The kani is set in the night: the uruli filled with raw rice, the golden konna flowers, a cucumber, a mango, a jackfruit, betel, coins, a mirror, the Krishna ji of the house, and the vilakku lit behind it.
Before dawn the eldest wakes first, sees it, and then goes and wakes everyone else with a hand over their eyes, leading them to it one at a time. The hand comes off and that is the first thing they see in the year.
The mirror is in the kani on purpose. Whatever else is arranged, a person is also looking at themselves.
