Why he asked about the colour

The morning after the fire, when nothing is left to be afraid of. Colour goes on everybody the same, and the year's quarrels are supposed to end at the door.

Krishna ji was dark and Radha was fair, and being a boy he minded it. He asked Yashoda why, and she said — go and colour her face whatever you like, and see what difference it makes.

He did. Vrindavan has not stopped since.

In the eight days of it there is Lathmar Holi at Barsana, where the women drive the men out with sticks; and the widows of Vrindavan, who were not allowed colour at all, now play first. A day that began with a boy minding his own face ended up being the one day nobody's face is different.
