Sashti, the sixth day of the bright fortnight, is Murugan's day in every month; its greatest is Aippasi's, when Kanda Sashti ends with the Soorasamharam. Tamil houses keep it with a vrat, the Kanda Sashti Kavasam and a puja at dusk, asking Him for a child, for health and for every kind of wealth.
The vrat
Many begin the evening before: from Panchami's noon, with only milk and fruit that night. The day is kept without harsh words or thoughts. The elderly, and anyone pregnant or nursing, eat their meals and keep the puja: the vrat is kept to suit the body.
