Kartikeya; Tuesday in the south

You, whom even Brahma, seated on the red lotus, cannot come to know,

nor the ancient Vedas, divine and set in verse; whom the sweet

nada, the end that lies beyond nada, and the soul's own flawless

knowing cannot see: You are the Knowing beyond them; beyond beginning, middle

and end, You are being, knowing and bliss, eternal;

the supreme Flame, free of every bond; You have no

name, no quality, no single form, and yet You fill every place,

the supreme Sivam, the highest good; before all knowing

You are, without beginning; beyond the five acts; and more,

of a form the mind and the inner senses cannot reach; by Your own grace

the supreme bliss that takes five forms, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Maheswara and Sadasiva; for every life

the peerless Being who stands as refuge; never waning,

whole and eternal; with no going, no coming, no joining,

and no cause before You, You are the ground of all; as on this earth

a conjurer, whose magic bewilders everyone,

is not caught in his trick and yet stands within it, so You stand; You are the first

Source that has no source; grace itself

is Your form, though You have no form; through the three instruments, mind, speech and body,

Your powers of will, knowing and action work, and so You are the Being of laya,

bhoga and adhikara, withdrawing, enjoying and governing; in Your one Self

You are the formed, the formless, and the formed and formless both,

and many forms, as each soul ripens; for the many lives sunk in the dark mala

and bewildered, to give them release, so that the mala

might ripen, You turned the corner of Your eye on them in mercy; so that they might take bodies,

to the three mayas, bindu, mohini and mahat, formless and formed, which furnish the body,

You held them bound; the six adhvas, from mantra onwards,

and the paths that run through the worlds, as was said before,

You joined them to that snare; in the ever-turning

four origins and seven kinds of birth, among the eighty-

four hundred thousand wombs, by the karma that cannot be undone

save by living it out, like a spinning top or a turning wheel,

You had them born and wander, and then veiled them; the cruel hells

and every pleasure of svarga and the rest You made them taste; as they ripened,

when a little merit came to them, in the arguing

old books of every outer creed, each one's own

they took for the true book, and there You settled them; then the first book's

many vrats and disciplines; and as the fruit of true tapas, the path of truth,

charya, kriya and yoga, You led them to; in grace that grows

You let them taste salokya, samipya and sarupya,

and widened their clear sight; the fourfold

shaktinipata, the descent of grace, to give them; when the two karmas

came to balance and that time arrived, and the binding

mala was ripe, seeing how for many days

they had whirled in distress, You took pity; unfailing,

the knowing within all knowing, yet beyond the reach of that knowing,

You left the state in which You dwell, and in a form of

mercy that never leaves us You appeared on this very earth,

taking the name Guruparan, the supreme Guru; with Your gracious glance

You took away the stored karma; the sixty-eight instruments of the body and the seven grounds

from the muladhara up, and the six adhvas, all came to nothing;

You tore away the veil that is anava, and gave them

the eye of true knowledge that their own knowing cannot find; by the knowledge

of Your feet they came to wear, You showed them the Supreme and the soul,

and showed them all the guarded worlds that bind; unending,

brimming, like clear nectar of the supreme bliss, everywhere

without a gap, You showed them how You stand; beyond going

and coming, thinking and forgetting, day

and night, You brought them to a bliss that never ends;

to the souls bound by karma-mala, with three lotus eyes, long matted hair,

the strong axe and the deer, on the bull that is Vishnu, with Uma like lightning at Your left,

as if a mountain of coral in bloom had risen upon a silver mountain,

You took a divine form; the age-old

bonds of karma and mala You cut for them, and gave them the eye of grace; dwelling within,

