How to do the Pitru Paksha puja at home
A fortnight for the ancestors: til water each morning, and each one's shraddh on their own tithi. About 60 minutes.
Every step is named here and the first 3 are given whole. The whole puja, every mantra with its meaning, is in the Kalava app.
Water to the devas and the rishis before the pitars, the verses for everyone after them, the wrung cloth; on the tithi, the saptarchi verse and the Pitru Stotra with the pinda and the portions.

Morning · til water
7:36 AM–12:56 PM · ColumbusAfter the bath and before midday, facing south: water and black til for the pitars, each by name. Given every morning of the fortnight by those who keep it — in most houses the son whose father has died.
Morning
The bath, and what to keep ready
- Bathe in the morning — in a river or a pond where there is one, at home where there is not.
- Put on a washed dhoti, white or pale yellow.
- Sit on a seat of kusha, facing east to begin.
- Keep within reach: a copper lota of water, a small copper plate to receive it, black til, a few grains of jau, a little raw milk, white flowers, tulsi and a few blades of kusha.

Morning
Achaman
- Pour a little water from the lota into your right palm.
- Sip it once as you say each of the first three names — three sips in all.
- With the fourth name, pour a little water over your right hand to wash it.
