Thai Poosam · the katha

The spear she gave him

Lord Murugan was given the vel — the spear — by his mother on this day, and went to end what nobody else could. What is carried up the hill is a kavadi, and it is carried because it was promised.

Soorapadman could not be beaten with anything that already existed, so Parvati Maa made the vel out of her own power and put it into her son's hand on the Pushya star in the month of Thai.

He went, and it ended — and the asura, at the last, was not destroyed but turned into the peacock he rides and the cock on his flag. The enemy became the vehicle.

The kavadi is carried because of that: a person takes a weight onto their own shoulders, walks it up a hill in the heat, and puts it down at his feet, having said beforehand exactly what it was for.
