Lohri · the katha

Dulla Bhatti

The last night of the coldest month, burnt off in a bonfire. The year's new bride and new child are brought to it, and the fire is fed the winter's own harvest — til, gur, rewri, popcorn.

He was a landlord in Akbar's Punjab who took from the collectors and gave back to the villages, and who stopped girls being carried off and sold.

Two of them he married off himself — no family to do it, so he stood as their brother, put together what dowry he could, and did the wedding at a field fire with a handful of sugar for the sweets.

Every Lohri song still names him. The children go door to door singing the one about Sunder and Mundri, and the door gives them rewri and gur, and nobody has to explain who he was.
