Raksha Bandhan · the katha

The torn edge of a saree

A thread on the wrist, and the promise that goes with it. It is tied in the afternoon, after Bhadra has passed — a thread tied in Bhadra is held not to hold.

Krishna ji cut his finger on the Sudarshan chakra and it would not stop. Rukmini sent for cloth; Satyabhama sent for bandages. Draupadi, standing there, tore the end off what she was wearing and tied it round it.

He said nothing then. Years later, in a hall full of men who would not look up, what she had tied round a finger came back as cloth that did not end.

The rakhi is that: not a gift, a claim. A sister ties it and a brother owes her something he cannot set a price on.
