துதிப்போர்க்கு வல்வினைபோம் துன்பம்போம் நெஞ்சில்
Those who praise with it lose the karma that binds them hard, and their sorrow; those who set it in the heart
பதிப்போர்க்குச் செல்வம் பலித்துக் கதித்தோங்கும்
see their wealth bear fruit and grow ever greater,
நிஷ்டையுங் கைகூடும் நிமலர் அருள் கந்தர்
and steadiness in tapas comes within their reach — such is the Kavasam of Kanda, Lord Murugan, given by the grace of the Pure One,
சஷ்டி கவசந் தனை.

அமர ரிடர்தீர அமரம் புரிந்த
He fought the war that ended the troubles of the devas:
குமரனடி நெஞ்சே குறி.
O my heart, fix yourself on the feet of Kumara.
சஷ்டியை நோக்கச் சரவண பவனார்
As I turn to the Sashti, may Saravanabhava, born in the Saravana pool,
சிஷ்டருக் குதவும் செங்கதிர் வேலோன்
He who helps the good, who bears the Vel of red rays —
பாதம் இரண்டில் பன்மணிச் சதங்கை
the anklets of many bells on His two feet
கீதம் பாடக் கிண்கிணி யாட
singing their song, the little bells swinging,
மையல் நடஞ்செய்யும் மயில்வா கனனார்
He who rides the peacock and dances to enchant all hearts,
கையில் வேலால் எனைக் காக்கவென் றுவந்து
gladly come, saying He will guard me with the Vel in His hand.
வரவர வேலா யுதனார் வருக
Come, come, You whose weapon is the Vel, come!
வருக வருக மயிலோன் வருக
Come, come, Rider of the peacock, come!
இந்திரன் முதலா எண்டிசை போற்ற
Indra first, and the eight directions, praising You,
மந்திர வடிவேல் வருக வருக
keen Vel of mantra, come, come!
வாசவன் மருகா வருக வருக
Son-in-law of Indra, come, come!
நேசக் குறமகள் நினைவோன் வருக
You who dwell in the thoughts of loving Valli, the hill-girl, come!
ஆறுமுகம் படைத்த ஐயா வருக

நீறிடும் வேலவன் நித்தம் வருக

அசுரர் குடிகெடுத்த ஐயா வருக
O Master who brought the race of the asuras to ruin, come!
என்னை ஆளும் இளையோன் கையில்
The Young One who rules over me — in His hands
பன்னிரண் டாயுதம் பாசாங் குசமும்
twelve weapons, the noose and the goad;
பரந்த விழிகள் பன்னிரண் டிலங்க
His twelve wide eyes shining,
விரைந்தெனைக் காக்க வேலோன் வருக
may He of the Vel come swiftly to guard me.
ஐயும் கிலியும் அடைவுடன் சௌவும்
The seed syllables Aim and Klim, and Saum in its order;
உய்யொளி சௌவும் உயிரையும் கிலியும்
Saum, the light that saves; Aim, that is life; and Klim;
கிலியுஞ் சௌவும் கிளரொளி யையும்
Klim and Saum, and Aim of blazing light —
நிலைபெற் றென்முன் நித்தமும் ஒளிரும்
standing firm, they shine before me every day;
சண்முகன் றீயும் தனியொளி யொவ்வும்
Shanmukha, with Ri and Ov, seed sounds of a light beyond compare —
குண்டலி யாம்சிவ குகன் தினம் வருக
Guha, son of Shiva, who is the Kundalini itself, come to me each day!
ஆறு முகமும் அணிமுடி ஆறும்
Your six faces and six jewelled crowns,
நீறிடு நெற்றியும் நீண்ட புருவமும்
the foreheads marked with vibhuti, the long brows,
பன்னிரு கண்ணும் பவளச்செவ் வாயும்
the twelve eyes and the lips red as coral,
நன்னெறி நெற்றியில் நவமணிச் சுட்டியும்
on the fair foreheads, the ornament of nine gems,
ஈராறு செவியில் இலகுகுண் டலமும்
in the twelve ears, gleaming earrings;
ஆறிரு திண்புயத் தழகிய மார்பில்
on the twelve strong shoulders and the beautiful chest
பல்பூ ஷணமும் பதக்கமும் தரித்து
many ornaments and a pendant, worn,
நன்மணி பூண்ட நவரத்ன மாலையும்
and a garland of the nine gems set with fine jewels;
முப்புரி நூலும் முத்தணி மார்பும்
the three-stranded janeu, the chest hung with pearls,
செப்பழ குடைய திருவயி றுந்தியும்
the lovely belly and navel, fair beyond telling,
துவண்ட மருங்கில் சுடரொளிப் பட்டும்
the silk that blazes with light at the slender waist,
நவரத்னம் பதித்த நற்சீ ராவும்
the fine armour set with the nine gems,
இருதொடை யழகும் இணைமுழந் தாளும்
the beauty of the two thighs, and the pair of knees;
திருவடி யதனில் சிலம்பொலி முழங்க
and on Your feet the anklets ringing out:

