The day, hour by hour
The morning
6:37 AMBrother and sister bathe; the sister makes the thali ready. Bengal gives the phonta in the morning.
Tilak · aparahna
1:17 PM – 3:31 PMThe tilak and the meal are kept in the aparahna, the fourth fifth of the day, while the dwitiya holds.
Dusk · the crescent and Yamraj's diya
5:44 PMIn Maharashtra the aukshan is done at dusk, once the new crescent shows; elsewhere a diya is set out for Yamraj.
Times for Indore in IST, UTC+5:30, rounded to the minute, computed by Kalava's engine for this town's own sunrise, sunset and moonrise. How
Yamuna ji fed her brother Yamraj at her own house on this day, and he promised that a brother who eats from his sister's hand today is free of his noose. So the brother goes to his sister: she gives him the tilak in the afternoon, waves the aarti, and feeds him what she has cooked.
The vrat
Not every sister keeps a vrat. In many homes she eats nothing until she has given the tilak, waved the aarti and fed her brother; in Bengal many sisters take no water until the phonta. A sister who is unwell, pregnant or nursing gives the tilak and eats as she needs.