You gave bliss to the souls bound by one mala alone; the swelling

three states You stripped away, set them among the freed,

and brought them to the highest release; there, plainly seen,

the place where 'I' and 'mine' are gone is Your feet,

the silence that gives the supreme bliss is Your crown, knowledge

is Your form, will, action and knowing are Your eyes,

grace itself is Your red, flower-like hands, and this wide earth

is Your shrine: O peerless Flame! O Perumaan, who stand in every life

without division! Lightning-bright,

set with the nine shining gems and made of fresh gold,

Your six radiant jewelled crowns; like waning crescent

moons, six of them, set in a row,

Your brows bearing the tripundra, and the beauty of their marks; like opened

lotuses in their season, twelve in bloom,

Your twelve flower-eyes that pour out grace; like many suns

rising together and pouring out their light,

Your gleaming makara earrings; shedding moonlight,

the soft smile blooming on Your red mouth, like a red water-lily;

and Your word that ends the thirst of birth. The face that cut down,

with his bow-laden shoulders, cruel Suran, whom the fierce asuras praised,

and spilled the lives of Your foes; the face that, for every life,

turns its old karma aside and gives a life of unending bliss:

Your red flower of a face; for those who gather round You,

all the ancient Vedas and Agamas that they study

the lotus face that makes them whole; the face that drives away

the clinging dark of pasam and shines like many suns,

the round, fragrant flower of a face; the moon of a face that lovingly

gives delight to Valli, who shares Your joys, and to Devayanai, the flower-vine of the devas,

and stirs their longing; and, for those who come with thirst

and reach Your feet, to gladden them with many boons,

Your divine lotus face that gives: such are Your six faces; with clustered blossoms

of honeyed kadamba and fragrant kura blooming on them,

Your twelve shoulders, great as mountains; the hand that gives rare amrita

to the devas; the soft hand that, as the maidens of heaven

wished, tenderly embraced them; the flower of a hand that without ceasing

pours down the rain; the hand that wears the flower garlands

gathered together; the hand laid upon Your chest,

and the hand at Your left side;

the one hand resting on Your thigh; the hand with small bangles

crowded close; the broad hand bearing the bell;

the hand that holds the goad for the fierce battle; in the crushing fight

the palm that whirls the ringing shield;

the hand that brandishes the gleaming sword: Your twelve hands; the wide chest that Your young

brides of heaven, red-lipped and slender as vines, longed for and embraced,

adorned with ornaments of fine gold and gems; the fresh-gold

janeu, the rudraksha string, the soft silk garment worked with flowers,

the waist-string, the beauty of the sash, Your waist;

the ringing hero's anklets, the golden bells with bright gems,

the ornaments worn on Your feet; and Your divine form, which blazes

like a hundred thousand crore young suns rising,

rich in splendour: those who see all this within their hearts

and hold it dear, You are their very life; upon the lotus of the bhakta's heart

the blessed land that gives clear bliss; the fair city that stands above

every joy of the earth, in the great world of release, where there is no going

without leaving them, as one who stands before a mirror moves his reflection, the worlds

whose books breathe a divine fragrance, praise one by one

as the ten marks of a king, You hold as Yours! On shining,

lovely Mount Kailas, with Uma, garlanded in flowers, at His left

side, dwells the three-eyed supreme Light, Shiv ji; there, one day,

moved by the plea of the devas, who could not stand against the cruel asuras,

to His five faces He added the face that looks below,

and, six-faced, from His six eyes of red flame

sent out six sparks of fire together; spreading through the wide

worlds everywhere, the devas saw them and were afraid;

the blazing mass of flame He took up there with His golden hand

and calmed it; 'Take it and go,' He said to Vayu, and our Perumaan

gave it over; Vayu bore it gently away, and to the one who stood next,

'O chief of the elements, take it on,' he said; Agni

carried it to the cool Ganga; even for a moment

she could not hold it, and into the Saravana pool,

bearing it on her head, she set it down; it became Your blessed forms; first

You drank at the breasts of the six Krittika mothers, wept and played;

the Master who wears the fragrant Ganga on His head, with His gently smiling

Devi, went there and showed her the forms of the child they loved;

she saw them, and those six forms, with her two

hands, she took up and held close; she named You Kandan, Lord Murugan;

