Akshaya Tritiya · the katha

The bowl that did not empty

A day that is held to need no muhurat of its own: anything begun or given on it is said not to diminish. So gold is bought, a field is sown, and something is given away.

In the forest the Pandavas had nothing to feed the guests who kept arriving. Surya Dev gave Draupadi a vessel that would not run out until she herself had eaten.

The same day is the one Sudama came to Dwarka with three fistfuls of beaten rice tied in a rag, embarrassed to hand them over, and went home to find his hut had become a house.

Both are the same idea in two directions: what is given on this day goes further than it should. The gold is only the version of it a shop can sell.
