आरम्भ का दोहा

जय गणेश गिरिजा सुवन, मंगल मूल सुजान।
कहत अयोध्यादास तुम, देहु अभय वरदान॥

Jai Ganesh Girija Suvan, Mangal Mul Sujan। Kahat Ayodhya Das Tum, Dehu Abhay Varadan॥

Glory to Ganesh ji, son of Girija, the root of all that is good and the knower of all. Ayodhyadas says: grant us the boon of fearlessness.

चौपाई

१

जय गिरिजा पति दीन दयाला।
सदा करत सन्तन प्रतिपाला॥

Jai Girija Pati Deen Dayala। Sada Karat Santan Pratipala॥

Glory to Shiv ji, husband of Girija, merciful to the lowly, who ever protects the saints.

२

भाल चन्द्रमा सोहत नीके।
कानन कुण्डल नागफनी के॥

Bhaal Chandrama Sohat Neeke। Kanan Kundal Naagphani Ke॥

The crescent Moon shines beautifully on His brow, and earrings of serpent-hoods adorn His ears.

अंग गौर शिर गंग बहाये।
मुण्डमाल तन क्षार लगाए॥

Ang Gaur Shir Ganga Bahaye। Mundmaal Tan Chhaar Lagaye॥

His body is fair, the Ganga flows from His head, He wears a garland of skulls, and His body is smeared with vibhuti.

वस्त्र खाल बाघम्बर सोहे।
छवि को देखि नाग मुनि मोहे॥

Vastra Khaal Baghambar Sohai। Chhavi Ko Dekhi Naag Mun Mohai॥

He is clad in the tiger skin; beholding His form, even the Nagas and the sages are enchanted.

मैना मातु की हवे दुलारी।
बाम अंग सोहत छवि न्यारी॥

Maina Matu Ki Havai Dulari। Baam Ang Sohat Chhavi Nyari॥

The beloved daughter of Mother Maina graces His left side, a beauty beyond compare.

कर त्रिशूल सोहत छवि भारी।
करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी॥

Kar Trishul Sohat Chhavi Bhari। Karat Sada Shatrun Kshaykari॥

The trishul shines in His hand in great splendour, ever destroying His foes.

नन्दि गणेश सोहै तहँ कैसे।
सागर मध्य कमल हैं जैसे॥

Nandi Ganesh Sohain Tahan Kaise। Saagar Madhya Kamal Hain Jaise॥

Nandi and Ganesh ji look as lovely there as lotuses in the midst of the ocean.

कार्तिक श्याम और गणराऊ।
या छवि को कहि जात न काऊ॥

Kartik Shyam Aur Ganaraau। Ya Chhavi Ko Kahi Jaat Na Kaau॥

Kartikeya, dark of hue, and Ganapati: no one can put this sight into words.

देवन जबहीं जाय पुकारा।
तब ही दुख प्रभु आप निवारा॥

Devan Jabahin Jaay Pukara। Tab Hi Dukh Prabhu Aap Nivara॥

Whenever the devas came and called upon You, You took away their sorrow at once, O Prabhu.

किया उपद्रव तारक भारी।
देवन सब मिलि तुमहिं जुहारी॥

Kiya Upadrav Tarak Bhari। Devan Sab Mili Tumahin Juhari॥

When the asura Taraka wrought great havoc, all the devas came together and bowed to You in prayer.

तुरत षडानन आप पठायउ।
लवनिमेष महँ मारि गिरायउ॥

Turat Shadanana Aap Pathayau। Luv Nimesh Mahin Maari Girayau॥

At once You sent six-faced Kartikeya, who struck the asura down in the blink of an eye.

१२

आप जलंधर असुर संहारा।
सुयश तुम्हार विदित संसारा॥

Aap Jalandhar Asur Sanhara। Suyash Tumhar Vidit Sansara॥

You Yourself destroyed the asura Jalandhar, and Your glory is known throughout the world.

त्रिपुरासुर सन युद्ध मचाई।
सबहिं कृपा कर लीन बचाई॥

Tripurasur San Yudh Machayi। Sabhin Kripa Kar Leen Bachayi॥

You gave battle to Tripurasur and, in Your grace, saved all.

किया तपहिं भागीरथ भारी।
पुरब प्रतिज्ञा तासु पुरारी॥

Kiya Tapahin Bhagirath Bhari। Purab Pratigya Tasu Purari॥

When Bhagirath performed severe tapas, You fulfilled his sankalp, O Purari, destroyer of Tripura.