she made the six bodies one; to her lovely

face she held You, kissed the crown of Your head, and her milk

she gave You, her heart blooming with joy; into the hands

of the Stainless One, seated on the white bull that is Vishnu, who measured the world, she gave You,

and You grew great, and their hearts were glad! From the anklet of Uma,

whose speech is a parrot's, nine gems fell, and from them rose

nine noble maidens; freed of their sorrow, by their

Veerabahu of the fragrant garland, went after the ram that, born of a sacrificial fire,

roamed about destroying all the wide worlds,

that red-eyed ram, and brought it back: 'O my King,

You ride and play, O Master! When the Creator,

Brahma, spoke in pride, 'The first letter of the Veda,

the Pranava the wise hold dear, you have not told its truth;

how then can you do the work of creation?' You said, and long ago

You rapped his head and held him prisoner, O King! He of the honey-dripping

golden konrai in His twisted locks, Shiv ji, sang Your praise,

and to Him You spoke the meaning of the Pranava! With the long Vel that slays,

so that Tarakan and Krauncha, the great mountain of illusion, fell to dust,

O You who let fly the sharp, victorious Vel! At glorious Alaivai,

where the clear waves wash up, You went to Chendur and, like a flood of mercy,

hero, Veerabahu, You sent as envoy! Because the dark asura

would neither free the devas nor bow, the cruel

danavas' fourfold armies You destroyed; with Bhanugopan,

the sun's foe, and his other sons, Simha-

mukhan You defeated, and wore the garland of victory! In the sea that girdles the world

Suran lay, become a strange mango tree; his huge

body You split with Your shining Vel! The warrior asura's

body in two halves became a mighty peacock and a rooster,

and rose up with a great cry; of the two,

the bright peacock that fights the hissing snake, as Your mount

You ride, O ever-young One! The foe who came back changed,

the rooster, as Your mighty banner

You raised high above all, O Exalted One! The needs of the three,

Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, You met; You settled heaven again; the devas

You freed from prison, took as Your own and kept, O Deva! The end of the Vedas,

O tender shoot of Saivam! O ocean of tapas! Devayanai,

whom heaven's divine elephant raised, You wed! The sage who had turned from

desire mixed with falsehood cast a gracious glance, and so

from the womb of a gentle doe she was born; in the flowering

forest, to the joy of the hill people, like a lovely koel

she guarded the millet field and lived there sweetly; and, in her goodness,

sifted millet flour and honey she lovingly gave You:

Valli, that slender vine, You wed! With glad hearts,

those who see the six sacred abodes and with love

say the six syllables, in their minds You have made Your home! Where, from fragrant

areca groves, clouds rise and the wind tosses them, glorious Alaivai,

Chendur, You guard, O Sevvel, the red One! At every moment,

the enmity of countless crores of births, untimely death,

countless obstacles, many diseases, countless

grave wrongs, harm worked on us by others, snakes, ghosts, mighty

bhutas, fire and water, the weapons of war, the cruel poison

that never loses its harm, fierce beasts and all the rest:

wherever they come and face us, there

Your green peacock, Your twelve strong shoulders,

the sharp Vel that drives away fear, Your sashed

waist, Your small feet, Your red hands, Your twelve

eyes of grace, Your six great faces, and, scattering

their rays, the six crowns You wear,

may they appear before us in every direction; come, and every trouble

grind to dust; give every boon; enter

and dwell gladly in my heart; the many kinds of verse,

the four kinds of poem from the swift ashu on, the eightfold attention of ashtavadhanam,

the whole body of the great epics, praised for their form; the five grammars

beginning with the letters of sound: steeped in these,

ripe learning in Tamil grant me, and with it right conduct;

in this very birth take away the two attachments,

destroy the three great malas; with those who have let go of self

and seek You, Your bhaktas of old, join me,

let me taste the supreme bliss they are steeped in; Your red,

fragrant, lotus-flower feet show me, take me as Yours,

and stand before me, Your servant, and give Your grace!