O Treasure of Eragam, who rules over me,
மைந்தன் வேண்டும் வரமகிழ்ந் துதவும்
You who gladly grant the boons Your son asks for,

amid rapt cries of lala lala lala,
லீலா லீலா லீலா வினோ தனென்று
'O You of wondrous play upon play upon play' — so I call You.
உன் திருவடியை உறுதியென் றெண்ணும்
I, who hold Your feet to be my one sure refuge —

set Your two feet upon my head and guard me.

May He who is the life of my life guard me;
பன்னிரு விழியால் பாலனைக் காக்க
with Your twelve eyes, guard this child of Yours.

May the beautiful Vel guard the face of Your servant;
பொடிபுனை நெற்றியைப் புனிதவேல் காக்க
may the pure Vel guard the forehead marked with vibhuti;
கதிர்வேல் இரண்டு கண்ணினைக் காக்க
may the radiant Vel guard the two eyes;
விதிசெவி இரண்டும் வேலவர் காக்க
may Velava guard the two ears the Creator shaped;
நாசிகளி ரண்டும் நல்வேல் காக்க
may the good Vel guard the two nostrils;
பேசிய வாய்தனைப் பெருவேல் காக்க
may the great Vel guard the mouth that has spoken Your praise;
முப்பத் திருபல் முனைவேல் காக்க
may the keen-pointed Vel guard the thirty-two teeth;
செப்பிய நாவைச் செவ்வேல் காக்க
may the red Vel guard the tongue that has uttered Your name;
கன்னமி ரண்டும் கதிர்வேல் காக்க
may the radiant Vel guard the two cheeks;
என்னிளங் கழுத்தை இனியவேல் காக்க
may the sweet Vel guard my tender neck;
மார்பை இரத்ன வடிவேல் காக்க
may the jewelled, keen Vel guard the chest;

may the keen Vel guard the two shoulders and keep them strong;

may the great Vel guard the nape on both sides;
அழகுடன் முதுகை அருள்வேல் காக்க
may the gracious Vel guard the back and keep it well;
பழுபதி னாறும் பருவேல் காக்க
may the mighty Vel guard the sixteen ribs;
வெற்றிவேல் வயிற்றை விளங்கவே காக்க
may the Vel of victory guard the belly and keep it sound;
சிற்றிடை யழகுறச் செவ்வேல் காக்க
may the red Vel guard the slender waist in its beauty;
நாணாங் கயிற்றை நல்வேல் காக்க
may the good Vel guard the cord of the sinews;
ஆண் குறியிரண்டும் அயில்வேல் காக்க
may the sharp Vel guard the organs of generation;
பிட்ட மிரண்டும் பெருவேல் காக்க
may the great Vel guard the two buttocks;
வட்டக் குதத்தை வல்வேல் காக்க
may the strong Vel guard the anus;

கணைக்கால் முழந்தாள் கதிர்வேல் காக்க
may the radiant Vel guard the shins and the knees;
ஐவிரல் அடியிணை அருள்வேல் காக்க
may the gracious Vel guard the two feet with their five toes;
கைகளி ரண்டும் கருணைவேல் காக்க
may the merciful Vel guard the two hands;
முன்கையி ரண்டும் முரண்வேல் காக்க
may the fierce Vel guard the two forearms;
பின்கையி ரண்டும் பின்னவள் இருக்க
may Lakshmi Maa dwell in the two upper arms;
நாவில் சரஸ்வதி நற்றுணை யாக
may Saraswati Maa be a good companion on my tongue;
நாபிக் கமலம் நல்வேல் காக்க
may the good Vel guard the lotus of the navel;
முப்பால் நாடியை முனைவேல் காக்க
may the keen Vel guard the three channels of the breath;
எப்பொழு தும்எனை எதிர்வேல் காக்க
may the Vel that meets every foe guard me at all times.
அடியேன் வசனம் அசைவுள நேரம்
Whenever Your servant's words stir upon the tongue,
கடுகவே வந்து கனகவேல் காக்க
may the golden Vel come swiftly and guard me;
வரும்பகல் தன்னில் வச்சிரவேல் காக்க
as the day comes, may the diamond Vel guard me;
அரையிருள் தன்னில் அனையவேல் காக்க
in the middle of the night, may that same Vel guard me;
ஏமத்தில் சாமத்தில் எதிர்வேல் காக்க
in the first watch of night and in the deep watch, may the Vel that meets every foe guard me;
தாமதம் நீக்கிச் சதுர்வேல் காக்க
without delay, may the skilful Vel guard me.