दानिन महँ तुम सम कोउ नाहीं।
सेवक स्तुति करत सदाहीं॥

Danin Mahin Tum Sam Kou Nahin। Sevak Astuti Karat Sadahin॥

Among givers there is none like You; Your sevaks sing Your praise always.

वेद नाम महिमा तव गाई।
अकथ अनादि भेद नहिं पाई॥

Ved Naam Mahima Tav Gaayi। Akath Anadi Bhed Nahin Paayi॥

The Vedas have sung the glory of Your name, yet none has found the secret of You, the Ineffable, the Beginningless.

प्रकटी उदधि मंथन में ज्वाला।
जरत सुरासुर भए विहाला॥

Pragati Udadhi Manthan Mein Jwala। Jarat Surasur Bhaye Vihala॥

When the fire of poison rose from the churning of the ocean, devas and asuras alike burned and were in anguish.

१८

कीन्ही दया तहं करी सहाई।
नीलकण्ठ तब नाम कहाई॥

Keenhi Daya Tahan Kari Sahayi। Neelkanth Tab Naam Kahayi॥

You took pity and came to their aid, drinking the poison; so You came to be called Neelkanth, the Blue-throated.

पूजन रामचंद्र जब कीन्हा।
जीत के लंक विभीषण दीन्हा॥

Pujan Ramchandra Jab Keenha। Jeet Ke Lanka Vibhishan Deenha॥

When Shri Ram offered puja to You, He conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishan.

सहस कमल में हो रहे धारी।
कीन्ह परीक्षा तबहिं त्रिपुरारी॥

Sahas Kamal Mein Ho Rahe Dhari। Keenh Pariksha Tabahin Tripurari॥

As Shri Ram was offering You a thousand lotuses, You put Him to the test, O Tripurari.

२१

एक कमल प्रभु राखेउ जोई।
कमल नयन पूजन चहं सोई॥

Ek Kamal Prabhu Rakheu Joi। Kamal Nayan Pujan Chahan Soi॥

You hid one lotus, O Prabhu, and the lotus-eyed Shri Ram resolved to offer His own eye in its place.

कठिन भक्ति देखी प्रभु शंकर।
भये प्रसन्न दिए इच्छित वर॥

Kathin Bhakti Dekhi Prabhu Shankar। Bhaye Prasanna Diye Ichchhit Var॥

Seeing such steadfast bhakti, O Shankar, You were pleased and granted Him the boon He desired.

जय जय जय अनंत अविनाशी।
करत कृपा सब के घटवासी॥

Jai Jai Jai Anant Avinashi। Karat Kripa Sab Ke Ghat Vasi॥

Glory, glory, glory to You, the Infinite, the Imperishable, who dwell in every heart and show grace to all.

दुष्ट सकल नित मोहि सतावै।
भ्रमत रहे मोहि चैन न आवै॥

Dusht Sakal Nit Mohi Satavain। Bhramat Rahe Mohi Chain Na Aavain॥

The wicked torment me without end; I wander in confusion and find no peace.

२५

त्राहि त्राहि मैं नाथ पुकारो।
यह अवसर मोहि आन उबारो॥

Trahi Trahi Main Nath Pukaro। Yahi Avasar Mohi Aan Ubaro॥

"Save me, save me," I cry to You, O Master; come now and rescue me in this hour.

२६

लै त्रिशूल शत्रुन को मारो।
संकट से मोहि आन उबारो॥

Lai Trishul Shatrun Ko Maro। Sankat Se Mohi Aan Ubaro॥

Take up Your trishul and slay my foes; come and deliver me from this peril.

२७

मातु पिता भ्राता सब कोई।
संकट में पूछत नहिं कोई॥

Matu Pita Bhrata Sab Koi। Sankat Mein Poochat Nahin Koi॥

Mother, father, brothers, everyone: in a time of trouble, no one asks after us.

२८

स्वामी एक है आस तुम्हारी।
आय हरहु अब संकट भारी॥

Swami Ek Hai Aas Tumhari। Aay Harahu Ab Sankat Bhari॥

O Swami, You alone are my hope; come now and take away this heavy trouble.

२९

धन निर्धन को देत सदाहीं।
जो कोई जांचे वो फल पाहीं॥

Dhan Nirdhan Ko Det Sadahin। Jo Koi Jaanche Vo Phal Paahin॥

You ever give wealth to the poor; whoever asks of You receives the fruit.

