Saturday's deity; the oil lamp

Opening dohas

1

jay ganesh girijaa suvan, mangal karan kripaal.

Victory to Ganesh ji, son of Girija, the gracious one who makes all things auspicious.

deenan ke duhkh door kari, keejai naath nihaal.

Remove the sorrows of the humble and make them joyful, O Shani Dev.

2

jay jay shree shanidev prabhu, sunahu vinay mahaaraaj.

Victory to Shani Dev; O Great King, please listen to my humble prayer.

karahu kripaa he ravi tanay, raakhahu jan kee laaj.

O son of Surya Dev, show mercy and protect the honour of the one who keeps you.

Chaupai

1

jayati jayati shanidev dayaalaa, karat sadaa bhaktan pratipaalaa.

Victory, victory to the compassionate Shani Dev; He always protects and sustains his own.

2

chaari bhujaa, tanu shyaam viraajai, maathe ratan mukut chhavi chhaajai.

He has four arms, a dark complexion, and sits majestically; a radiant crown studded with precious gems adorns His head.

3

param vishaal manohar bhaalaa, tedhee drishti bhrikuti vikaraalaa.

His broad forehead is striking and impressive; His sidelong glance and knitted eyebrows appear fierce.

4

kundal shravan chamaacham chamake, hiye maal muktan mani damakai.

Earrings flash brightly at his ears; a string of pearls and gems shines upon his chest.

5

kar men gadaa trishool kuthaaraa, pal bich karain arihin sanhaaraa.

He holds a mace, trident, and axe in His hands; He destroys enemies in an instant.

6

pingal, krishno, chhaayaa, nandan, yam, konasth, raudr, duhkh bhanjan.

He is known as Pingal, Krishna, and Chhaya's son; He is Yama, Konastha, Raudra, and the destroyer of sorrow.

7

sauree, mand shanee dash naamaa, bhaanu putr poojahin sab kaamaa.

Sauri and Manda are among his ten names; offering puja to the son of Surya Dev brings every work to its end.

8

jaapar prabhu prasann havain jaaheen, rankahun raav karain kshan maaheen.

Whomever Shani Dev is pleased with, he can turn from a pauper into a king in a moment.

9

parvatahoo trin hoi nihaarat, trinahoo ko parvat kari daarat.

He can make a mountain look like a blade of grass; He can turn a blade of grass into a mountain.

10

raaj milat ban raamahin deenhyo, kaikeihun kee mati hari leenhyo.

He sent Ram ji to the forest just as He was about to get the kingdom; He did this by taking away the sense of Kaikeyi.

11

vanahun men mrig kapat dikhaaee, maatu jaanakee gaee churaaee.

In the forest he showed the illusory deer, and so Sita Maa was carried away.

12

lashanahin shakti vikal karidaaraa, machigaa dal men haahaakaaraa.

He caused Lakshmana to faint from the weapon; this created a great uproar in the army.

13

raavan kee gati-mati bauraaee, raamachandr son bair badhaaee.

He turned Ravana's mind and judgement, and so his enmity with Ram ji grew.

14

diyo keet kari kanchan lankaa, baji bajarang beer kee dankaa.

Golden Lanka was burnt to ash, and the drum of the brave Hanuman ji sounded.

15

nrip vikram par tuhi pagu dhaaraa, chitr mayoor nigali gai haaraa.

You set your step upon King Vikramaditya, and the painted peacock swallowed the necklace.

16

haar naulakhaa laagyo choree, haath pair daravaayo toree.

He was accused of stealing that priceless necklace, and his hands and feet were broken for it.

17

bhaaree dashaa nikrisht dikhaayo, telahin ghar kolhoo chalavaayo.

You showed him the hardest of your turns, and set him to drive the oil-presser's wheel.

18

vinay raag deepak mahan keenhyon, tab prasann prabhu hai sukh deenhyon.

He sang his plea in raga Deepak, and then, pleased, you gave him ease.

19

harishchandr nrip naari bikaanee, aapahun bhare dom ghar paanee.