Guard me, guard me, golden Vel, guard me!
நோக்க நோக்க நொடியில் நோக்க
Look on me, look on me, look on me this instant!
தாக்க தாக்க தடையறத் தாக்க
Strike, strike, strike without hindrance!
பார்க்க பார்க்க பாவம் பொடிபட
Look, look, and let my sins be ground to dust;
பில்லி சூனியம் பெரும்பகை அகல
let sorcery, black magic and great enmity be gone.
வல்ல பூதம் வலாட்டிகப் பேய்கள்
Mighty bhutas, ghosts of great power,
அல்லற் படுத்தும் அடங்கா முனியும்
the unruly muni-spirits that torment,
பிள்ளைகள் தின்னும் புழக்கடை முனியும்
the backyard muni-spirit that devours children,
கொள்ளிவாய்ப் பேய்களும் குறளைப் பேய்களும்
ghosts with fire in their mouths, dwarf ghosts,
பெண்களைத் தொடரும் பிரமராட் சதரும்
the brahmarakshasas that follow women —
அடியனைக் கண்டால் அலறிக் கலங்கிட
on seeing Your servant, let them shriek and be shaken.
இரிசிகாட் டேரி இத்துன்ப சேனையும்
Irisi, Katteri, and all this host of torment,
எல்லிலும் இருட்டிலும் எதிர்ப்படும் அண்ணரும்
the Annar spirits that confront one by day and in the dark,
கனபூசை கொள்ளும் காளியோ டனைவரும்
and all who, with the fierce Kali-spirit, take lavish offerings,
விட்டாங் காரரும் மிகுபல பேய்களும்
the Vittangarar, and ghosts beyond number,
தண்டியக் காரரும் சண்டாளர் களும்
the Thandiyakkarar, and the vile ones —
என்பெயர் சொல்லவும் இடிவிழுந் தோடிட
at the saying of my name, let them flee as if struck by thunder.
ஆனை யடியினில் அரும்பா வைகளும்
Dolls of sorcery hidden under an elephant's footprint,
பூனை மயிரும் பிள்ளைகள் என்பும்
cat's hair and children's bones,
நகமும் மயிரும் நீள்முடி மண்டையும்
nails and hair, and skulls with long locks,
பாவைக ளுடனே பலகல சத்துடன்
with dolls and with many pots,
மனையிற் புதைத்த வஞ்சனை தனையும்
the treachery buried in the house,
ஒட்டியச் செருக்கும் ஒட்டியப் பாவையும்
the sorcerers' arrogance and their bewitched dolls,
காசும் பணமும் காவுடன் சோறும்
coins and money, the sacrificed creature and the rice,
ஓதும் அஞ்சனமும் ஒருவழிப் போக்கும்
the anjana smeared with spells, and the charm that drives one down a single road —
அடியனைக் கண்டால் அலைந்து குலைந்திட
on seeing Your servant, let them all be scattered and undone;
மாற்றார் வஞ்சகர் வந்து வணங்கிட
let foes and deceivers come and bow before me;
காலதூ தாளெனைக் கண்டாற் கலங்கிட
let the messengers of Yama tremble on seeing me;
அஞ்சி நடுங்கிட அரண்டு புரண்டிட
let them fear and shake, and roll about in terror;
வாய்விட் டலறி மதிகெட் டோட
let them cry aloud and run, their wits gone;
படியினில் முட்டப் பாசக் கயிற்றால்
let them strike their heads on the ground. With Your noose-rope
கட்டுடன் அங்கம் கதறிடக் கட்டு
bind them, bind them till every limb cries out;
கட்டி உருட்டு கால்கை முறிய
bind them and roll them, till legs and arms break;
கட்டு கட்டு கதறிடக் கட்டு
bind, bind, bind them till they howl;
முட்டு முட்டு முழிகள் பிதுங்கிட
dash them, dash them, till their eyes start out;
செக்கு செக்கு செதில் செதிலாக
crush them, crush them, into shreds.
சொக்கு சொக்கு சூர்ப்பகைச் சொக்கு
O Beautiful One, Beautiful One, Beautiful Foe of Sura!
குத்து குத்து கூர்வடி வேலால்
Pierce them, pierce them with the sharp, keen Vel;
பற்று பற்று பகலவன் தணலெரி
seize them, seize them; with the fire of the Sun, burn them —
தணலெரி தணலெரி தணலது வாக
burn, burn, burn, till they are embers;
விடுவிடு வேலை வெருண்டது ஓடப்
let fly, let fly the Vel, that they flee in terror.
புலியும் நரியும் புன்னரி நாயும்
The tiger, the jackal, the little fox, the dog,
எலியும் கரடியும் இனித் தொடர்ந் தோட
the rat and the bear — let them run off, one after another;
தேளும் பாம்பும் செய்யான் பூரான்
scorpion and snake, centipede and millipede —
கடிவிட விஷங்கள் கடித்துய ரங்கம்
the poisons of their bites, rising through the body,
ஏறிய விஷங்கள் எளிதினில் இறங்க
let those poisons that have risen come down with ease.
ஒளிப்புஞ் சுளுக்கும் ஒருதலை நோயும்
Hidden ills, sprains, the pain of half the head,
வாதஞ் சயித்தியம் வலிப்புப் பித்தம்
rheumatism, chills, fits and bile,
சூலைசயங் குன்மம் சொக்குச் சிரங்கு
colic, consumption, ulcers of the stomach, languor and scabies,
குடைச்சல் சிலந்தி குடல்விப் பிரிதி
aching limbs, boils, abscesses of the bowel,
பக்கப் பிளவை படர்தொடை வாழை
carbuncles of the side, swellings spreading over the thigh,
கடுவன் படுவன் கைத்தாள் சிலந்தி
sores and eruptions, boils of the hands and feet,
பற்குத் தரணை பருஅரை யாப்பும்
toothache, sores of the gums, pimples and swellings of the groin —
எல்லாப் பிணியும் என்றனைக் கண்டால்
may every sickness, on seeing me,
நில்லா தோட நீஎனக் கருள்வாய்
flee and not stay — grant me this by Your grace.
ஈரேழ் உலகமும் எனக்குற வாக
May the fourteen worlds be kin to me;
ஆணும் பெண்ணும் அனைவரும் எனக்கா
men and women, all of them, for my sake,
மண்ணா ளரசரும் மகிழ்ந்துற வாகவும்
and the kings who rule the earth, gladly be my friends.

