How to do the Bestu Varas · New Year puja at home
The first morning of the Gujarati year: rangoli and sabras at dawn, darshan, the elders' blessing and Saal Mubarak. About 90 minutes.
Every step is named here and the first 3 are given whole. The whole puja, every mantra with its meaning, is in the Kalava app.
The whole morning, with the diya, Ganesh ji first and a small puja at the home mandir before the darshan.

Dawn · rangoli and sabras
6:42 AM · ColumbusUp early: the house cleaned, the rangoli at the door, the sabras received, the bath and new clothes.
Dawn
Up early, the house cleaned
- Rise early, before the light.
- Sweep and clean the house and the doorstep.

Dawn
Rangoli at the door
- Wipe the ground before the door.
- Make a rangoli of many colours there to welcome the year.

Dawn
Sabras
- At first light, take the sabras — salt in lumps — as it is brought to the door.
- Keep it in the house as the year's first shagun.
Sabras means 'all of one taste'. Gujarati homes tell that Shri Krishna once told Rukmini she was as dear to Him as salt; offended, she learnt its worth from a meal cooked without it, and at Dwarka the salt of the new year began.

- Bath and new clothes