३०

अस्तुति केहि विधि करौं तुम्हारी।
क्षमहु नाथ अब चूक हमारी॥

Astuti Kehi Vidhi Karaun Tumhari। Kshamahu Nath Ab Chook Hamari॥

How am I to sing Your praise? O Master, forgive us our failings.

३१

शंकर हो संकट के नाशन।
मंगल कारण विघ्न विनाशन॥

Shankar Ho Sankat Ke Nashan। Mangal Karan Vighna Vinashan॥

O Shankar, You destroy all troubles; You are the cause of all good and the remover of obstacles.

३२

योगी यति मुनि ध्यान लगावैं।
नारद शारद शीश नवावैं॥

Yogi Yati Muni Dhyan Lagavain। Narad Sharad Sheesh Navavain॥

Yogis, ascetics and sages hold You in dhyana; Narad and Saraswati Maa bow their heads before You.

३३

नमो नमो जय नमो शिवाय।
सुर ब्रह्मादिक पार न पाय॥

Namo Namo Jai Namah Shivaya। Sur Brahmadik Paar Na Paaya॥

I bow to You again and again; glory to You, Om Namah Shivaya. Even Brahma ji and the devas could not find the end of You.

३४

जो यह पाठ करे मन लाई।
ता पार होत है शम्भु सहाई॥

Jo Yah Paath Kare Man Layi। Ta Par Hot Hai Shambhu Sahayi॥

Whoever recites this path with a whole heart crosses over, for Shambhu is their help.

३५

ॠनिया जो कोई हो अधिकारी।
पाठ करे सो पावन हारी॥

Riniya Jo Koi Ho Adhikari। Paath Kare So Pavan Haari॥

Whoever is burdened with debt and recites this path is freed and made pure.

३६

पुत्र हीन कर इच्छा कोई।
निश्चय शिव प्रसाद तेहि होई॥

Putra Heen Kar Ichchha Koi। Nishchay Shiv Prasad Tehin Hoi॥

Anyone desiring a child will surely be blessed with one by Shiv ji's grace.

३७

पण्डित त्रयोदशी को लावे।
ध्यान पूर्वक होम करावे॥

Pandit Trayodashi Ko Lave। Dhyan Purvak Hom Karave॥

Call a pandit on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, and have a havan done with a mind held on Shiv ji.

३८

त्रयोदशी ब्रत करे हमेशा।
तन नहीं ताके रहे कलेशा॥

Trayodashi Vrat Kare Hamesha। Tan Nahin Take Rahe Kalesha॥

Whoever keeps the Trayodashi vrat always will have no suffering in the body.

३९

धूप दीप नैवेद्य चढ़ावे।
शंकर सम्मुख पाठ सुनावे॥

Dhoop Deep Naivedya Chadhave। Shankar Sammukh Paath Sunave॥

Offer dhoop, a diya and naivedya, and recite this path before Shiv ji.

४०

जन्म जन्म के पाप नसावे।
अन्तवास शिवपुर में पावे॥

Janma Janma Ke Paap Nasave। Anta Vaas Shivpur Mein Pave॥

The sins of many births are destroyed, and in the end one dwells in Shivpur, Shiv ji's own abode.

कहै अयोध्या आस तुम्हारी।
जानि सकल दुःख हरहु हमारी॥

Kahai Ayodhya Aas Tumhari। Jaani Sakal Dukh Harahu Hamari॥

Ayodhyadas says: "You are my hope. Knowing all our sorrows, take them away."

अन्त का दोहा

नित्य नेम कर प्रातः ही, पाठ करौं चालीसा।
तुम मेरी मनोकामना, पूर्ण करो जगदीश॥

Nitya Nem Kar Pratah Hi, Paath Karaun Chalisa। Tum Meri Manokamna, Purna Karo Jagdish॥

Keeping it as a daily rule, I recite this Chalisa every morning. O Jagdish, Master of the world, fulfil the wishes of my heart.

मगसर छठि हेमन्त ॠतु, संवत चौसठ जान।
अस्तुति चालीसा शिवहि, पूर्ण कीन कल्याण॥

Magasar Chhathi Hemant Ritu, Samvat Chausath Jaan। Astuti Chalisa Shivahi, Purna Keen Kalyan॥

On the sixth day of the Margashirsha month during the Hemant season, in the Samvat year 64, this Chalisa in praise of Shiv ji was completed for the welfare of all.

इन दिनों पर
