṁ namāmi meghasundaraṁ taḍitprabhālasatpaṭam.

Mine of virtues, mine of joy, mine of grace and full of grace, undoer of the devtas' foes — I bow to the cowherd's son; ever-new among the cowherds, ever bent on new play — I bow to him, beautiful as a raincloud, his yellow cloth flashing like lightning.

7

samastagopanandanaṁ hr̥dambujaikamodanaṁ namāmi kuñjamadhyagaṁ prasannabhānuśobhanam. nikāmakāmadāyakaṁ dr̥gantacārusāyakaṁ rasālaveṇugāyakaṁ namāmi kuñjanāyakam.

Joy of all the cowherds, the one delight of the heart's lotus — I bow to him in the bower, bright as the shining sun; giver of every wish, his glance a fair arrow, singer to the sweet flute — I bow to the lord of the bower.

8

vidagdhagopikāmanomanojñatalpaśāyinaṁ namāmi kuñjakānane pravr̥ddhavahnipāyinam. kiśorakānti rañjitaṁ dr̥gañjanaṁ suśobhitaṁ gajendramokṣakāriṇaṁ namāmi śrīvihāriṇam.

He who sleeps on the soft bed that is the mind of the clever gopis, who drank the forest fire as it grew in the bower, glowing with the light of youth, his fair eyes touched with collyrium, freer of the elephant king — I bow to him who plays with Shri.

9

yadā tadā yathā tathā tathaiva kr̥ṣṇasatkathā mayā sadaiva gīyatāṁ tathā kr̥pā vidhīyatām. pramāṇikāṣṭakadvayaṁ japatyadhītya yaḥ pumān bhavetsa nandanandane bhave bhave subhaktimān.

Whenever and however I am, let me sing Krishna's true story always — grant me that grace. Whoever reads or tells over these two authentic ashtakas will hold love for Nandanandan birth after birth.