King Harishchandra had to sell his wife, and carry water himself in a low house.

20

taise nal par dashaa siraanee, bhoonjee-meen kood gaee paanee.

Your turn passed over Nala in the same way: the fried fish leapt back into the water.

21

shree shankarahin gahyo jab jaaee, paaravatee ko satee karaaee.

When you took hold of Shiv ji himself, Parvati ji was made to give up her body.

22

tanik vilokat hee kari reesaa, nabh udi gayo gaurisut seesaa.

One angry glance from you, and the head of Gauri's son flew into the sky.

23

paandav par bhai dashaa tumhaaree, bachee dropadee hoti ughaaree.

Your turn came over the Pandavas, and Draupadi was barely saved from being stripped.

24

kaurav ke bhee gati mati maarayo, yuddh mahaabhaarat kari daarayo.

You took the sense of the Kauravas too, and so the war of the Mahabharata was brought about.

25

ravi kahan mukh mahan dhari tatkaalaa, lekar koodi parayo paataalaa.

You took Surya Dev into your mouth at once, and leapt down with him into the lower world.

26

shesh dev-lakhi vinatee laaee, ravi ko mukh te diyo chhudaaee.

Sheshnag and the gods came with their plea, and you let Surya Dev go from your mouth.

27

vaahan prabhu ke saat sujaanaa, jag diggaj gardabh mrig svaanaa.

Seven are his mounts, and the wise know them — the elephant, the donkey, the deer and the dog among them.

28

jambuk sinh aadi nakh dhaaree, so phal jyotish kahat pukaaree.

Whether he comes on a jackal, a lion or another clawed beast, the jyotishis read the year from it.

29

gaj vaahan lakshmee grih aavain, hay te sukh sampatti upajaavain.

When He comes riding an elephant, wealth enters the house; riding a horse brings happiness and prosperity.

30

gardabh haani karai bahu kaajaa, sinh siddhakar raaj samaajaa.

Riding a donkey causes harm to many works; riding a lion brings success and royal status.

31

jambuk buddhi nasht kar daarai, mrig de kasht praan sanhaarai.

The jackal mount destroys intelligence; the deer mount gives life-threatening suffering.

32

jab aavahin prabhu svaan savaar, choree aadi hoy dar bhaaree.

When He arrives riding a dog; there is a great fear of theft and other losses.

33

taisahi chaari charan yah naamaa, svarn lauh chaandee aru taamaa.

Similarly, Shani is described as having four phases; these are gold, iron, silver, and copper.

34

lauh charan par jab prabhu aavain, dhan jan sampatti nasht karaavain.

When he comes on the iron foot, wealth, people and holdings are brought down.

35

samataa taamr rajat shubhakaaree, svarn sarv sarvasukh mangal bhaaree.

The copper phase is neutral, and silver is auspicious; gold brings immense happiness and good fortune.

36

jo yah shani charitr nit gaavai, kabahun n dashaa nikrisht sataavai.

Whoever sings this account of Shani Dev daily is never troubled by a hard turn.

37

adbhut naath dikhaavain leelaa, karain shatru ke nashi bali dheelaa.

Shani Dev shows wonderful things; he undoes an enemy and loosens their strength.

38

jo pandit suyogy bulavaaee, vidhivat shani grah shaanti karaaee.

Call a pandit who knows the work, and have the shanti for Shani done as the books set it out.

39

peepal jal shani divas chadhaavat, deep daan dai bahu sukh paavat.

Giving water to the peepal on a Saturday, and a diya with it, brings great ease.

40

kahat raam sundar prabhu daasaa, shani sumirat sukh hot prakaashaa.

Ram Sundar, his servant, says this: remembering Shani Dev brings ease, and light with it.

Closing doha

paath shaneeshchar dev ko, keehon 'bhakt' taiyaar.

A person who makes ready and reads this paath of Shani Dev —

karat paath chaalees din, ho bhavasaagar paar.

By reciting it for forty days, they will cross the ocean of existence.
