1

jaya gaṇeśa girijā suvana, maṁgala karaṇa kr̥pāla.

Victory to Ganesh ji, son of Girija, the gracious one who makes all things auspicious.

dīnana ke duḥkha dūra kari, kījai nātha nihāla.

Remove the sorrows of the humble and make them joyful, O Shani Dev.

2

jaya jaya śrī śanideva prabhu, sunahu vinaya mahārāja.

Victory to Shani Dev; O Great King, please listen to my humble prayer.

karahu kr̥pā he ravi tanaya, rākhahu jana kī lāja.

O son of Surya Dev, show mercy and protect the honour of the one who keeps you.

Chaupai

1

jayati jayati śanideva dayālā, karata sadā bhaktana pratipālā.

Victory, victory to the compassionate Shani Dev; He always protects and sustains his own.

2

cāri bhujā, tanu śyāma virājai, māthe ratana mukuṭa chavi chājai.

He has four arms, a dark complexion, and sits majestically; a radiant crown studded with precious gems adorns His head.

3

parama viśāla manohara bhālā, ṭeḍhī dr̥ṣṭi bhr̥kuṭi vikarālā.

His broad forehead is striking and impressive; His sidelong glance and knitted eyebrows appear fierce.

4

kuṇḍala śravaṇa camācama camake, hiye māla muktana maṇi damakai.

Earrings flash brightly at his ears; a string of pearls and gems shines upon his chest.

5

kara meṁ gadā triśūla kuṭhārā, pala bica karaiṁ arihiṁ saṁhārā.

He holds a mace, trident, and axe in His hands; He destroys enemies in an instant.

6

piṁgala, kr̥ṣṇo, chāyā, nandana, yama, koṇastha, raudra, duḥkha bhaṁjana.

He is known as Pingal, Krishna, and Chhaya's son; He is Yama, Konastha, Raudra, and the destroyer of sorrow.

7

saurī, manda śanī daśa nāmā, bhānu putra pūjahiṁ saba kāmā.

Sauri and Manda are among his ten names; offering puja to the son of Surya Dev brings every work to its end.

8

jāpara prabhu prasanna havaiṁ jāhīṁ, raṁkahuṁ rāva karaiṁ kṣaṇa māhīṁ.

Whomever Shani Dev is pleased with, he can turn from a pauper into a king in a moment.

9

parvatahū tr̥ṇa hoi nihārata, tr̥ṇahū ko parvata kari ḍārata.

He can make a mountain look like a blade of grass; He can turn a blade of grass into a mountain.

10

rāja milata bana rāmahiṁ dīnhyo, kaikeihum̐ kī mati hari līnhyo.

He sent Ram ji to the forest just as He was about to get the kingdom; He did this by taking away the sense of Kaikeyi.

11

vanahuṁ meṁ mr̥ga kapaṭa dikhāī, mātu jānakī gaī curāī.

In the forest he showed the illusory deer, and so Sita Maa was carried away.

12

laṣaṇahiṁ śakti vikala kariḍārā, macigā dala meṁ hāhākārā.

He caused Lakshmana to faint from the weapon; this created a great uproar in the army.

13

rāvaṇa kī gati-mati baurāī, rāmacandra soṁ baira baḍhāī.

He turned Ravana's mind and judgement, and so his enmity with Ram ji grew.

14

diyo kīṭa kari kaṁcana laṁkā, baji bajaraṁga bīra kī ḍaṁkā.

Golden Lanka was burnt to ash, and the drum of the brave Hanuman ji sounded.

15

nr̥pa vikrama para tuhi pagu dhārā, citra mayūra nigali gai hārā.

You set your step upon King Vikramaditya, and the painted peacock swallowed the necklace.

16

hāra naulakhā lāgyo corī, hātha paira ḍaravāyo torī.

He was accused of stealing that priceless necklace, and his hands and feet were broken for it.

17

bhārī daśā nikr̥ṣṭa dikhāyo, telahiṁ ghara kolhū calavāyo.

You showed him the hardest of your turns, and set him to drive the oil-presser's wheel.

18

vinaya rāga dīpaka maham̐ kīnhyoṁ, taba prasanna prabhu hai sukha dīnhyoṁ.

He sang his plea in raga Deepak, and then, pleased, you gave him ease.