O Nephew of Vishnu and Lakshmi Maa — Amaravati
காத்துத் தேவர்கள் கடுஞ்சிறை விடுத்தாய்
You guarded, and freed the devas from their harsh prison;
கந்தா குகனே கதிர்வே லவனே
O Kanda, O Guha, O Bearer of the radiant Vel,
கார்த்திகை மைந்தா கடம்பா கடம்பனை
O Son of the Krittikas, O You of the kadamba garland — Kadamban
இடும்பனை யழித்த இனியவேல் முருகா
and Idumban You struck down, O Murugan of the sweet Vel;
தணிகா சலனே சங்கரன் புதல்வா
O Master of the Tanigai hill, O Son of Shankara,
கதிர்கா மத்துறை கதிர்வேல் முருகா
O Murugan of the radiant Vel, who dwells at Kataragama,
பழநிப் பதிவாழ் பாலகு மாரா
O Bala Kumara, who lives at Palani,
ஆவினன் குடிவாழ் அழகிய வேலா
O beautiful Velava, who lives at Avinankudi,
செந்தின்மா மலையுறும் செங்கல்வ ராயா
O Sengalvaraya, on the great hill of Senthil,
சமரா புரிவாழ் சண்முகத் தரசே
O King Shanmukha, who lives at Samarapuri!
காரார் குழலாள் கலைமகள் நன்றாய்
May Saraswati Maa, whose tresses are dark as rain clouds,
என்நா இருக்க யானுனைப் பாட
stay well upon my tongue, that I may sing of You.
எனைத் தொடர்ந்திருக்கும் எந்தை முருகனைப்
Murugan, my Father, who stays close beside me —
பாடினேன் ஆடினேன் பரவச மாக
I sang of Him, I danced, lost in rapture;
ஆடினேன் நாடினேன் ஆவினன் பூதியை
I danced, and I sought the vibhuti of Avinankudi,
நேசமுடன் யான் நெற்றியில் அணியப்
and as I wear it on my forehead with love,
பாச வினைகள் பற்றது நீங்கி
the grip of the karma that binds falls away,
உன்பதம் பெறவே உன்னரு ளாக
that I may reach Your feet, by Your grace.
அன்புடன் இரக்ஷி அன்னமுஞ் சொன்னமும்
Guard me with love; let food and gold be mine
மெத்தமெத் தாக வேலா யுதனார்
in great abundance, O Velayudha,
சித்திபெற் றடியேன் சிறப்புடன் வாழ்க
and may Your servant live well, his wishes fulfilled.

