Diwali begins in Marathi and Gujarati homes with the cow and her calf. In the evening, as the cows come home, the women of the house wash their feet, offer haldi-kunku and a garland, wave the diya and feed them sweets, praying for their own children, and then light the first diyas of Diwali.
