Bali Raja's one day among his people: the oil bath, his puja in five colours or a fort of cow dung, and the aukshan. About 60 minutes.

    1. Rise before sunrise. Light a diya of oil or ghee in the house's mandir.

    2. Carry the sweepings out of the door, striking a thali as you go.
    3. Say the prayer for Bali's kingdom as you set them outside.

    This is the Pathare Prabhu custom of Mumbai: trouble is carried out of the house as Bali's kingdom is called in.

    The oil bath

    1. Warm a little sesame oil and make the utane ready.
    2. The wife seats her husband and applies the oil and the utane; the daughters do the same for their father.
    3. Everyone bathes before sunrise and puts on new clothes.

    Padwa is one of the three and a half muhurtas of the year; the day begins clean and in new clothes.