Glory, glory to the Rider of the peacock!

வாழ்க வாழ்கஎன் வறுமைகள் நீங்க
Glory, glory — and may my want be gone!
எத்தனை குறைகள் எத்தனை பிழைகள்
However many my faults, however many my wrongs,
எத்தனை யடியேன் எத்தனை செயினும்
however much, however often Your servant errs,
பெற்றவன் நீகுரு பொறுப்பது உன்கடன்
You are my Father and my Guru: to forgive is Yours to do.
பெற்றவள் குறமகள் பெற்றவ ளாமே
Valli, the hill-girl, is my Mother, she who bore me;
பிள்ளையென் றன்பாய்ப் பிரிய மளித்து
calling me Your child, give me Your love;
மைந்தனென் மீதுன் மனமகிழ்ந் தருளித்
let Your heart delight in me, Your son, and bless me;
தஞ்சமென் றடியார் தழைத்திட அருள்செய்
and let Your bhaktas, who take You as their refuge, flourish by Your grace.
கந்தர் சஷ்டி கவசம் விரும்பிய
The Kanda Sashti Kavasam, dear to him,
பாலன் தேவ ராயன் பகர்ந்ததைக்
that the child Devarayan has spoken —
காலையில் மாலையில் கருத்துடன் நாளும்
morning and evening, with a mind intent, every day,
ஆசா ரத்துடன் அங்கந் துலக்கி
keeping the rules of purity, the body bathed clean,
நேசமுடன் ஒரு நினைவது வாகிக்
with love, and with the mind on one thought alone,
கந்தர் சஷ்டிக் கவசம் இதனைச்
this Kanda Sashti Kavasam —
சிந்தை கலங்காது தியானிப் பவர்கள்
those who hold it in dhyana with an untroubled mind,
ஒருநாள் முப்பத் தாறுருக் கொண்டு
who in one day take it up thirty-six times,
ஓதியே செபித்து உகந்துநீ றணிய
say it as japa, and gladly wear the vibhuti —
அஷ்டதிக் குள்ளோர் அடங்கலும் வசமாய்த்
all who dwell in the eight directions come under their sway;
திசைமன்ன ரெண்மர் செயலது அருளுவர்
the eight guardians of the directions grant them their favour;
மாற்றல ரெல்லாம் வந்து வணங்குவர்
all their foes come and bow before them;
நவகோள் மகிழ்ந்து நன்மை யளித்திடும்
the nine grahas, pleased, bring them good;
நவமதனெனவும் நல்லெழில் பெறுவர்
they gain a beauty like a new Manmatha's;
எந்த நாளும் ஈரெட்டாய் வாழ்வார்
and every day they live as though they were sixteen.
கந்தர்கை வேலாம் கவசத் தடியை
The lines of this Kavasam are the Vel in Kanda's hand:
வழியாய்க் காண மெய்யாய் விளங்கும்
read them in the right way, and the Truth shines forth;
விழியாற் காண வெருண்டிடும் பேய்கள்
ghosts, catching sight of them, take fright;
பொல்லா தவரைப் பொடிபொடி யாக்கும்
they grind the wicked to dust;
நல்லோர் நினைவில் நடனம் புரியும்
they dance in the minds of the good;
சர்வ சத்துரு சங்கா ரத்தடி
they are lines that destroy every enemy.
அறிந்தென துள்ளம் அஷ்ட லட்சுமிகளில்
My heart, knowing this — that among the eight Lakshmis