19

hariścandra nr̥pa nāri bikānī, āpahuṁ bhare ḍoma ghara pānī.

King Harishchandra had to sell his wife, and carry water himself in a low house.

20

taise nala para daśā sirānī, bhūṁjī-mīna kūda gaī pānī.

Your turn passed over Nala in the same way: the fried fish leapt back into the water.

21

śrī śaṁkarahiṁ gahyo jaba jāī, pāravatī ko satī karāī.

When you took hold of Shiv ji himself, Parvati ji was made to give up her body.

22

tanika vilokata hī kari rīsā, nabha uḍi gayo gaurisuta sīsā.

One angry glance from you, and the head of Gauri's son flew into the sky.

23

pāṇḍava para bhai daśā tumhārī, bacī dropadī hoti ughārī.

Your turn came over the Pandavas, and Draupadi was barely saved from being stripped.

24

kaurava ke bhī gati mati mārayo, yuddha mahābhārata kari ḍārayo.

You took the sense of the Kauravas too, and so the war of the Mahabharata was brought about.

25

ravi kaham̐ mukha maham̐ dhari tatkālā, lekara kūdi parayo pātālā.

You took Surya Dev into your mouth at once, and leapt down with him into the lower world.

26

śeṣa deva-lakhi vinatī lāī, ravi ko mukha te diyo chuḍāī.

Sheshnag and the gods came with their plea, and you let Surya Dev go from your mouth.

27

vāhana prabhu ke sāta sujānā, jaga diggaja gardabha mr̥ga svānā.

Seven are his mounts, and the wise know them — the elephant, the donkey, the deer and the dog among them.

28

jambuka siṁha ādi nakha dhārī, so phala jyotiṣa kahata pukārī.

Whether he comes on a jackal, a lion or another clawed beast, the jyotishis read the year from it.

29

gaja vāhana lakṣmī gr̥ha āvaiṁ, haya te sukha sampatti upajāvaiṁ.

When He comes riding an elephant, wealth enters the house; riding a horse brings happiness and prosperity.

30

gardabha hāni karai bahu kājā, siṁha siddhakara rāja samājā.

Riding a donkey causes harm to many works; riding a lion brings success and royal status.

31

jambuka buddhi naṣṭa kara ḍārai, mr̥ga de kaṣṭa prāṇa saṁhārai.

The jackal mount destroys intelligence; the deer mount gives life-threatening suffering.

32

jaba āvahiṁ prabhu svāna savāra, corī ādi hoya ḍara bhārī.

When He arrives riding a dog; there is a great fear of theft and other losses.

33

taisahi cāri caraṇa yaha nāmā, svarṇa lauha cām̐dī aru tāmā.

Similarly, Shani is described as having four phases; these are gold, iron, silver, and copper.

34

lauha caraṇa para jaba prabhu āvaiṁ, dhana jana sampatti naṣṭa karāvaiṁ.

When he comes on the iron foot, wealth, people and holdings are brought down.

35

samatā tāmra rajata śubhakārī, svarṇa sarva sarvasukha maṁgala bhārī.

The copper phase is neutral, and silver is auspicious; gold brings immense happiness and good fortune.

36

jo yaha śani caritra nita gāvai, kabahuṁ na daśā nikr̥ṣṭa satāvai.

Whoever sings this account of Shani Dev daily is never troubled by a hard turn.

37

adbhuta nātha dikhāvaiṁ līlā, karaiṁ śatru ke naśi bali ḍhīlā.

Shani Dev shows wonderful things; he undoes an enemy and loosens their strength.

38

jo paṇḍita suyogya bulavāī, vidhivata śani graha śāṁti karāī.

Call a pandit who knows the work, and have the shanti for Shani done as the books set it out.

39

pīpala jala śani divasa caḍhāvata, dīpa dāna dai bahu sukha pāvata.

Giving water to the peepal on a Saturday, and a diya with it, brings great ease.

40

kahata rāma sundara prabhu dāsā, śani sumirata sukha hota prakāśā.

Ram Sundar, his servant, says this: remembering Shani Dev brings ease, and light with it.

Closing doha

pāṭha śanīścara deva ko, kīhoṁ 'bhakta' taiyāra.

A person who makes ready and reads this paath of Shani Dev —

karata pāṭha cālīsa dina, ho bhavasāgara pāra.

By reciting it for forty days, they will cross the ocean of existence.
